Thinkers360: Tell us a bit about your background and areas of expertise
MCR: My career has been quite strange. I left University with Honours in Sociology and used that to get into market research. I worked on big research projects in both Government and private organisations. It made a lot of sense to me that when organisations where spending lots of money they needed to do the research first, so they were making the right decisions. I then ended up starting a video production house with my husband and running it. It was there that I learnt the importance of building trust in remote teams, as our workforce was in regional locations. We also produced a lot of corporate training videos and I was adamant about using evidence-based techniques to improve learning. That was pretty revolutionary back then. But the turning point for me was working for large organisations and seeing how they were treating staff. I was shocked that leaders didn’t know how to build trust with their people, so I decided to start a company to help them do just that! Again, I use a lot of evidence-based techniques and I still do a lot of research in companies. For my latest book, Trusted to Thrive: How leaders create connected and accountable teams, I did a lot of research to really ensure that I offered leaders the right tips to improve their results. Years ago, I couldn’t see how my research analytical skills helped my clients. But as Steve Jobs said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” My strange career makes sense when I look at it backwards, but it didn’t earlier on.
Thinkers360: What are your current responsibilities and what’s a typical day look like?
MCR: As a speaker, coach and facilitator, my role is very varied. I like to separate my main tasks by day, so Monday is my writing day, Tuesday to Thursday are my client delivery days and Fridays are business development. I also work closely with my team to help me get everything done.
Thinkers360: What’s the favorite part of your current role?
MCR: So much – I love working with my clients and helping them look at things differently and solve people problems. Speaking is a huge love, as well as coaching and mentoring people to be the best leader they can be. I also love writing.
Thinkers360: How do you like to work with brands who wish to engage you as a thought leader?
MCR: I have a variety of programs to help organisations. Starting with the executive team, I love to use my SUCCEED Together® online assessment to help find out what’s really going on with the team, so I can more effectively determine the right tools and techniques. My research experience has taught me that you can’t guess what’s going on in a team. Even what team members (or the CEO) say about their team interactions is often flawed. I like to do executive team workshops to help top teams really understand what’s going on and what they need to do to improve their interactions. This has enormous impact on the organisation. Companies can even take that further and get me to both coach leaders or train them in how to build trust with those around them. I have a couple of programs to help such as my Trusted Teams Leadership Development program and my Trusted Leader Program. I have also got a leadership mastermind group called the Tribe of Trusted Leaders. That’s great for individuals who want to accelerate their leadership and learn in a community of like-minded individuals.
Thinkers360: How do you utilize Thinkers360?
MCR: I use it to list all the work that I’ve done and help spread the word of how I can help organisations.

Thinkers360: What’s your main advice for upcoming thought leaders?
MCR: Keep writing, reading, learning and letting the world know what you do. It’s a hard slog, but the more you can think independently and develop your ideas, the more people will value your approach.
