Guiding Business Strategy to New Heights With AI and Analytics
Thinkers360
September 05, 2024

Space is awesome. In the sense that it can be scary, but it's incredible what people have achieved with science and technology. Today I'd like to explore a few ways AI is being applied in space and what we can learn for earth-based business strategy.

Autonomous Navigation and Rover Exploration: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science. AI plays a tremendous role in the autonomous navigation of space rovers, such as NASA's Perseverance on Mars. With AI, rovers can independently navigate the Martian terrain, skillfully avoiding obstacles and selecting the most efficient paths for exploration. This autonomy enables faster and more effective missions, reducing the need for direct human oversight.

Satellites: https://www.esa.int/Enabling_Support/Preparing_for_the_Future/Discovery_and_Preparation/Artificial_intelligence_in_space. AI is being increasingly applied in satellite navigation, for both space and Earth weather forecasting while aiding in the detection of unauthorized drones in restricted airspace. Beyond this, AI-powered navigation boosts the capabilities of autonomous vehicles, including cars and boats. A project led by the European Space Agency (ESA) even leveraged AI to create autonomous situational awareness for ships, allowing them to accurately sense and respond to their surroundings.

Planning Space Missions: https://www.boozallen.com/markets/space/artificial-intelligence-for-space-missions.html. AI is helping plan space missions where 20,000 objects orbit. With the anticipated surge in commercial satellite launches, this traffic could potentially triple in just a few years. This increasing congestion in space highlights the immense challenges operators face in managing and safeguarding satellites amid such complexity. Avoiding all of that is a tremendous task, then all of the logistics and supply chain work that also goes into missions.

Just as AI helps space rovers navigate challenging terrains and manage the growing complexity of satellite traffic, these technologies can also enhance Earth-based business operations. AI can automate logistics, optimize supply chains, and improve the capabilities of autonomous vehicles. By utilizing AI to manage complexity and make real-time decisions, businesses can achieve greater efficiency and scalability.

Interesting AI and Analytics Applications Affecting Business Strategy
Thinkers360
September 04, 2024

I was reading an article this morning about how ChatGPT is designing pizza recipes. Apparently AI designed a pizza that represented the country's multicultural demographic, mixing staples from across the globe to meet the population's tastes. It got me thinking about interesting AI uses.

First off, this article about the AI-generated pizza recipe: https://www.techradar.com/computing/artificial-intelligence/would-you-eat-a-pizza-designed-by-chatgpt-pizza-chains-ai-recipe-proves-to-be-a-huge-hit

AI in Archeology where AI is used to analyze ancient scripts and artifacts to uncover historical data, translate forgotten languages, and assist in reconstructing lost sites or civilizations. https://autogpt.net/the-role-of-ai-in-modern-archaeology/ I found it very intersting how one of the most impactful uses here is preservation of the sites while allowing for analyis.

AI in Space Exploration. AI is helping NASA explore Mars and beyond by using autonomous rovers and systems capable of making decisions and performing experiments without human input. Great article from NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab here: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science

AI in Ocean Cleanup. AI systems analyze satellite imagery and marine data to locate oceanic plastic waste and help guide robotic systems to clean up the environment more efficiently. https://theoceancleanup.com/research/#latest-scientific-publications

AI is revolutionizing diverse fields, from generating creative culinary innovations like unique pizza recipes to aiding in the preservation of historical sites by analyzing ancient artifacts without causing damage. In space exploration, AI enables autonomous decision-making in rovers, allowing for more efficient exploration of Mars, while in environmental efforts, AI helps locate and guide ocean cleanup by identifying plastic waste through satellite data. These applications showcase the versatility of AI in solving complex challenges across industries.

This is just the proverbial tip of the iceburg when it comes to interesting applications of AI and analytics, hopefully this gets you inspired!

AI is shaking up the way we approach leadership and business strategy. As a leader, I've seen firsthand how AI is changing the game, helping us make smarter decisions and craft innovative strategies that actually work. Business strategy and leadership are changing because of AI.

Let's take a look at 5 relevant examples and case studies:

  • AI in Decision-Making: Amazon’s use of AI-driven demand forecasting to optimize inventory management and reduce costs.

  • Personalization with AI: Netflix's AI-based recommendation engine changed personalized content and user experience.

  • AI in Customer Experience: Starbucks’ use of AI in its loyalty program and mobile app.

  • Ethical AI Leadership: Microsoft’s commitment to AI ethics and responsible AI development, ensuring trust and transparency in its products.

  • AI in Talent Acquisition and Retention: Hilton’s use of AI in recruitment, improving candidate matching and reducing hiring time.

What can we learn from these examples? That AI is changing business strategy and leadership approaches. How do you introduce a human touch with the scale of AI? By integrating business strategy and leadership approaches that involve AI, testing and experimenting, then continuing to be agile.

I've been working on a book. This book includes 50 industry expert interviews across AI, Analytics, Business Strategy, and Data Science. The plethora of conversations included entrepreneur CEOs, technical specialists, and those hiring in these burgeoning fields. A common thread I heard across chats was how AI is amplifying, not replacing, to our abilities.

The response is clear: Being human is more relevant than ever. Here are 5 thought starters for you and your team when addressing AI, Analytics, and Business Strategy and emphazing a human touch.

  • Balance Technology and Empathy: Explore how businesses can combine AI and analytics with a human-centered approach to create strategies that prioritize customer needs and emotional connections.
  • Personalize with Purpose: Discuss how AI-driven analytics can be used to understand individual customer preferences, enabling more meaningful and personalized interactions.
  • Consider Ethical AI in Business Strategy: Highlight the importance of ethical considerations in using AI and analytics, ensuring that data-driven decisions respect privacy and promote fairness.

  • Build Trust with Transparent AI Practices: Emphasize the need for transparency in AI and analytics, fostering trust between businesses and their customers by clearly communicating how technology is being used.

For a time Analytics reigned king in the hype cycle, and Advanced Analytics, and Data Science, and Machine Learning, then AI, and Generative AI. One thing still holds true, the future of Business Strategy is to integrate the best tools.

The aim here is to provide some thought starters and thought leadership for modern business strategy that integrates AI, Analytics, and whatever is yet to come. Some important aspects to consider:

  • Ethics, privacy, and regulations will remain a top concern, and will guide adoption of these emerging technologies
  • Staying competitive in Business Strategy and Analytics requires adaptation, including utilizing the latest tools
  • Market trends shift and sway, knowing where the market is at and how to strategically position oneself, a company, and Analytics tools will always be helpful
