We asked a selection of our Thinkers360 global thought leaders and influencers about their predictions for the digital transformation in 2022. Here’s what they told us…
What are your predictions for digital transformation in 2022?
Shift from exploration to production and scaling
Companies will increasingly focus on shifting digital business transformation initiatives from exploration and experimentation to production and scaling solutions across the organization to realize results. In addition, specific emerging technologies solutions will take center stage, including AI-based systems for data analysis and decision-making, augmented reality solutions for customer engagement, employee training, and front-line service efficiency, as well as blockchain, IoT sensors, and 3D printing for additive manufacturing and supply chain optimization.
– Kamales Lardi, Managing Partner at Lardi & Partner Consulting GmbH
Digital transformation will expand in 2022. That’s obvious. The real question is how will digital transformation evolve? Digital transformation means using customers as the reference point when making investment decisions across the company in areas such as business model, marketing, sales, product design, finance, service, and so on. Information sharing and overcoming silos is essential in this customer-focused equation. In 2022, we will see digital transformation and customer experience come together as a single continuum. Sophisticated organizations will listen carefully to customers and merge digital transformation and customer experience initiatives in response to authentic customer needs. My advice to business leaders: prioritize your processes, operations, and investments based on what customers want at every point in the customer lifecycle.
– Michael Krigsman, Industry Analyst at CXOTalk
The majority of organizations will accelerate use of digital technologies, transforming existing business processes to drive customer engagement, employee productivity and business resiliency. The investment trend in technologies over the 2022 is increasing, and I suppose the priorities will be Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, and Automation. The future seems to reserve incredible potential, but only the ones who embark on the digital transformation journey can succeed.
– Linda Grasso, Chief Executive Officer at DeltalogiX
I believe that 2022 will be the year that edge computing begins to impact enterprise digital initiatives in a serious way. Multiple technology trends contribute to this transformation, including the Internet of Things, the continuing rollout of 5G, and cloud-native computing on the edge. The convergence of these trends will give enterprises entirely new opportunities for transformative business models that will change the way they meet the needs of customers.
– Jason Bloomberg, President at Intellyx
Despite claims to the contrary, the pandemic was not the great instigator of digital transformation. While it did accelerate technology transformation in the form of organizations moving things to the cloud or supporting remote work, I would argue that it was actually an inhibitor to true digital transformation — especially as much of the pandemic-induced technology transformation was internally focused. The good news, however, is that the rapid pace of change over the last year and a half — and the largely positive outcomes as a result — is making it easier for progressive enterprise leaders to take on more ambitious digital transformation efforts in 2022. Most importantly, these more authentic efforts will be customer- and experientially-focused. But I also expect that it will only be a fraction of organizations and leaders that seize this opportunity. Most will let it pass and will suffer the consequences as a result.
– Charles Araujo, Keynote Speaker, Tech Industry Analyst & Author at Charles Araujo International, LLC
Following the prolonged period of turmoil generated by Covid 19, we will experience a refocus on the value creation potential of digital transformation efforts in 2022. Investment will continue but will be more balanced between technology and capabilities to deal with three important tensions. The first is about the employee/employer relationship which will imply a rethink of work and the workplace, beyond how many days people can WFH. The second is about risk/ operations management which will accelerate the level of process automation and supply-chain resilience. The third is about accelerated digital adoption/new habits of global consumers which will need to be captured with new experiences. Corporations that do not deal with these tensions will not capture the value from the expected economic rebound and fall further behind.
– Didier Bonnet, Professor of Strategy and Digital Transformation at IMD Business School
Digital’s role is more critical than ever. Brands capitalize on AI, big data, and 5G to drive their digital transformations. AI revolutionizes how we are doing business and more enterprises will start scaling AI models. I believe executives should do their utmost to connect digital transformation to processes. Companies are embracing new technologies to transform customer experience and operations and they will be increasing AI, cloud, analytics, and big data investments. In order to achieve digital transformation excellence, brands will need foundational technologies to enjoy immediate benefits and set the stage for true transformation. The new trends will be instrumental in top brands’ growth. I suggest brands focus on growing in new markets and evolving customer behaviors. Last but not least, innovative internal processes can accelerate businesses and the use of video conferencing will be growing in 2022.
