Thinkers360: Tell us a bit about your background and areas of expertise
JC: My background is corporate sourcing, procurement and supplier diversity. I specialized on indirect categories and that allowed me to move between various industries. I have held leadership positions in banking, telecommunications, pharmaceutical, welding and medical, and heavy equipment rental. My superpower was getting into hard to access areas such as marketing, legal, HR, IT, etc. It gave me a broad category knowledge that was in demand.
I have a BS in Management and tend to take certificate programs in topics that interest me. If I had been born rich, I’d have been a serial student. Right now I’m completing a study through Harvard Business School online in Sustainable Business Strategy.
In 2020 I published my first book Backstage Pass: Pulling the Curtain Back on the Business of Supplier Diversity. It speaks to the mechanics to treat supplier diversity the same as other critical business strategies and how that contributes to a company’s bottom line and brand identity. I contribute articles to various publications on procurement, supplier diversity and leadership topics.
I sit on the Board of Trustees of the National Small Business Association (NSBA) and am on the advisory board of ProcureCon and Diversity Professional. I am also the lead consultant for the WBE Canada (certifying body for woman-owned businesses in Canada) Accelerator program for their corporate members.
Thinkers360: What are your current responsibilities and what’s a typical day look like?
JC: In 2017 I left the corporate world and founded The Richwell Group, a consultancy in sourcing, procurement and supplier diversity. I work with Fortune 500 to small and diverse-owned businesses. On the small business side, I specialize in companies in a growth mode that need to make infrastructure changes to support the larger business. My typical day is a mix of those clients. I also conduct workshops and do keynote speaking so my days include a mix of those commitments as well.
Thinkers360: What’s the favorite part of your current role?
JC: I love being able to move between different industries, company size, countries, and challenges. For example, yesterday I started my day working with a small U.S. company experiencing high growth, then met with a client in the UK who is outsourcing their payables processing. After lunch I worked on an upcoming workshop I am doing for a Canadian client, then closed out the day back in the U.S. with company who is just starting their supplier diversity strategy.
Thinkers360: How do you utilize Thinkers360?
JC: I am a firm believer in the power of the network. Thinkers360 allows me to continue to build that network even though I am now a small company myself. When you work for a large company you are afforded the opportunity to meet the best thinkers in the business. It becomes more difficult to track the thought leaders when you are running your own smaller organization. I look to Thinkers360 to provide those opportunities. Between the lists, articles and profiles, I still have that network to tap.
Editor’s Note: See Jamie’s Thinkers360 In-Depth Profile & Portfolio.
Thinkers360: How do you like to work with brands who wish to engage you as a thought leader?
JC: We prefer a collaboration that adapts to the style of the client. We find that it makes the experience easier and more productive. The indirect background also gives us familiarity with a lot of different industries so we speak different industry languages. Whether presenting a proposal or a workshop, we use examples and analogies based upon the client’s industry. If we are working with an insurance firm, examples based on an oil and gas company doesn’t resonate as well.
Thinkers360: What’s your main advice for upcoming thought leaders?
JC: Stay curious. Designate time to pursue topics, companies, and concepts that are not about your core areas of expertise. Travel and read; nothing creates and promotes a thought leader like a well-rounded perspective.
