Samiran Ghosh

Co-Founder at unblox Solutions

Mumbai, India

I am currently working with a Senior Advisor with several startups in fintech, artificial intelligence, and blockchain. During the last two years with these startups, I have helped build and launch an augmented analytics platform with Rockmetric, a credit risk platform for Rubix Data Sciences, and a patented blockchain ecosystem for Archethic.

In 26 years, I have held leadership roles at McKinsey, Microsoft, IBM, Dun & Bradstreet, IBM, and TCS. As Chief Digital Advisor at Microsoft, I helped launch platforms like the Connected Vehicle, Digital Agriculture, and Smart Cities. Before that, during my 14 years at IBM, I did multiple roles across Consulting, Sales, Project Delivery, Research, and Product Development.

I took a one-year sabbatical from IBM to work for Aadhaar, the world’s most extensive digital identity program. Here I helped develop the Application Authentication Framework, which allows key stakeholders could engage with each other in the UIDAI ecosystem.

I am a regular contributor to leading journals, a keynote speaker at industry forums, the AI & Ethics Journal editorial board, and a TEDx Speaker. Have co-authored books on AI and Blockchain, which Wiley published and was featured in the 20 Best New Fintech Books to Read in 2020 by BookAuthority. I am an MIT Technology Review Global Panel member, a Council Member and Contributor for the Forbes Technology Council, and a digital member of the World Economic Forum.

In 2021, I became a board member at IAC, a global expert and pioneer in Hyperautomation. I was also nominated as a Senior Research Fellow at the Digital Euro Association. I just co-founded my blockchain web3 startup - unblox solutions, and co-hosting a funtech podcast - 3 Techies Banter.

On my own time, I work with animal welfare organizations and am the proud parent of Toffee, a golden labrador retriever.

SaaS could soon mean Supercomputing-as-a-Service

A supercomputer pinpointed and eased congestion in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Eagle (the supercomputer) operated by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) used machine learning to trawl through tons of traffic data from satellites, traffic cameras, weather stations, patterns, etc. For example, Eagle found that traffic lights on a road leading into Chattanooga were causing delays, leading to congestion. Switching traffic timings resulted in a 16% decrease in fuel use. In addition, Eagle itself reuses 97% of the wasted heat in other facilities in the complex, making it very environmentally conscious.

LinkedIn
June 28, 2021
If you're my age, you will remember the critical premise of the 1992 classic "Sneakers", starring Robert Redford and Ben Kingsley - a top-secret black box that can break the encryption of any computer system. Quantum computing is that "black box." In the next 2-7 years, quantum computers could change the face of cybersecurity. Once they can factor products of large prime numbers (the basis of current cryptography) (expected between 2024 and 2030) – existing cyber-defense mechanisms will be rendered obsolete. We need to plan for encryption in the quantum future.

The Holy Trinity of Transformation — Culture, Sustainability and Leadership

April 15, 2021
Digital Transformation is not a magic wand; it is a complex yet essential enterprise commitment to change. Companies that have succeeded have reaped significant benefits. The Deloitte Digital Transformation Survey 2020 found that greater digital maturity is associated with better financial performance. The higher-maturity companies in this year’s sample were about 3X more likely than lower-maturity companies to report annual net revenue growth and net profit margins — a pattern that was consistent across industries.

In AI (Can) We Trust?
Forbes Technology Council
February 09, 2021
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the best thing to happen to our lives. It helps us read our emails, complete our sentences, get directions, do online shopping, get dining and entertainment recommendations, and even make it easier to connect with old friends or make new ones on social media. AI is not only skilling itself at many human jobs; it is also making decisions for us.

The question is whether these decisions can be trusted. To elaborate, does AI-aided recruitment facilitate or reject the right candidate selection? Is the Tinder match made in heaven or by the algorithm? Who is being sent to jail — criminals or innocents predicted by AI bias?

Management Lessons from the world of spies

September 11, 2019
I claim no originality for this - all credit goes to Stefan Thomke, the William Barclay Harding Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School whose work I am reproducing verbatim. Others like Business Insider have also referenced this in their articles. Bank Account Portability - Part 2
LinkedIn
December 09, 2016
Bank account number portability will improve competition among banks for acquiring customers and hence increase the acquisition and service cost. Bank account number portability can drive customers of the banks with insufficient service and marketing to comparatively stronger banks. Weaker and smaller banks would have to emphasis on consumer segmentation and for retaining their client base. Banks would be required to provide for higher preliminary investment and service costs for setting up bank account number portability IT infrastructure. Banks would also be required to train their staff to understand and employ the changed processes.

Beyond the Great (Fire) Wall of China
CIO Review
December 15, 2015
The Golden Shield Project, or the GFW (Greater China Firewall) was put in place to regulate internet traffic and it blocks upwards of 90 percent, which translates into more than 2500 sites including the likes of Facebook and Twitter. Loading a non-China hosted web site takes 10-15 seconds more than if it would have been hosted in-country. It is very common for end-users in China to see a 30-second Web page load time for a page that loads in 3 seconds in the UK or Paris. This renders the website or web application unusable. Methods employed by GFW to manage content include DNS blocking, Connection phasing, URL keyword blocking and page content scanning.

The 100 Most Influential People In AI
AI Newsletter
January 21, 2021
Those who know artificial intelligence (AI) only from science fiction were probably surprised by this Guardian op-ed written by the AI GPT-3.

“Artificial intelligence will not destroy humans,” it says. “Believe me.”

Whether or not you find this reassuring, AI is now integrated into our daily lives. For example, Siri, Amazon, and Facebook rely on narrow (or weak) AI, focused on specific tasks.

General (or strong) AI can do much more, and AI experts now predict that a general AI rivaling or exceeding human intelligence is on its way. Even if we never reach this ‘singularity,’ AI will change how we do business, learn, drive, and even create.

To help you keep up with these developments, we’ve compiled a diverse list of researchers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and journalists who bring unique perspectives on AI.

TEDx Talk by Samiran Ghosh - Is Eternal Life Possible
YouTube
September 04, 2020
I revisited my TEDx Talk very recently and realized how relevant it was to the new world in transition. All of us seem to be redefining our lives and I thought - why not add some sub-titles and upload a Ver 2.0 of this talk. We all seem to be a new version of ourselves (or at least trying to figure out one).

A big challenge with these talks is not being able to choose one's subject but work with the one provided  -  and an abstract one at that. Further, working with Microsoft at that point in time also had its challenges  -  adopting any position on the future of technology would be grounds for disqualification.

At the same time, the expectation was that there would be some unique and thought-provoking insights leveraging my experience. I chose to interpret 'Coming Back to Life' in as many ways as I could  - eternal life,  another life, a second life, a better life, the life you always wanted to live. But to be able to speak with conviction, I had to speak on something close to my heart." That's how my favorite comic characters, movies, and my golden labrador, Toffee found their way into the talk - along with their unique philosophies!

Accelerating towards a more inclusive society with AI and Blockchain
World Economic Forum
July 03, 2020
The Fourth Industrial Revolution , normally characterized by the utilization of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, 3D printing, blockchain , Internet of Things, 5G among others — has ushered in a new era of economic disruption with uncertain socio-economic consequences, especially for the Global South.

Samiran Ghosh has worked at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain, especially in the context of the global south. As the Chief Digital Advisor at Microsoft, he worked on platforms like the Connected Vehicle, Digital Agriculture and Smart Cities. These initiatives all had undercurrents of massive societal impact. Most recently, at Aadhaar, he helped develop the Application Authentication Framework which allows key stakeholders to engage with each other in the UIDAI ecosystem. He is a regular contributor in leading journals, and a guest lecturer in various Indian universities.

Given his expertise, I interviewed him to find out a bit more about the role technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain can play to enhance and leapfrog communities, as well as the societal issues they can create.

The Good, The Bad and the Fun We Had (in Season 2)
Bingepods
October 31, 2022
3 Techies Banter operates at the top of the Maslow Hierarchy. Why do we claim that? Well. Who else laughs at their own jokes without a care in the world. And believe us when we say tech jokes are tough to come by .

We are very high on self-esteem and love our show. Stands to reason, really. If we don't like our podcast, how can we expect others to?

We have had loads of fun making this season . And since listenership has grown, we can hazard a guess that you have too. Write in your suggestion for an even more fun-filled Season 3 at 3TB@unblox.com.

And now for the season finale paradox. Consider a situation where Pinocchio says, "My nose grows now". What happens next?

The nose grows. That means he's speaking the truth, so his nose shouldn't grow. But,  his nose grows only when he lies.
The nose doesn't grow. That means he's lying, and his nose should grow, but it doesn't.

That should keep you guys intrigued till we are back. SOON.

Our Intelligent Ancestors and the "Not So' Intelligent us
Bingepods
October 03, 2022
A lot of people question if one person wrote the Mahabharata. Maybe, Maybe Not. But the critical question is whether something so complex can ever be written in the modern era irrespective of the number of people used. For those amazed by the Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, remember that the Mahabharata is roughly 7X the length of the Iliad and Odyssey combined and 15X the length of the Christian Bible.

Amish conducted a pop quiz, asking us the number of Indian manuscripts in existence. We failed miserably. And the number is astounding, especially when we compare it with other ancient civilisations and realise that 95% of these manuscripts are waiting to be deciphered.

Imagine the wealth of knowledge just waiting to be rediscovered. That could be the tech project of the century. Any takers?

ABBA, 9 Evenings and the Cuckoo Clock
Bingepods
September 15, 2022
The oldest written melody is the Hurrian Hymn Number 6, from around 1400 BC. Closer home, Indian classical music is one of the oldest unbroken musical traditions in the world. Its origin can be traced to recitations of Vedic scriptures, i.e. 6000 years ago.

Similarly, the history of art extends from prehistoric cave paintings thru Byzantine, Baroque, Impressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism to modern Pop art and Minimalism. The Indus Valley probably marks the recorded start of Indian Art. That is quite a mouthful .

Enter Tech. Quite simply, tech allows AUM to all - access, understand and monetise opportunities. And this is the driving engine of the much-talked-about creator economy. Hence the need for the episode - the mystery of its name is in the episode.

And so is an exciting contest with some fun giveaways for our loyal listeners . Those interested, please follow the instructions and write to us at 3TB@unblox.com.

Modern OTT - a land grab in Zombieland
Bingepods
August 23, 2022
Did you know that the average human attention span is just 8.25 seconds? (Shorter than a goldfish). That is a 25% drop between 2000 and 2015. We are a hyper-distracted lot.

At the office, we check our email inbox 11 times an hour.
We pick up our phone more than 1,500 times weekly, once every 5.5 mins.
The average time we watch an internet video is 2.7 minutes.
But OTT consumption is spiralling; we consume 38 hours of content every month (equal to a work week). The market is booming; the platforms are losing money - all 10,000.

The reason for this is consumer nirvana. Too much choice, too much control and no lock-in, to name just a few. Did you get your daily recommendation of the "not to miss shows" on an OTT platform? Did you watch it or get overwhelmed by all the recommendations and spend that hour you had kept for watching just surfing on all the platforms? Well, the sticky bum syndrome of cinema does not hold you in place for OTT

In this episode, we chat with Keertan Adyanthaya, ex-Disney, ex-Fox, ex-Star, ex-MTV, and X-Man (just kidding ) to get to the bottom of all this.

India@75: A Tryst with Technology
Bingepods
August 15, 2022
India is home to 105 unicorns with a total valuation of $ 338.50 B; 19 of these were added to date in 2022. In contrast, France created one unicorn in the last 2 years. Despite this euphoria, we do not fully understand or appreciate the far-reaching impact of the tech industry on India's development march.

Apart from being a $200B industry ($178B exports), tech changed the fabric of the nation:

Diversity and inclusion - 5M direct employees, 1.8M of whom are women
Transparency - first to adopt GAAP reporting; setting corporate governance standards
Inclusive Growth - beyond 11 metros to tier 2, 3 and 4 towns
Public Digital Infrastructure - Aadhaar, UPI, Co-Win, ONDC, Passport Seva, GST

Harish Mehta, one of the band of mavericks who built this industry, joins us in this episode to give us some fantastic insights. Do write in with your feedback to 3TB@unblox.com.

14 Smart Ways To Keep Your Dev And Sales Teams On The Same Page
Forbes
September 01, 2020
In a tech company, the people selling your product usually aren’t the same ones who developed it. Your sales numbers and customer retention can significantly decline if the members of your sales team don’t fully understand your product’s capabilities and functionality. They may under-promote it, leaving out key details that could close the deal, or make unrealistic promises about the product, leaving new customers disappointed and more likely to move on.

As a tech leader, you need to do your part to keep your company’s IT and sales teams on the same page. Here’s how the members of Forbes Technology Council recommend encouraging greater collaboration between these two departments.

WHY AI CONTINUES TO FAIL AT VALUE-LADEN DECISION MAKING
Boundless Podcast
July 15, 2020
“With AI on a global scale, certain developing nations could leverage the ‘leapfrog effect’. This can occur when a late technological entrant has the two distinct advantages of learning from first movers and of not living with legacy.” Samiran Ghosh

️ This is a conversation with Samiran Ghosh. Samiran has held leadership roles with IBM, Microsoft and McKinsey and he’s worked on the world's largest digital identity program. Samiran has authored chapters on blockchain and AI in books published by Wiley and is a TEDx speaker and Forbes Tech Council member.

In this episode, Samiran talks about:
1.) why embedding ethics and morality in machines is so difficult despite having a thousand years of common law
2.) whether it’s fair that we hold AI decision making to higher standards than human decision making
3.) how difficult it is to ever say whether technology is doing good or bad.

Cryptocurrency
Uniris
December 09, 2019
What if technology could finally simplify your daily life without jeopardizing your security? What if you were told that you already have this technology? Uniris promise is to provide access to all technologies with a simple touch of your finger while protecting your identity. The Uniris team has developed an ultra-secure and tamper-proof technology that is as secure as a chip of a Bank card. It allows you to replace any password, key or other authentication device by simply reading inside your fingers.

To operate on a global human scale without control or intervention of any person, company or state, this "open source" technology is based on a new generation network called "Blockchain". To achieve the scale and adoption we improved the blockchain technology so that it can replace any application or service: open your car or home door, identify yourself or pay online without risk to your data or goods, always have your medical record accessible yet protected ... This technology just works from the very first use regardless of where you are.

To function and reward people who host a network server (miner), a Blockchain is built around a cryptocurrency (UCO in the case of Uniris). This currency is created at the start of the project to finance all developments thus making each investor, a real participant in the construction of this New World from the very first moment of inception.

A Truly Decentralized and Limitless Network
https://uniris.io/
September 09, 2019
Cryptocurrency economy introduced a disruptive way to invest & protect assets, irrespective of government or regulatory instability. Yet it remains a promise to be delivered. Uniris aims to deliver that promise of secure, scalable, decentralized World. After 4 years of research, Uniris introduces ARCH consensus that provides 10-9 risk of fraud even at 90% malicious network activity unlike dBFT, dPoS or DAG. Similarly, even after a decade of mathematically proven trust of blockchains, mass adoption remains a pipe dream. Uniris brings mass adoption by providing the missing link of Human/Computer interaction by using a tamper-proof biometric authentication inside a new blockchain ecosystem - truly decentralized and designed to survive for centuries.

In the following document and through four successive publications, we present the Uniris solution and how its blockchain provides a counterpoint to every single weakness of current blockchains – provides a decentralized and interoperable identity for every use-case – supports millions of transactions per second avoiding known security breaches – provides a governance integrating the community as a whole and, finally, offers the prospect of a tamper-proof, universal and risk-free human-machine interaction system.
