This groundbreaking procedure, known as the Blalock-Taussig shunt, was executed by Dr. Alfred Blalock, surgical technician Vivien Thomas, and pediatric cardiologist Dr. Helen Taussig on a 15-month-old infant named Eileen Saxon, who suffered from Tetralogy of Fallot, commonly referred to as ‘blue baby syndrome.’ This condition caused oxygen-poor blood to circulate, giving her skin a bluish tint and jeopardising her survival. The innovative surgery involved creating a connection between the subclavian artery and the pulmonary artery, significantly enhancing blood flow to the lungs and increasing oxygen levels in the bloodstream.
