John is a globally recognized leadership educator, certified Master Corporate Executive Coach, and author of 15 books that have been translated into ten languages. His thought leadership is reflected in his writing and his choice of media: columns, videos, and books. Even today, John continues to experiment. For example, he integrates piano improvisations into his keynotes, illustrating his still life photos. John is also the host of LinkedIn Live’s Grace under pressure interview series. This platform has enabled him to interview more than a hundred global business, academic, and thought leaders and doers.
John’s books include Grace Notes: Leading in an Upside-Down World, GRACE: A Leader’s Guide to a Better Us, MOXIE: The Secret to Bold and Gutsy Leadership, Lead with Purpose, Lead Your Boss, and The Leader’s Pocket Guide.
In 2022, the International Federation of Learning and Development named John a World-Class Mentor, and in 2021 named him to its Hall of Fame. Also, in 2022, Global Gurus ranked John a Top 20 global leadership expert, a list he has been on since 2007. In 2018 Inc.com named John a Top 100 speaker, and Trust Across America honored John with its Lifetime Achievement Award for Trust. In 2014 Inc.com listed John as a Top 50 leadership expert.
John established a career as a highly sought-after executive coach. He has worked with senior leaders in virtually every industry, from pharmaceutical to real estate, packaged goods to automobiles, and finance to health care. In 2019 John became a member of the renowned Marshall Goldsmith 100 coaches, a group of executive coaches and thought leaders from business, academia, and social service.
John has authored more than 800 leadership columns for various online publications, including Forbes, Harvard Business Review, and Inc.com. Thinkers360: What are your current responsibilities, and what’s a typical day look like?
JB: I structure my days to be generative. That is, I always seek to learn and share with others. Some days are filled with coaching appointments – these days, all virtual. Other times I am speaking or teaching, both online and in-person. And when time permits I write. That’s the professional part. I exercise daily and make time to practice piano, my amusement. My other hobby is golf. Both piano and golf teach me humility because I am always learning, but I keep playing.
Thinkers360: What’s the favorite part of your current role?
JB: My role is to help women and men lead with purpose and grace. Toward that end, I have the privilege of coaching those who want to become better leaders. I share my teachings through keynotes, workshops, and online courses. And I write books – 15 and counting. I also write for Forbes.com and SmartBrief.com.
Thinkers360: How do you utilize Thinkers360?
JB: Thinkers 360 is a beautiful resource in two ways. One, I can learn from other thought leaders. Two, I can share my work with the wider community of individuals who are interested in creating a better workplace for themselves, their colleagues and their communities.
Thinkers360: How do you like to work with brands that wish to engage you as a thought leader?
JB: Before I work with a new client, I learn everything I can about them. In this way, I can focus my coaching on addressing the needs of the individuals in that culture. Same goes for my presentations. I want to know the issues they are facing so I can create a presentation that meets their needs.

Thinkers360: What’s your main advice for upcoming thought leaders?
JB: Know your stuff and stick to your lane. Determine your area of interest and pursue it vigorously. Develop expertise that you can share with others. If you are in marketing, focus on marketing. If you are in coaching, focus on coaching. Develop your purpose statement and pursue it. And if possible, find a mentor or two. Commit to learning and putting what you have learned to good use.
