Memory, Affect, Play & Web Arcades
LONDON SOUTH BANK UNIVERSITY

Student: Dinis Guarda
Emotional (Dis)(Orders Memory, Affect, Play & Web Arcades My purpose in this final thesis is to reflect upon the parallels between the World Wide Web and The Arcades Project where Benjamin managed his efforts to represent and to critique the bourgeois experience of nineteenth-century history, and, in so doing, to liberate the suppressed "true history" perception that underlay the ideological mask of time and creation of meaning. The whole WWW (World Wide Web) - in the bustling, cluttered, technological, search engine- and user-generated digital arcades, streets and interior merging - is a fascinating parallel to Benjamin’s Arcades and also a powerful equivalent process to the present production and creation of thinking, ideas and art.

Circular Economy, the Access Economy Or a New Blockchain driven Sharing Economy?
Medium
March 09, 2023
The Circular Economy, the Access Economy is a fairly recently emerged concept that is considered by many to be a more appropriate expression to describe what has become known as the larger concept of “Sharing Economy”. Some have suggested that the sharing economy is not so much about sharing as some corporations that rose from the concept became increasingly centralised. After all, those that offer rooms, sustainable energy, or car drives do so for money rather than sharing out of the goodness of their hearts. Another trend highlights the concept of social impact, the way to create a sustainable economy, better ways to reward work, and how the new technology blockchain is disrupting and offering solutions to correctly reward the healthy peer to peer P2P basis foundation of the circular economy / sharing economy.

Ideas about the Future of Bitcoin and Blockchain
Medium
March 09, 2023
The Future of Bitcoin — and Blockchain is now and you better take it seriously!

“Instant transactions, no waiting for checks to clear, no chargebacks (merchants will like this), no account freezes (look out Paypal), no international wire transfer fee, no fees of any kind, no minimum balance, no maximum balance, worldwide access, always open, no waiting for business hours to make transactions, no waiting for an account to be approved before transacting, open an account in a few seconds, as easy as email, no bank account needed, extremely poor people can use it, extremely wealthy people can use it, no printing press, no hyper-inflation, no debt limit votes, no bank bailouts, completely voluntary. This sounds like the best payment system in the world!”

Decomposing the Metaverse Digital Twins NFTs Infrastructure and architecture
Medium
March 07, 2023
Meta + Verse
Metaverse is composed of two words: Meta + Verse.

To better understand the complex topic of the metaverse, it is worth looking at the etymological origin of the ancient Greek word “meta”. Its original meaning is “beyond,” transcending, “after,” or “behind”.

Metaphysics, Metacognition are some words that use the prefix “Meta”. Metacognition, for example, means to have an awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes. The “transcending” sense of meta has a powerful and even poetic sense in our society and our human tribal operating systems. The metaverse is then a digital counterpart to the physical world in which we live.

How to Deploy A Blockchain Project
ztudium
November 11, 2022
Although still a new technology, Blockchain is something that any company or business will sooner or later have to leverage, as a key feature of their technology strategy. Any organisation that wants to be part of the map in the next 10 years, will have to begin adopting blockchain now, even if the technology is still emerging.

The business world is undergoing a massive disruptive technological fast forward transformation. Blockchain is part of that disruption. The technology has been named as one of the major inventions of the last decades, and the reach of its impact is compared to the one of electricity. Blockchain brings new opportunities but also challenges, because it challenges us to re-think the way society and businesses operate and interact.

Circular Economy and Blockchain Disruption Challenges
ztudium
November 11, 2022
The present global economy is driven by non-linear economic models based on multiple technologies and energies that have a considerable number of dysfunctionalities and contradictions. We live in a world shaped by an original Marxist economic model that developed itself into a socialist centralised model, which coexists now with a (paradoxically) neo-liberal technology hyper-capitalist model. The current system is complex, fragmented, and deeply bipolar, something which affects most of the governments in practice.

Hacking The DNA of Humanity with Blockchain and AI

November 09, 2022
DNA, the famous double helix carrying the genetic instructions used in the growth, development, functioning and reproduction of all living beings, is fundamentally, the critical way of storing the biosphere, and as part of it, all of humanity’s information. It is the foundation of life as we scientifically know it. Conventionally, it gathers and encodes instructions for making living things, but it can be encrypted for other purposes and to evolve according to its organic nature evolutionary programming. Scientists and technologists from all kinds of subjects, as they deepen their understanding of its engineering, are adopting the biological DNA to store what seemed unimaginable some years ago, such as books, recordings, GIFs, and even planning things such as an Amazon gift card.

Blockchain and AI Technology: Benefiting the Ordinary Citizen Part 2

November 07, 2022
A dissection of the activities of a human being as far as living is concerned will show that there are routine stuff that we engage in as far as life is concerned, and then there are special events that only occur a few times in a lifetime. For instance, eating, making payments, and transportation are things that adult citizens tend to do every day, and these can be classified as routine activities. Then there are other things that a citizen will do such as voting, leisure activities such as taking a vacation, taking a course, or buying a new car. These are activities that are not routine in nature. People will only get married once or a few times in their lifetime. An individual may buy up to three or four cars in a lifetime, and these will not all be the same brand. But we find that whether activities of life are routine, occasional or special, AI and the blockchain might impact all these in some way.

How metaverse is marking new chapter in our cultural history
CNBC tv18
January 03, 2022
One can find an early, radical iteration of the metaverse in the cutting-edge sci-fi film The Matrix, written and directed by the Wachowskis in 1999. Set in a dystopian future where artificial intelligence (AI) has outsmarted the minds that created it, the film portrays human beings trapped in a fictional, computer-generated world. Neo, the main character, is a prisoner of the Matrix and is pursued by a group of mysterious, undercover rebels who want him to join them. But, instead, he is offered a blue pill and a red pill by Morpheus, the rebel faction leader. The blue pill would allow him to remain within the Matrix and erase the memory of the rebels, while the red pill would help him escape from the Matrix and experience the real world for the first time.

An Overview Of The Wellness Digital Economy
Intelligenthq.com
June 02, 2021
The Global Wellness Institute has defined the concept of wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. However, the concepts of wellness and wellbeing are slightly different. Wellbeing encompasses more than just physical health. Wellbeing is also the cultivation of healthy, strong relationships, of practising mindfulness, and a state of happiness and being comfortable, of giving of one’s self.

The rise of selftracking is an exciting development that can contribute to people being able to take charge of their own health and wellbeing. Other than that, cities are playing an increasing role in the promotion of wellness amongst their inhabitants. This is the new age of prevention: with companies like RoundGlass aiming to help people find balance, and the rise of meditation apps, it is now more accessible than ever to take personal wellbeing seriously.

Covid-19 Impact On Businesses: Building Resilience In the Digital Economy
Intelligenthq.com
February 23, 2021
Covid-19 has disrupted the entire world economy. Most businesses have been forced shut their activity for months and while governments all around the world have tried their best to support them, the economic freeze means that many have had to re-invent themselves to the new reality or face closure.

SMEs have been especially hit by the pandemic and as the Covid-19 continues its disruption, the livelihood of many entrepreneurs and SMEs owners have been threatened.

Only in 2020, UK retailers suffered their worst annual sales performance on record, driven by slump in demand for fashion and homeware products, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Likewise, more than 50,000 listed companies worldwide have lost around 19.4 trillion euros in value within the first six weeks of the pandemic. This decline is historically unprecedented for such a short time period.

The most immediate challenge for businesses is to stay afloat and become resilient by implementing operational resilience to withstand shocks and capture emerging opportunities. In this regard, the maturity of an organization’s operational resilience has the potential to dictate whether an organization will survive crisis situations. The ability to withstand operational shocks and continue to deliver core business processes in such situations must be seamlessly integrated into the pursuit of delivery excellence, cost efficiency and operational effectiveness.

There’s something in the human personality which resents things that are clear, and conversely, something which is attracted to puzzles, enigmas, and allegories. Stanley Kubrick

The challenge is to find out what one’s destiny to do.The challenge is how to cope with the challenges and the weight that life brings with it. What if You Were to Die Tomorrow? What if you could Learn how to Live Forever – today?

Digital Transformation, Blockchain and the Art Market
Intelligenthq.com
January 01, 2021
Our world is increasingly digital. The Art World will no exception and wil be going through digital transformation and special Blockchain has a power to change it in ways never seen

We journey through the city with the help of google maps, book tickets through eventbrite, and pay a coffee with an app installed on our phone. If the fever of digitization has taken the world by storm, and radically changed our experiences, there are still areas yet to be digitized. The world of the art is one of those few sectors.

The reason why is because historically the art sector tends to be seen as fragmented and inefficient, prone to irrational laws, besides being under funded, and very dependent on political circumstances. It has for centuries been largely informal, managed by elites and tribes. It is a sector that is still mostly unregulated and opaque and has led many players to be slow and resistant to innovative disruption, digitization and technological in depth innovation.

But one can actually look at the art market through the lens of a fantastic opportunity, even from a commercial standpoint, since it reaches out to sectors such as heritage, creative industries, technological developments in design, UX, UI, architecture, contemporary art, the cultural sector, trends and fashion among others. The world of art impacts education as well, in all its different sectors. The art economy, valued directly at nearly $50 billion, indirectly reaches around half a trillion USD.

8 Foundations of Blockchain DNA Architecture Part 1
Intelligenthq.com
January 01, 2021
When we transition to a new development happening in terms of digital transformation, it is key to work collectively, in order to think and reflect about what is happening, and figure out the best possible outcomes.

Currently, we are seeing a new major technological development emerging, comparable to the invention of the Internet: the blockchain technology. It began one decade ago, partly with the invention of bitcoin and other digital currencies, which led developers and entrepreneurs to explore all kinds of its possible applications. These are still early days, but blockchain technology is promising to change the world, and its impact in humanity, might be similar to the invention of electricity.

Anyway, blockchain years are fast years, so one decade after the invention of bitcoin, what is happening in the blockchain ecosystem ? Independently of what people are saying and writing about blockchain both as a technology, and as an ideology and technological innovation ( in all its details, such as its crypto possibilities), one needs to analyse it by working through its theory and facts. With this in mind, in this article, I am describing 8 key principles about Blockchain’s DNA architecture.

Looking at tech and Fintech Industry, we did achieved some fantastic improvements in a world still unbanked, with a roughbly 3 billion plus people have no financial account. But on a geopolitical level we have other issues. We have a leaderless world that might be sleepwalking towards a repeat of its near meltdown in late 2008 and early 2009. Environmental, Social, and Governance ESG Investment Blueprint
citiesabc.com
June 20, 2020
Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) investment is a critical term that is often used synonymously with modern sustainable investing. This type of investment is based on three central factors to measure the sustainability and ethical impact of an investment in a company or business. In a world struggling with structural challenges, ESGs investment can actually make a difference for good in the funding and investment industry worldwide.

According to MSCI ESG Research, ESG investment is the consideration of environmental, social and governance factors alongside financial factors in the investment decision-making process. ESG investments are a set of standards that companies and investors need to follow when being involved in a potential investment operation. These are based on various criteria like Environmental criteria, social criteria and governance. This means organisations, banks and businesses are socially responsible investing, mission-related investing, or screening to create meaningful ways.

Under the ESG investing umbrella, there are three common investor objectives or motivations when considering an ESG strategy: Integration, Values and Impact. In order to achieve these objectives, institutional investors may pursue different approaches such as ESG integration, exclusionary or negative screening, or thematic investing, to name a few.

Smart cities, like the city states in the past embed the highest hopes of humany through the promise of harnessing the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) innovative technologies to improve lives and bring social harmony. Covid-19 Is a Chance to Build a new cities abc Magna Carta Charter of Liberties for Humanity with 4IR, smart cities Tech, Blockchain AI
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;”
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

“Magna Carta, meaning ‘The Great Charter’, is one of the most famous documents in the world. Originally issued by King John of England (r. 1199–1216) as a practical solution to the political crisis he faced in 1215, Magna Carta established for the first time the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law. Although nearly a third of the text was deleted or substantially rewritten within ten years, and almost all the clauses have been repealed in modern times, Magna Carta remains a cornerstone of the British constitution.
Most of the 63 clauses granted by King John dealt with specific grievances relating to his rule. However, buried within them were a number of fundamental values that both challenged the autocracy of the king and proved highly adaptable in future centuries. Most famously, the 39th clause gave all ‘free men’ the right to justice and a fair trial. Some of Magna Carta’s core principles are echoed in the United States Bill of Rights (1791) and in many other constitutional documents around the world, as well as in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the European Convention on Human Rights (1950).” source Article by Claire Breay, Julian Harrison, in https://www.bl.uk/magna-carta/articles/magna-carta-an-introduction

“Our nation and our civilization were built on production, on building. Our forefathers and foremothers built roads and trains, farms and factories, then the computer, the microchip, the smartphone, and uncounted thousands of other things that we now take for granted, that are all around us, that define our lives and provide for our well-being. There is only one way to honor their legacy and to create the future we want for our own children and grandchildren, and that’s to build. Marc Andreessen “It’s Time To Build”
https://a16z.com/2020/04/18/its-time-to-build/

“In the 5 million years since early hominids first emerged from east Africa's Rift Valley, the Earth's climate has grown increasingly erratic. Over cycles lasting hundreds of thousands of years, arid regions of central Africa were overrun by forests, forests gave way to grasslands and contiguous landscapes were fractured by deep lakes.

It was within the context of this swiftly changing landscape that humans evolved their sizable brains and capacity for adaptive behavior, said Rick Potts, director of the Human Origins Program at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History”

Humanity has faced many crises and economic recessions and through our evolution we have changed and adapted. Our capacity to change and evolve is what distinguishes us from most other of nature’s creatures. It is also and foremost our capacity to dream and hope. The coronavirus pandemic is creating a crisis that not only has vast healthcare, biological, economic, leadership, political, social, and moral implications but turns upside down the way we have been living, working, undertaking business, investment and life. All we need to do is to pull our collective thoughts, ideas and resources together and develop a strategy on the next stage of our evolution.

Fastech AI Blockchain and the $3 Trillion Fashion Industry Part 1
Intelligenthq.com
May 01, 2020
AI and Blockchain are the foundational trust technologies of our time. Blockchain or distributed ledger technologies have a holistic DNA and multiple capacities that can fix issues such as supply chain track record to create trust in provenance of products, identify sources of production and manufacturing and also fix some middle men serious issues. AI on the other hand can improve from all areas of understanding data to optimisation of processes in the global business landscapes. These are optimisation of resources, preview issues and finding the best approach to tackle issues, automate and predict and manage in real time high concerns of production, distribution and quantify and optimise processes and operations.

The challenges however with these advanced and new technologies is that it requires lots of maturity and a strong road map how to push them forward in an ethical beneficial way, plus how to make it a global powerhouse driven by the right values ( not only maximisation of profit) that work to improve real things, besides the hype and find real scope and scalable solutions to entire industries and sectors. When it comes to AI and blockchain, can these techs and the new fashtech movement contribute to an optimisation of the fashion industry?

The $3 trillion fashion industry, which is 4% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a complex ecosystem, on the verge of collapse. Be no fool, you are part of it! As a consumer, designers, fashion industry player and producer plus the end of the chain shopper, we are all deeply embedded in this attractive industry, which has lots of issues and concerns. and is on high alert on the agenda. Moreover its $800 billion global apparel industry, has become notoriously famous for its challenges when it comes to:

Ethical treatment of industry workers;
IP, counterfeit supply chain issues;
Environmental damage and sustainability
Unlawful competition, and lack of rentability of the industry.
1 in 6 people in the world is somehoinvolved in the fashion industry. How then, can AI and DLT blockchain technologies help solving some of these issues and challenges?

Central Banks and Blockchain Part 1
Intelligenthq.com
May 01, 2020
If there is an institution that can impact profoundly the economy of a country, it is that of Central Banks. Some of them, like the US Federal Reserve or the European Central Bank, have such an influence in the worldwide economy that they may prevent – or even start – a financial crisis. They are the last watchdog, reckoning whenever the economy is taking the wrong turn and trying to pull it back onto the right path.

Their mechanisms, though somehow limited and opaque for the wider public, are there to ensure private financial institutions comply with the national policy guidelines while their in-depth, exclusive research help governments to set out, precisely, the national economic policy. They are the only financial institutions allowed to control all the money reserves of a country and they need to deal with all sorts of external threats to keep the economy in track. Including, of course, lack of resources, capabilities and the overall instability of a globalized economy.

The problems central banks face are deep and complex, so most of them have embraced new technological advancements as a sort of balm for their challenges. That’s why, according to a report carried out by the World Economic Forum in 2019, approximately 40 central banks worldwide have laid their eyes upon a new technology that may well help them to meet their responsibilities: blockchain.

Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Policies and Regulations: Challenges, Opportunities For Governments And Businesses
Intelligenthq.com
May 01, 2020
Overview, Statistics, Regulatory views and Research about how governments and businesses are exploring and adapting to blockchain and cryptocurrencies’ policies and regulation

There have been big questions about what role of blockchain, cryptocurrencies, digital assets, tokens and tokenomics play in society. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain – the technology behind cryptocurrencies – have become a global phenomenon. Since the creation of Bitcoin, the world’s most well known cryptocurrency, the research on cryptocurrency and blockchain has become widespread and has generated an enormous amount of concerns among various countries’ governments, central banks and regulators. The most common concern is how to regulate cryptocurrencies. Because of its specific distributed and disintermediated nature, current rules cannot be applied to them. In this paper, we are going to go through some of the most prominent trends while assessing the complexity behind blockchain and cryptocurrency regulation.

Global economists such as Nouriel Roubini continue with his passionate assertion that 99% of cryptocurrencies are worth ZERO. He also states that it is fintech, and not blockchain, that will bring innovation to the banking system. Other major personalities such as the ex Governor of the Bank of England and heads of major investments banks have publicly attacked crypto currencies, but most of them have already initiated studies and deployment of the technology.

The president of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, has said central banks and financial bodies should protect consumers but be open to innovations such as cryptocurrencies. Lagarde, who was previously the head of the International Monetary Fund, told the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of the European Parliament that central banks and financial regulators should embrace the opportunities presented by change.

Christine Lagarde via an IMF news release, said: ”In the case of new technologies – including digital currencies – that means being alert to risks in terms of financial stability, privacy or criminal activities, and ensuring appropriate regulation is in place to steer technology towards the public good. But it also means recognising the wider social benefits from innovation and allowing them space to develop.” Lagarde claimed that regulation of cryptocurrencies is “inevitable” and necessary on an international level. She also said that blockchain innovators are “shaking the traditional financial world” and having a clear impact on incumbent players.

How Government, Central Banks, Regulators Can Deal With Digital Assets, Crypto And Tokenisation
Intelligenthq.com
May 01, 2020
Digital Innovation, Fintech, decentralised technologies and crypto currencies also known as digital currencies are here to stay. The cryptocurrency market as we speak is a $1,6 trillion ecosystem that no one can ignore in the context of a $80 Trillion GDP world economy.

Context Digital Innovation, Fintech, decentralised technologies and crypto currencies
Major global banks are using crypto currencies and blockchain related technologies. There is a major transition going on in the financial and banking industries that will be completely disrupted. Major banks and financial institutions started already adopting cryptocurrencies.

Retail-banking clients and institutional investors are expressing increased interest in these areas and the use of digital currencies as an innovative financial vehicle and in the distributed-ledger technology (DLT) that underlies it: particularly innovations such as blockchain.

The majority of investors, fintechs, and venture capital funds are making a sustained commitment to cryptocurrency, regarding it as the future of money. Banks, financial organisations and central banks can no longer afford to ignore this challenge and also the opportunity.

Of course, this represents a new innovative area of finance and money with many organisations having reasons to be cautious. We have seen how some major governments, regulators and financial services leaders, remain skeptical of the value that cryptocurrencies and digital assets have as an asset class, since individual cryptocurrencies have lost, at times, significant market capitalization (including this year).

During 2020 and especially the early months of 2021 -within the COVID-19 crisis context-, cryptocurrencies have experienced volatility, and their reputation has been influenced by their association of Bitcoin, the most prominent cryptocurrency, and with criminal acts such as the Twitter hack of July 2020. But in parallel with the endorsement of Bitcoin by the likes of JP Morgan and industry leaders like Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk, no one can ignore this.

Cryptocurrencies are a fast-growing sector with great and challenging prospects. But they also offer major opportunities when used wisely and if governments and their regulators’ work are aligned with entrepreneurs and investors to create sandboxes, in order to educate themselves, the market and to raise awareness of risks and opportunities.

Cryptocurrencies and decentralised finance (DeFi) platforms are now outperforming conventional banking products while offering greater efficiency, less bureaucracy, and more transparency.

Major financial organisations and banks are launching a variety of digital assets and specific cryptocurrency offerings. Some of the major solutions include processing payments, providing escrow services, facilitating international cash transactions, helping customers exchange their money for bitcoins, and even making loans in this currency.

Intelligenthq.com
May 01, 2020
FINTECH NOW

The Fintech concept is a critical word of our times and comes from the connection of the terms “finance” and “technology”.

The Fintech term refers to any innovative business that uses technology to enhance or automate with technology solutions for financial services, money transactions and related b2b2c processes.

The Fintech word is a large concept and has been creating a broad and rapidly growing industry serving both consumers and businesses.

The fintech industry offers all types of solutions such as financial and digitisation of services, transactions and innovation within the big money and financial industry at large.

As we speak, the global economy and financial industry from mobile banking and insurance to cryptocurrency and investment apps, runs on fintech broad applications.

The fintech industry is huge and somehow now is almost everything in the financial industry.

Everything in the money and financial industry at the moment uses some kind or type of financial technology – fintech solution.

“Ignoring technological change in a financial system based upon technology is like a mouse starving to death because someone moved their cheese.” Chris Skinner

What is DeFi?
Intelligenthq.com
May 01, 2020
Decentralized Finance (DeFi) aims to recreate the traditional financial system with fewer frictions. It is mainly composed by open source platforms, accessible by anyone and driven mainly by automated computer programs and less and less by centralized entities and humans.

What is DeFi?
DeFi, short for Decentralized Finance, is a decentralized open-source system that allows for code smart contract driven stratagems to use in traditional financial – society activities such as banking, lending, borrowing, supply chain, structuring derivative products. By its nature, it encourages the purchase and sale of securities to be carried out through digital networks of blockchain nodes without the need for intermediaries.

Money, Wealth, Social Media and Gamification
Dinis Guarda
May 01, 2020
There is a Shift between Money, Co-creation, Social Media and Gamification

We are in a historical paradox crossroad for humanity. It is thus a frightening time for the world finances and economics where at the same time the concept of money is pushed further through the advent of social media, co-creation, the social graph and concepts such as Gamification that are taking over of reality and creating a kind of twilight zone. On one hand there is extreme poverty mixed with extreme wealth, the advent and rise of countries that just 10 years ago were bankrupt, considered third world or out of the limelight. All of this surrounded by a profusion of media and news where the keywords are all around: demonstrations, “occupy” wall street, crisis, problems and the always eternal global local conflicts mixed with technology, startups, software, venture capital money, crowdfunding and so forth.

Smart Cities the Heartbeat of the 21st Century Covid Driven New Age of Agility
In Rome you long for the country; in the country – oh inconstant! – you praise the distant city to the stars.
Horace

We will neglect our cities to our peril, for in neglecting them we neglect the nation.
John F. Kennedy

The axis of the earth sticks out visibly through the centre of each and every town or city.
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

“A smart city is an intelligent town that provides enormous possibilities for human growth through art, culture, social, architectural, economic, political, environmental, and scientific flowering with the optimal mix of nature, technology, humanity, and arts.”
Amit Ray

Cities are the epicentre of our societies and we propose here to offer an ABC to define and desmistify the concept of smart cities and why we need it more than ever, if we want to solve a lot of the global problems we are facing today and in the future.

Over half of the planet now lives in cities, and more than two-thirds of the world’s population will be urbanized by 2050. Cities are the epicentre of all the challenges we are facing today and with the advent of covid-19, millions of people have had their modus operandi changed and this has led to exposing the fragility of the social, environmental, psychological and economic / financial systems. The crisis has raised questions on whether the exposed fragility is sustainable or do we need to modify or change these systems going forward to a new paradigm. To achieve this paradigm shift, we need new solutions and narratives to re-build these social, environmental, psychological and economic / financial systems, which at its core is a circular economy that is inclusive. Cities have to proactively work across borders to build coalition networks and to find solutions for work, healthcare, finance and new social models. Key to this, in terms of speed and impact, is the increased adoption of technology and to digitally transform these Cities which contribute to four-fifths of global GDP, and are taking centre stage in securing an inclusive, safe, productive, sustainable, and resilient future for humanity.

What are Smart Cities? Features, Frameworks, Quotes

April 25, 2020
What are Smart cities? Smart Cities Features, Framework, Insights, Thoughts, Quotes

The world is now urban and humanity lives and fosters in cities and smart cities are framework of our times. For the first time in history, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities and the numbers will increase and citiess need to be prepared to become 100% smart cities. Over 90 percent of urban growth is occurring in the developing world, with a population young and ambitious but also struggling with the future of work, the challenges of the Covid-19 Pandemic and economic recessions coming out of that but also lacking a narrative and storyline that can create better present and future.

We need more than ever a bold new Magna Carta of citizens liberties and we need a cities based new wave of ideas and innovation that usess smart cities frames as a ways to foster and increase holistic solutions for society, industry and academy where we should focus on creating short term solutions and adding value creation for the estimated 70 to 100 million new residents to urban areas each year. Demand for smarter societies and improvement of services in urban areas is therefore increasing exponentially, and the capacity of cities and their local governments to manage this demand is challenged. Smart cities can be a foundational infrastructure and framework that if well used can create a better and more inclusive technologic Sustainability ecosystem.

Smart cities have to focus on building a smarter society using standards smartness and focus on collective intelligence alignment. The most important when designing a city and planning smart cities is the emphasis that needs to be on the design of adding value to the city and adapt the tech to solve problems and not the other way around

A smart city is all about building connections which transcend geography—something more deep-rooted and emotional. Better infrastructure is an integral part of building smart cities, but first comes building awareness about existing resources and then preparing for easier accessibility and navigation. The starting point is changing our obsolete addressing system. I have co-founded a digital addressing system that creates an eight-digit alphanumeric address for every location in a city. This can form the crux of all services: transportation, retail, governance, emergency services, etc. My aim is that people should be able to travel hassle-free, thereby forming indelible connections.
— Vaibhav Belgaonkar, co-founder, Joomzee, Geotracker Pvt Ltd, Mumbai

The world’s 100 largest cities represent around 70% of the world GDP and has 974 million inhabitants; more than a fifth of the global urban population. Tokyo is the largest, with 37.4 million inhabitants; to get into the top 100 list, a city would need to match the population of Ürümqi in China with 4.4 million people. To make the top ten, a city would need 19.2 million inhabitants.

If we go back on time in 1800, London topped the largest 100 list, with 1.1 million inhabitants. A city with the population of Turin (at just 66,000 inhabitants) would have made the list and a city with 400,000 inhabitants would have been one of the ten largest. But by 2020, a city would need to be almost 50 times this size to make the top 10 cut.

Blockchain the Missing Link for Cities and Countries infrastructure as COVID-19 Exposes Global Infrastructure Fragilities
citiesabc.com
April 13, 2020
Blockchain technologies and related systems can create new global supply chains solutions for cities and governments but lots needs to be done
COVID-19 has been increasingly exposing the fragility of global supply chains. Blockchain technology and its related associated solutions and systems could be the missing link in building new avenues and resilience.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted nearly every part of the global economy and especially its supply chains. The supply chain industry will probably change irreversibly, due to the Coronavirus pandemic and this will be increasingly important in food and healthcare industries, along many other areas where social distancing becomes restrictive.

The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the economic and social vulnerabilities for the global supply chain and the need for the world to digitally transform. This pandemic demonstrates many organisations fragility, especially those that have a high dependence on markets such as India and China to meet their raw materials or finished products’ needs, which are now leading to serious disruption.

The COVID-19 fallout is likely to impact principally food and core industries especially healthcare companies whom are reshaping the entire supply chains to strengthen the sourcing, provenance, risk management processes to become more resilient.

Digital Transformation and the 4IR – AI, Blockchain, IoT, Fintech
Intelligenthq.com
April 02, 2020
We live in a fast, disruptive, technology-driven world where concepts like digital transformation and the 4IR (industry 4.0) – AI, Blockchain, IoT, Fintech, have influence on everything we do as individuals, and in the shaping of our cities and countries. This is a world filled with promise and opportunities but also many challenges.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution was defined by Klaus Schwab as the fourth major industrial era in the aftermath of the 18th century Industrial Revolution. It ‘s main characteristic is the fusion/interconnection of technologies which are leading to a blurring between the physical, digital, and biological spheres; collectively referred to as cyber-physical systems.

What is driving the 4IR is a set of data driven technologies that have the potential to radically change our economic models, increase productivity, and improve our lives. The 4IR results from an increasingly quick digital transformation happening in the world. That digital transformation brought us many evident benefits, but is now stepping into a second stage that brings us to the verge of a whole new set of important challenges. One of these is the growing awareness of how our economic activities are impacting climate change, the other is job loss and a radical transformation of what we understand as work and how that defines our identity as humans.

2018 was annus horribilis in terms of global climate catastrophes. It is irrefutable that the present economic system and human action are triggering the changes in climate. On the other hand, 4IR’s most praised asset is their ability to increase productivity. But what kind of productivity are we talking about? Do we want productivity at all costs, with its implicit externalities, such as its impact on climate change, or are we able to do it more sustainably and mindful of the waste it produces? And can the 4IR enable us to shift to more beneficial economic systems such as the circular economy?

Another important risk of the 4IR is how it affects what we understand now as jobs/work. We have already seen how the way we work and live has changed so much over the past decades; this will only increase. In the first stage, 4IR will impact primarily the lives of machine operators and food workers, but job loss is expected to expand to all kinds of areas. This is a development that has sparked much public concern and that governments and nations as a whole cannot ignore anymore.

In this article, I begin by introducing and describing some of the key concepts of digital transformation and 4IR, which are currently taking our world by storm. We will then focus on some of the key technologies driving the current shift and bringing most change to the world. Subsequently, we shall tackle what are the opportunities and challenges that these technologies and the 4IR bring.

Digital Transformation and the 4IR – AI, Blockchain, IoT, Fintech Part 2
Intelligenthq.com
April 02, 2020
The Third Industrial Revolution

Digital Transformation and the 4IR – AI, Blockchain, IoT, Fintech is not a steady, fixed concept. It has evolved swiftly, over the course of various years, by gradual improvements of the technology, particularly the Internet, which fostered increasing digitization. Jeremy Rifkin, a US economist, futurist, and sociologist, who has analysed the shifts in society due to technology over the course of various decades, has written widely about the topic. He was the first one to tackle the impact of digital technologies and how these were triggering what he saw as a profound industrial shift.

Digital Transformation and the 4IR – AI, Blockchain, IoT, Fintech Part 3

The Five Most Important Data Driven Technologies Shaping the 4IR

Five major data driven techs that shape the Industry 4.0 are AI, Blockchain, IoT, Robotics, and Fintech. What is the contribution that each of these bring to the 4IR ?

AI: The Powerful Search Engine at the Core of the 4IR
Artificial Intelligence can be defined as the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behaviour. We do not need to think of complicated robots to understand or picture AI. All things that augment “artificially” human intelligence are part of AI. How our phones work now is a perfect example of how AI advances and empowers all areas of society. Smartphones have been expanding their capabilities through a whole set of operations of algorithms that are being improved through feedback loops, using and analysing the data gathered by their users.

AI’s evolution is also being shaped by better algorithms and innovations in terms of computer hardware research, which has evolved quite significantly in recent years. One important innovation in the field are neurotrophic chips. These are inspired by the way biological brains work but are more energy efficient and can store more data. They are designed to access and interpret sensory data such as images and sound. Moreover, they can respond to changes in that data, in an organic adaptable way, which is not specifically programmed.

On the other hand, quantum computing is a promising technology that can escalate AI’s evolution even further. Quantum computers perform a type of computing that is different from binary digital electronic computers, which are based on transistors. Common digital computing uses data encoded into binary digits (bits), each of which is always in one of two definite states (0 or 1). Quantum computation, on the other hand, uses quantum bits, which can be in superpositions of states. This enables them to be way faster and capable to deal with extreme volumes of complex data, thus eventually becoming able to perform massive simulations; like the ones undertaken by physicists at CERN’s Hadron collider.

Quantum computing is expected to evolve even more in the near future; something that is badly needed, because the quantity of data we produce is escalating at exponential rate. This means that we will also need even more powerful computers to work out what to do with those gigantic quantities of data.

Quantum computing and Neuromorphic ships are expected to impact to ever greater heights the 2 most promising areas of AI fostering the 4IR: machine learning and deep learning.

Digital Transformation and the 4IR – AI, Blockchain, IoT, Fintech part 4
Intelligenthq.com

III. IoT – Connecting Matter with People

The Internet of Things (IoT) is another powerful tech that is enabling the swift transition to the 4IR. The IoT can be simply defined as objects that “talk to each other”. Matthew Evans, the IoT programme head at techUK, says: “Simply, the Internet of Things is made up of devices – from simple sensors to smartphones and wearables – connected together”.

Sensors are increasingly getting smaller and cheaper thus the IoT will tend to expand tremendously. Its capabilities are promising, as with a swift IoT architecture, companies and people are able to improve efficiency and innovate processes, and methodologies. It is not exempt of problems though and one possible solution to these would be the convergence of blockchain and the Internet of Things. Currently there are existing implementations, solutions, and initiatives happening experimenting with the use of this convergence.

According to an article by i-scoop (2018), Internet of Things applications are by definition distributed so it’s only normal that blockchain (which is a distributed ledger technology) will play a role in how devices will communicate directly between each other. Blockchain technology enables the possibility of keeping a ledger of not just devices but also how they interact and, potentially, in which state they are and how they are “handled” in the case of tagged goods.

Some tech giants have started to research how blockchain can help the IoT, which is the case of a recent project by IBM Blockchain. For IBM Blockchain, the most interesting possibilities for Blockchain are exactly the combination of AI, IoT, and blockchain across industries.

IoT will then be one of the key technologies to implement the cyber physical spaces of the 4IR that Klaus Schwab speaks about.

March 29, 2020
“Men come together in cities in order to live:
they remain together in order to live the good life.” — Aristotle

What is the city but the people? — William Shakespeare

“Urbanization, one of humankind’s most successful and ambitious programs, is the triumph of the unnatural over the natural, the grid over the organic… Underway on a scale never before witnessed, one side effect of urbanization is the liberation of vast depopulated territories for the efficient production of ‘nature’.” — Bruce M

“A smart city is an intelligent town that provides enormous possibilities for human growth through art, culture, social, architectural, economic, political, environmental, and scientific flowering with the optimal mix of nature, technology, humanity, and arts.”― Amit Ray, Peace Bliss Beauty and Truth: Living with Positivity

Cities are all about people's lives. Big social groups of people living and collaborating together. Whether you are in London, New York, Singapore, Tokyo or Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Barcelona these cities offer the best in the world and all these cities are able to serve so many millions of people together because of their adoption of smart technologies which makes them leading smart cities.

Smart Cities are the heart of the beating of the best in the world and in the interstice of all challenges, innovation and concerns. Special when it comes to organisation of society, citizens, innovation, technology and data, smart cities are the center of all operations and challenges and opportunities. A Smart city definition is still open but is an urban area that uses different types of 4IR - Fourth Industrial Revolution - technology, special digital transformation and solutions such as blockchain, artificial intelligent, electronic Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to collect data and then use insights gained from that data to manage assets, resources and services efficiently.

Smart cities, like the city states in the past, embed the highest hopes of humanity through the promise of harnessing the Fourth Industrial Revolution 4IR innovative technologies for better lives and social harmony. However, smart cities represent also and could incarnate the challenges, fears of a dystopian ecosystem of over ‘controlled lives’, society in some kind of panopticons governed by the emergence and disruption coming out of artificial intelligence, IoT, Blockchain and automated devices augmented tools and software digital transformation systems.

The Smart City Revolution In The Era Of AI, Blockchain And Big Data

“A smart city is an intelligent town that provides enormous possibilities for human growth through art, culture, social, architectural, economic, political, environmental, and scientific flowering with the optimal mix of nature, technology, humanity, and arts.” ― Amit Ray, Peace Bliss Beauty and Truth: Living with Positivity

More than half of the world population live in cities, and a total of 6 billion people is expected to do that by 2045. Cities in both developed and developing countries face a common challenge: how to use digital technologies to respond to citizens’ demands for better quality living environments in a more efficient and dynamic manner, and create more efficient commercial environments.

Government bodies face the urgency to adapt all new 4IR technologies at the service of their cities. And that is a massive task given the complexity of the current digital world. All these technologies have to work together to maximize the impact as well as position the cities at the forefront of the technology race.

But building a smart city of the future requires a joint effort across multiple entities and work towards the same objective. Cities aren’t perennial objects but a rather organic entity: they breath and evolve over time. The “smart” part of a city would mean to build a “nervous system” based on Big Data, AI, IoT, Cloud computing, 5G and all the other 4IR tech to make those cities to perceive, think, self-learn and grow.

Why Digital Transformation: A Must Read List
Intelligenthq.com
January 20, 2020
Now, it is visible to everyone. Our world is governed by digits. Digits transform our lives. Our best personal assistant, trainer, secretary, teacher, is our smartphone, the one we all hold in our pockets. In just 12 years (since the invention of the iphone), our world became completely transformed by those small digital machines loaded with powerful chips coded in ones and zeros. We have been swiped by a wave of profound digital transformation so just, that is even hard to hold our breath.

These computation devices have had their sizes reduced incredibly over time, but their capabilities keep expanding exponentially. It has been a long journey since the invention of the first digital calculating machine during the forties, subsequently computers and then the invention of the internet who just turned 40, this year, as I mention in this interview. All these technological breakthroughs, have shaped the world as we know it now. The web and its devices became the core instruments around which we govern our lives. These impact the way we live, work, study, and relate to each other.

Shaped by quick technological evolution, we face subsequent disruptions to our known systems and behaviours. Business models, governance processes, socialization and even mind sets, forced to evolve quickly. Humans change their mindset in a decade.

What I just described is called Digital transformation. What triggered it was the increasing widespread digitisation of the world.

Getting Ready For The Tsunami: AI Evolution, Blockchain and Technological Singularity

The ones old enough to remember, might recall the times when image communication seemed a far distant impossible reality… a futuristic dream that would never be achieved! Now, we can have a voice call with someone who is climbing the Himalayas, while sitting in the comfort of our home, through Skype, Whattsapp, Zoom, Signal etc etc etc…

In the last few decades, we have seen what seems like reality surpassing imagination. Incredible technological advancements are happening at such quick pace that one is almost incapable to keep up with all the innovations. And one of the most radical inventions that is promising a tsunami in our lives is AI.

The tsunami AI, has been out there actually for a long time. Getting Ready For The Tsunami: AI Evolution, Blockchain and Technological Singularity
intelligenthq.com
March 12, 2019

It has been discreetly operating and being developed in research and development labs located in Universities and Tech Corporations, scattered in the world. Over the past decade it has gained momentum, and is now applied across disparate industries ranging from healthcare to manufacturing to retail and beyond.

AI raises hopes yes, but also fears. If it can help immensely the world it can also bring us to the edge of catastrophe, if one considers that AI can eventually surpass humans in terms of intelligent cognition. Will the scenario of machines overturning humans become a reality ? Or will we have what some call a “friendly AI?” What explains this intense period of development of AI over the past decade, is the exponential growth of Big Data! With such extreme quantities of data being produced all the time, we urgently need a system to organize it and secure it, in a way that some of the threats inherent to AI can be prevented. Possibly blockchain can be the underlying architecture, sustaining it and securing AI. These are some of the challenges that will be talked about in this article.

The Future of Finance
hedgethink.com
September 17, 2018
The Future of Finance
Financial institutions are becoming driven by data and tech
New technologies are and will rapidly reshape the entire financial services spectre.
Fintech that’s no longer the headline, it’s now the industry reality together with new digitalisation of money, crypto and regulatory frameworks.
Banks, insurers and asset managers are knee-deep in the potential of such technologies known as Fintech, data, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain.
These technologies are the main drivers helping transform the finance businesses and stay on top of ever-changing consumer expectations.
For instance, the financial services seen as a digital transformation infrastructure is now a fact.
Big Data, AI, blockchain automation, cloud computing, IoT and augmented reality are reshaping the present near future of financial services companies, the products they offer and the way they engage their customers.
Leaders of financial institutions must be the catalyst for change. All organisations need to have a clear fintech strategy that aligns with business model goals.
Those who are ready to manage innovation as an ongoing process, will be positioned to not just survive disruption—they will thrive. But we are humans and we need to have wisdom and joint efforts. Tech won’t save us if we don’t cooperate correctly.

At the moment the web universe, whether we call it internet or web has expanded towards a social platform of technologies.

Terra incognita, web transparency and a new metaphoric globalisation!

Lately technology and web are making humanity go faster… too fast in this wide “Terra incognita” (the latin expression for Unknown land, territorry, used by ancient navigators for the mysterious areas under discovery). Although we live in a over mapped world that has powerful navigation such tools as Google Maps, GPS, Foursquare, Geo location devices the notion of “direction” has somehow disappeared from the reality maps

10 Important Questions To Ask Yourself
Dinis Guarda
July 11, 2012
What are the questions I need to ask myself that can make a difference in my life and in the way I manage my drive and expectations. What are the questions to ask myself to get the most out of life? First of all it is important to remember the wise words by Voltaire:

Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.

To follow up I want to remember these wonderful wise words that Marisa Mayer one of the leading personalities and managers in Google told the audience at 92Y:

“Burnout is about resentment [Preventing it is] about knowing yourself well enough to know what it is you’re giving up that makes you resentful.”

So the question is how to drive your life in a focus way that you get the most out of your life and at the same time avoiding any negative burnout. How to make sure you are driven by value and challenging yourself and making sure you are going in the direction of your quest and happiness? I came up with these questions that are rather simple but at the same time help me focus and realise what is indeeed important to ask myself. here they are 10 simple questions that I want to remember at least once a month if not every week.

Success is being yourself

Success has various shapes and forms. But in the end there is only one success -to be able to spend your life with yourself and in your own way. Success is a long path and a journey of discovery. But there is only one success -to be able to spend your life in your own way, and specially with the person you see in the mirror. There are no formulas or secrets to success, but it has all to do with the way we look at our lives, our challenges, and the way we create our thoughts of it in the process of answering to the signs of reality.

Smart Vehicles & IoT – In A World Where Everything Is Connected, What Will Be The Role Of Smart Vehicles And What Changes It Will Bring To Our Lives?
Intelligenthq.com
April 02, 2001
Self-driving cars are smart, and it takes correspondingly smart people and technology to build them. With so many benefits to be reaped from such innovation, the ICT industry is investing in its own future by supplying technology required by the largest automakers worldwide and rising consumer trends, wishing to bring about the digital transformation of driving.

But the auto and ICT industries’ collaborative acceleration of smart car development does not come without its fair share of challenges. Digitised smart car technology is still in its primal stages; a feat of mechanical and electronic engineering that remains rudimentary. The stakes for smart car development are thus not only high because the outcome could be so overwhelming, but also because it is so uncertain. The road to digital transformation in the already high-tech realm of auto engineering is one which has yet to be drawn and driven, according to FAW (China’s first automotive firm to conduct R&D on smart cars).

4IR: AI, Blockchain, Fintech – Reinventing a Nation
ztudium / Emir Research
October 16, 2019
4IR: AI, Blockchain, Fintech – Reinventing a Nation analyzes how future digital tech can be used by developing nations.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution – 4IR – and all the emerging technologies are part of this concept, disrupting the world as we know it, particularly affecting nations and businesses that need to adapt quickly to avoid being left behind.

“4IR : AI, Blockchain, Fintech – Reinventing a Nation” offers insights into the present and future of the 4IR and how the associated variety of evolving technologies can and will have a significant impact on economies and societies. The book challenges nations to prepare for 4IR, asking them to focus on the needs of their society, leading to a future of sustainable, mindful economic growth on a global field, and how this, if rightly utilized, might contribute to a better world where nations are seen as collaborators rather than adversaries.

The book assembles an array of thought leaders who all contributed research to the book and is a testament to the impressive global network that Dinis Guarda has built during his 25-year career. The list of contributors includes a foreword by Eric Van der Kleij – the founder of London TechCity and Level 39, Emmanuel Daniel, founder of Asian Banker, Guenther Dobrauz Saldapenna, author and Director at PWC, Yoshiyuki Yamamoto, advisor to the UN, Efi Pylarinou, influencer in fintech, Thomas Power, global authority in social media and tech, Maria Fonseca, Anca Petre, Dr. Margarita Peredaryenko, Hernaldo Turrillo and Javed Khattak.

The book highlights the technologies of AI, Blockchain, Fintech, and IoT, which are at the core of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It discusses the risks and threats and explores how we can best harness the opportunities, strengths, and potential of these technology tools for the future advancement of countries and their citizens.
