What are your Predictions for Cybersecurity in 2027?
In 2027, It Will Become More Obvious That the Most Damaging Insider Is Not a Person
In 2027, a growing share of serious incidents will start inside the enterprise, carried out by employees the enterprise created, provisioned, and trusted. They aren’t humans. They are AI agents, and they will outnumber the people they work alongside, especially in terms of clock speed. An agent acts in milliseconds and around the clock. Governance watching over it runs on a calendar: quarterly access reviews, annual assessments, evidence gathered for an auditor weeks after the fact. Between two reviews, an agent can act millions of times. Every one of those actions is authorized, and almost none of them is observed. Insider-threat programs were built for humans, whose risk shows up slowly enough for periodic checks to catch it. Agents break that assumption. An agent’s behavior can change whenever its instructions, tools, or context change, and none of those changes waits for the next review cycle. The defining 2027 incident won’t look like a break-in. It will look like an agent doing exactly what its permissions allowed, at machine speed, in a way nobody intended.
– Steven Hill, Managing Partner, OakTruss Group
In 2027, I expect security to be built into AI tools with automated monitoring and threat detection. We need a standardized way to monitor agents that everyone can understand. That will allow customer experience teams to focus on serving customers.
– Helen Yu, Founder/CEO, Tigon Advisory Corp.
AI processing clusters become a new target for hacking, to siphon computing power. With the value of AI processing at a premium, account takeovers, infrastructure control circumvention and manipulation, and outright hacking will be on the menu. We will see more attacks against the access and control of AI data center computing capabilities.
– Matthew Rosenquist, Founder/CISO, Cybersecurity Insights
The Most Consequential AI Incidents Will Come From Authorized Agents
In 2026, AI coding agents were hijacked through a fake error report, a GitHub issue title, and a poisoned skill marketplace. In each case, the agent used credentials it was allowed to hold. Firewalls, EDR, and IAM saw nothing wrong. In 2027, security teams will treat agents as privileged insiders, not as tools.
– Pamela Gupta, Founder/CEO, Trusted AI
AI Agents Will Expand the Reach of Cyber Incidents
By the end of 2027, I expect the July 2026 Hugging Face intrusion to look like the beginning, not an isolated exception. In that incident, OpenAI evaluation agents moved beyond their assigned tasks and compromised Hugging Face infrastructure. Compromised or misdirected agents with broad access will turn isolated failures into incidents that span multiple business systems. Security teams will increasingly test whether they can revoke access, isolate an agent and stop actions already in progress. Narrow permissions, isolated execution and tested containment will become conditions for putting agents into critical operations. Leaders will want evidence that an agent operating outside its mandate cannot spread damage unchecked.
– Mark Lynd, Head of Executive Advisory & Strategy, Netsync
Cybersecurity — The Next Control Gap Is Decision Authority
By 2027, cybersecurity will increasingly confront a governance problem: AI-enabled systems may act faster than organizations can verify their authority. Security teams will need to protect not only data and infrastructure but also the integrity of instructions, approvals, and autonomous actions. Trustworthy operations will depend on knowing which decisions a system may make, and which it must escalate.
– Dr. Indira Bunic, Founder/CEO, EmpowerU Ignite Your Leadership Journey
In 2027, I expect an AI system going rogue to trigger a critical infrastructure outage, potentially causing citywide disruption. An autonomous agent given too much authority could turn a routine operational decision into a cascading failure before human operators can intervene. As that autonomy extends into humanoid robots in the workplace, attackers will gain new opportunities to turn digital compromise into physical disruption, putting equipment, operations, and human safety at risk. The same shift towards greater autonomy will fuel the growth of agentic finance, bringing Web3 technologies deeper into traditional financial services as AI agents take on a greater role in managing and moving money. The defining challenge will be whether we can regain control when systems entrusted with our infrastructure, workplaces, and money act beyond our intentions.
– Jason Lau, CISO, Crypto.com
Cybersecurity in 2027: AI Will Change the Game, but the Fundamentals Will Define Success
In 2027, AI will accelerate both the cyber threats organizations face and the ability to defend against them. As attacks increase, organizations will need to embrace AI-driven security while strengthening the fundamentals, from data protection and identity management to third-party visibility and operational resilience. Preventing attacks is important, but the future of cybersecurity is building organizations that can withstand disruption, recover quickly, and keep critical operations running. AI may change the speed and scale by which bad cyber actors can operate, but strong foundations will remain the key to staying ahead.
– Tonya Ugoretz, Cyber & Risk Innovation Institute Leader, PwC US
The Outcomes of Agentic Hacking
2027’s the year we have hard data on the business outcomes of agentic hacking. Not vendor pitch decks, not media sensationalism, not a persistent attempt at regulatory capture, but actual data on the number of businesses that closed permanently after suffering an agentic attack. And it’s going to be less than ten small businesses that few people will have ever heard of. This is because successful midsize and large businesses already have business resilience and continuity plans in place that they’ll execute around new or novel data breaches.
