Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez and Manuel Ancizu: a conversation around the “Project Management Handbook
YouTube
March 21, 2022
Manuel Ancizu and Antonio Nieto-Rodríguez have a conversation around the "Project Management Handbook: How to create, lead and sponsor successful projects" written by Antonio and published by Harvard Business Review (HBR).

Antonio Nieto-Rodríguez is the world's champion in making ideas and strategies come true through solid project management and consistent strategy implementation.

The "Project Management Handbook" was published in 2021. Antonio can be reached at https://antonionietorodriguez.com.

The conversation goes around the "Project management Handbook" and these are the highlights of the main topics covered:
- The "project economy", there are projects everywhere.
- Leading projects with an inspiring purpose: why are we doing this, what are the inspiring purpose and benefits?
- Engagement as a driving force for success: People want to do things that matter, being proud of the projects they are working on and having a positive impact in society; so moving up from just a system to work for a bigger purpose gets much more engagement, people are happier to work on that and you drive projects to success.
- Sustainability as a top trend: this criteria deserves to be considered from the very beginning of the design phase and along the whole lifecycle. Antonio calls it the "sustainability revolution".
- Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations are and will continue to be accomplished by a lot of different projects spread all over the world.
- The importance of good partnerships, sharing knowledge and collaborations that are beneficial for the parties involved.
- The role of technology and artificial intelligence: the need to embrace different ways of working and consider technology as an enabler. - -
- Project leaders and their contribution to a more sustainable world.
- Continuous learning as a key element of growth mindset and development.

Combining projects and sustainability: an approach to wind renewable energy

Climate change and sustainability are among the greatest challenges society faces and wind energy has turned into a prominent part of the renewable solution to transition to a green economy.

The European Green Deal in Europe, the Green Deal for the next ten years approved in the US and similar plans in other countries demonstrate the growing momentum towards sustainability, which has become a key driver for individuals and companies in decision making process, investments, materials, and innovations.

This global environment brings tremendous opportunities. Sustainable project managers can have a positive impact on people’s lives and create benefits for the planet. And that is possible, for example, with wind energy: Lots of projects worldwide and therefore, lots of potential for qualified project managers.

This presentation takes wind energy as a reference and aims to equip attendees with the knowledge and practical takeaways to thrive, contributing to achieve sustainability goals, carbon neutrality, and a better planet for all.

We will also learn how to measure projects’ carbon footprint and then, we will cover some impactful measures to integrate sustainability in projects, such as:
- People at the center
- Circular practices.
- Integrate sustainability from the very beginning of the project.
- Data at the service of sustainability: the more we know and the more accurate, the more impact we can create towards improving sustainability.
- Partnerships and alliances are key: this is a complex, multifunctional topic. Look for synergies among organizations. Don’t go alone, we are all together on this endeavour.

And we will finish with with key take-aways to thrive in sustainability

Ten common patterns of companies that successfully manage very innovative and disruptive projects. What can we learn from them?
Thinkers360
November 08, 2023

Context

Highly innovative and disruptive projects are dynamic, changing, contain new features or approaches and are built incrementally. It is possible that nobody has even worked on it before, but it has the potential to completely transform the market and the way of life that has been known up to that point.

Analyzing and deconstructing different examples of companies managing innovative projects successfully, the author has identified ten common patterns that can provide a solid guide to effectively manage such dynamic disruptive innovation projects and contribute to make them come true:

  1. Small project, small team, and controlled environment at all times.
  2. Release and unleash creativity to go beyond the current status quo.
  3. Develop the project close to headquarters for easy access to knowledge and resources.
  4. Involve internal employees for testing and feedback.
  5. Patience and persistence are essential to achieve truly innovative results.
  6. Test thoroughly before launching on a large scale.
  7. Constantly innovate while keeping the cost of change low.
  8. Deploy gradually, step-ty-step and progressively.
  9. Agile methodologies to advance gradually and quickly adapt to uncertainty.
  10. Re-evaluate budgets, teams, equipment and strategies as progress is made.

Conclusion

Highly innovative and disruptive projects are, by nature, novel and very dynamic as they seek to go beyond what it is available.

To achieve this, innovation must be channeled and managed properly; it is not simply a matter of having ideas, but of making them a reality.

These ten common patterns identified and deconstructed by the author can provide the solid framework needed to manage such disruptive innovation projects effectively.
