Thinkers360: Tell us a bit about your background and areas of expertise
JH: I grew up in rural Scotland in a home that was always full of books. From a very early age, I was immersed in books and lost myself in the wonderful tales that they told – this love of reading is still with me and I find that the best escape is to get lost in a well-written book. My love of books links to my passion for education and learning which are a key part of my background and career. After graduating with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees I spent 20 years working in global organisations in various Organisational Development and Consultancy roles. I also studied part-time for a Ph.D. which focused on investigating the impact of change on levels of stress among middle managers. It was a Ph.D. which was written on trains, planes, and in hotel rooms as I travelled the world in my role for the British Council. Eventually, after working for companies such as PwC as a Management Consultant, I decided that it was time for me to get out of the corporate world and focus purely on what I was passionate about – education and learning. So, for the last 18 years I have been teaching, researching, writing, and carrying out consultancy in the field of organisational change which is such a privilege to be able to do, as I learn new things every day through the work I do.
Thinkers360: What are your current responsibilities and what’s a typical day look like?
JH: My day usually starts at about 6:00 am with something energetic such as a run, swim, or workout in the gym. Keeping fit not only is good for me physically but also mentally. If I am working at home I will head up to my study or alternatively walk 40 minutes to my office at the Business School. I am responsible for teaching several modules for MBA students including Management Consulting and also one on Leadership.
I also deliver a Consulting module for MSc students which has grown in popularity over the last four years – when I took it over there were 50 students, and this year over 200 students signed up for the class.
If I am working on a book (just started my 9th book on Organisational Change) I will spend the evening doing research and writing. Currently, I am working on a global research/consultancy project on change management frameworks which is proving to be fascinating as the aim is to develop a strategic global framework that can be adapted at a local level for the company I am working with.
Thinkers360: What’s the favorite part of your current role?
JH: Definitely teaching students and delivering executive education workshops for companies – it is an amazing privilege to share knowledge and insights and I also love learning from students. I am currently developing a number of executive education workshops on leading and managing change for companies which is fascinating, particularly with the changes in organisational transformations which businesses are facing and grappling with.
Thinkers360: How do you utilize Thinkers360?
JH: Thinkers360 is a fantastic resource with a growing network of incredible thought leaders. It helps me to extend my network and also to learn and share with others across the globe. The recognition I have received from Thinkers360 – which I am very grateful for – has helped to raise my profile and strengthen my credibility and reputation for contributing to, and by sharing knowledge and experience about change in organisations in relevant and meaningful ways.
Editor’s Note: See Julie’s Thinkers360 In-Depth Profile & Portfolio.
Thinkers360: How do you like to work with brands who wish to engage you as a thought leader?
JH: I like to work with companies in many different ways – from running short masterclasses to working in partnership with them on longer-term consultancy projects.
Thinkers360: What’s your main advice for upcoming thought leaders?
JH: Clearly articulate the rationale for any transformation. Engage your stakeholders with change, whenever feasible to do so. Co-create change rather than imposing it. Ensure communications are clear and frequent about organizational transformations. Embrace uncertainty. Lead by example and with people.
