Thinkers360: Tell us a bit about your background and areas of expertise
JC: My background is in procurement. While I have done all types of procurement over the course of my career, my specialty is indirect procurement. Since everyone needs infrastructure procurement, I have been able to do this for a variety of industries including banking, heavy equipment rental, pharmaceutical, technology consulting, telecommunications, and welding & medical equipment.
In almost all of those positions, I also had some form of supplier diversity responsibility as an advocate through the launch and operations for the organization.
Thinkers360: What are your current responsibilities and what’s a typical day look like?
JC: Today I am the President of The Richwell Group, a consultancy firm in supply chain, procurement, and supplier diversity. If I am not traveling for business, a typical day includes several Zoom meetings, perhaps a webinar or client workshop, writing for publications, contracts, statements of work, RFx, and other client work. Travel days consist of site visits, speaking engagements, and conferences.
Thinkers360: What’s the favorite part of your current role?
JC: My favorite part of my current role is that I get to work with a wide range of companies from Fortune 500 to small and diverse-owned businesses. Supply chain and diversity have received a lot of attention in the past couple of years and a company that was not thinking of making much of an investment in either one is now placing them at the top of the priority list. That allows for meaningful change to take place.
I also love that I deal with a lot of different industries across a global footprint. Every day has something new that energizes me.
Thinkers360: How do you see supply chain and supplier diversity continuing to make headway as interest wanes and moves to the next thing?
JC: I think the next place you will see both areas is in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). With the reporting requirements in places like the EU coming over the next few years and the interest from the investment community, this is not going away. One of the first things we learned with ESG is that if a company is going to move the needle on any aspect of it, the supply chain must be a prominent part of the solution. Supplier diversity is the supply chain piece of DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) and will need to be part of the S in ESG to be successful.
The benefits of this are that reporting and metrics will get better and better defined. That is going to be excellent for understanding where a company truly is in its diversity journey.
Thinkers360: How do you like to work with brands who wish to engage you as a thought leader?
JC: I’ve purchased enough similar services to know that flexibility is the key. I want companies to work with me in the way that is easiest for them. Initial inquiries are either by e-mail or by phone. From there we strive to accommodate a client’s preference.

Thinkers360: What’s your main advice for upcoming thought leaders?
JC: It’s a great time to be developing thought leadership. There are so many ways to get in front of potential clients and build a personal or company brand. Stay curious and don’t settle. Find something that makes you excited to wake up and get to work each day and then soar. Be the change you want to see.
