Thinkers360: Tell us a bit about your background and areas of expertise
SD: It’s a bit of a mix really of digital, mathematics, socialising and helping people! I lived in Seattle in 1999 and could see the power of the world wide web. I realised Google was based fundamentally based on sheer mathematics so I began to research the science of search engine optimization.
On return to the UK I worked as an advice worker going into probation, job centers, prisons and drug & alcohol rehabilitation centers and giving advice on debts, housing and criminality. I continued my study of the maths of search and after 10,000 hours of research I became an ‘expert by default’.
I gave seminars for many years on Search at business and private events, and was invited to join the Cruise Lecturer’s Association, which I enjoy immensely as I love to travel and meet new people. On one of the voyages in 2014 while stopping in New York City I was invited into the Google offices. Eric Schmidt’s office confirmed I had cracked the Google PageRank algorithm and that is was fundamentally a ‘stochastic matrix’, meaning in simple terms that all in the matrix start on an equal footing, 1. On International Women’s Day 2015 I was invited to speak at a Pink Ladies Networking event to speak about using Twitter for business. The fellow inspirational speaker was Amy Varle who spoke about her own experience of becoming homeless and her journey to help people who are homeless to leave the streets and start a new life.
I was extremely inspired and set out to help Amy. Practically from that day forward we became best friends and business partners. Amy wrote the strategy to end homelessness via the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. I helped her on a digital basis to raise awareness using social media for social good. In 2017 I was invited to a party at Downing Street and I spoke to Theresa May, the Prime Minister at the time, about Amy’s work. The PM rolled out Housing First in the UK.
Amy and I are due to launch The Peoples Hub leading with Global Gatherings to end homelessness with showcased Socially Homes solutions over the coming months.
Thinkers360: What’s the favorite part of your current role?
SD: Seeing the social impact in real life is wonderful. As well as homelessness, The Peoples Hub and our Global Gatherings network work on equality and justice projects, and through the story of Ada Lovelace, with Philpott Design, we created #AdasArmy. A call across the world for equality. In 2018, part of the Ada’s Army collective I co-created an Ada Lovelace WikiEditAThon at The Pankhurst Centre [the home of Emmeline Pankhurst] to improve women’s presence on the platform. I worked in collaboration with Digital Science and hubs worldwide on Ada Lovelace Day 8th-9th October 2018 for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to women and diversity in science, technology, art, business and more. Due to Wikipedia feeding the Google Knowledge Graph this was important to push and facilitate. Ada’s Army touches on all aspects of equality for women and is a global campaign calling for an end to patriarchy as well as the matriarchy! As in Emmeline Pankhurst’s words “We have to free half the human race, the women, to help free the other half.”
Thinkers360: How do you utilize Thinkers360?
SD: Have found it extremely valuable especially for latest industry news and trends emerging in various professional fields. The industry lists are of interest and the platform itself feels more professional as LinkedIn seems to have become very noisy with less substance. A breath of fresh air was needed in the professional social media landscape and Thinkers360 might just be that!
Editor’s Note: See Susan’s Thinkers360 In-Depth Profile & Portfolio.
Thinkers360: How do you like to work with brands who wish to engage you as a thought leader?
SD: Through our Pos Power Media team we empower communities digitally and on the ground. Collaboration, ethics and honesty are the keys so no greenwashing campaigns are accepted! Keen to work with any brand or organisation that truly want to see a more ethical clean planet and create massive social impact. Leading with equality, homelessness and social impact, The People’s Hub Global Gatherings address all issues affecting our communities. It is all about doing the right thing. It’s more about a mindset than a particular industry. Think community power. Be happy to connect through Thinkers360 or via my social media platforms, Twitter or LinkedIn, or book a call now for some Clarity.
Thinkers360: What’s your main advice for upcoming thought leaders?
SD: Keep learning, networking and contributing. Create your own opportunities, work with like-minded people, get and give support. If your idea is ethical and makes real social impact please do get in touch.
