The Value of Storytelling on Motivating people
Medium
February 15, 2021
My public speaking experience has taught me that telling a good story always helps persuade my audience. The best stories deliver information and evoke emotional responses from the audience.
If you are preparing to deliver your next presentation, remember to contextualize your stories, tying them back to the case you are trying to make.
This way, you will build a more profound engagement with your audience, empowering them to take action and make their own decision.
Also, It is ok to share stories of success, failures, or occasions when others helped you because when you show you can learn from others, everyone can relate to it.
Storytelling skills require practice; however, they will help you to be more credible and respected in front of your audience.

How to use your favorite social network to promote equity and inclusion?
Medium
February 13, 2021
During the last years, I’ve been raising my attention on how technology, in particular, AI and Data Science, should be more inclusive, and I’ve been talking a lot with thought leaders in several areas to understand what we could do to change some things that we consider crucial to building equity and inclusiveness in tech.
One of my latest articles was exactly about these concerns in Artificial Intelligence, particularly regarding the gender gap. If you want, you can find the link at the end of this article.
If you, just like me, are trying to motivate women or people of color to get more involved in technology, STEM, AI, and Data Science, consider that you already have a large following of professionals and change-makers, and you are not alone; you have your social network.
I want to share here two simple steps that can help you to use your networks at work — engaging your colleagues, your students, your volunteer group, etc. — but also in family, leveraging it to be a better ally in your goal of promoting diversity, in technology as I do daily, or in any area of your interest.

After almost one year of pandemic, It’s evident for everybody that it’s quite challenging, but just like me, you can make it easier on yourself by focusing on some simple principles. Instead of aiming for perfection, let’s aim for happiness.
Our life changes sometimes affect us deeply, and we can feel like we are not good at changing quickly to adapt to every new change.
And accepting this, we are trying to keep the right mindfulness and understand that our days rarely go as we planned, especially my wife’s days for the demands of our children, that change everything at every moment.

This is How AI will Change the way you Date Online
Medium
February 08, 2021
The online dating industry is turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to take on “dating coach”.
The use of artificial intelligence, the science of computer programming to reproduce human processes such as thinking and decision-making, enables features that analyze conversations between users to determine their compatibility and suggest when they should meet.
AI-driven apps are already able to suggest places to go on a first date that are equidistant from both people’s homes, using geolocalization services that collect and share mobile information through smartphone users about restaurants, bars, and clubs nearby. Features like these help take the pressure off of organizing the first date.
The hyper-personalization and the data analysis provided by AI and Machine Learning allow dating apps to suggest suitable matches based on the user’s personality and also provide advice on first dates based on what each user knows (and what AI knows) about the other person.
Smart dating applications can also remind the user to ask, during the meeting, questions about the things that are important to the potential partner.

How to Communicate better and Set Boundaries that Works for you, When Working From Home
Medium
February 04, 2021
The pandemic disrupted the way many of us work every day, with many restrictions, reduction of social interactions. For many people, the home has become the new workplace, not without some relevant challenges.
Now, after almost one year of quarantines, lockdowns, and consolidated work-from-home setups, many of us had managed to settle down the situation and adapt perfectly to the new setup.
But even if vaccines are coming and we started to see the light at the end of this great tunnel, for many of us, the home office will continue to be a reality for many months ahead.
It is often difficult to combine work and family. Still, with the rise of global pandemics, these things have become much more difficult.
If you’re having a hard time keeping on schedule, consider setting boundaries with yourself and your children.

How to find Balance between Analytical and Emotional Intelligence
Medium
January 29, 2021
Maybe you don’t notice it, but it takes a great deal of energy to enable various parts of our brain to solve big problems and make critical business decisions.
On one side, we have the analytical network in our brain, which helps us solve problems and make decisions. On the other side, we have an empathic network that allows us to scan an environment and be open to fresh ideas.
And in our daily lives, we are all “fighting” to find the equilibrium between those two areas, continually trying to find out which network is our’ go-to’ in a given moment.
We are all in a constant learning process that will guide us to master the challenging task of judge how and when to move between the two.
In some moments, we are more likely to concentrate on specific facts and probabilities. Still, in a different situation, we may be more likely to focus on our feelings and the feelings of those around us. And these are contrasting behaviors, from the brain’s point of view, and in general, we are more inclined to one of the sides.

A quick reflection on some ethical implications of creative AI
Medium
January 21, 2021
Recently I started to analyze a trend taking AI towards a more “creative” space with the integration with human creativity.
As content generation capabilities of AI increase, it starts to be applied more often in the more diverse areas, raising concerns about how its content can be protected as intellectual property.
Let’s consider for a moment all the industries and sectors that rely on intellectual property to generate and capture value. This set includes software, electronics, consumer products, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, video games, film and television, journalism and news media, and music.
The market value of these industries and the individual players’ margins are closely tied to IP protection.
As AI contributes more and human beings contribute less to the value generated, we can expect to see more significant ambiguity around whether IP is protected soon.
In the near term, it doesn’t look like the policy environment is changing much. The current trend appears to be reaffirming human beings’ role as inventors and authors and patent and copyright offices in protecting endeavors of human creativity against AI-generated content.

An Overview of Creative AI
Medium
January 19, 2021
AI is advancing rapidly and continues to grow. Fitting it all in has put us into a new reality that is being built and though at times, though.
AI and Machine Learning capacity will increase exponentially in the coming years, executing more complex tasks that today are exclusive to human beings.
Still, there is a frontier that, in addition to not being overcome until now, must take a long time to be broken by the machines: creative and innovative tasks.
But a new path may be possible to accelerate this evolution: the integration between AI and human creativity that can generate even more extraordinary results.
As defined by Ed Newton-Rex in his article Creative AI — a reading list, AI can be defined as the simulation of machines' intelligence. In the same way, Creative AI is the simulation of creativity in machines.
There are enormous opportunities in this field, and we are only at the beginning of this creative revolution.
Innumerous AI systems are advancing in their ability to “create,” in some cases muddying the surrounding legal waters. I have selected here some exciting projects that are starting to explore this trend in the AI landscape

This is how Autonomous Trucks will reshape the Transportation industry
Medium
January 09, 2021
In the next years, driverless trucks will be routinely transporting freight on public roads — and not just in constrained environments like mines and ports as it’s happening already.
Of course, it may not happen today — may be up to 2023 or 2025, even if currently, 35% of all trucks sold are already expected to have some level of advanced driving assistance (e.g., automatic braking), already there are some concerns on how much less influence lower-level autonomous driving trucks can have on society.
Autonomous tech will come to long-haul, maybe before last-mile delivery — but we still need 4 or 5 years before it will start to be an ordinary thing. Nevertheless, serious players compete for a place in the front row today to be among the winners as the industry consolidates.
But with these groundbreaking changes, businesses will need to adapt, and employees will need to learn new skills. This workforce will need to be reskilled to ensure that they can sustain a healthy and productive workforce for the transportation industry.
A revolution is coming!

Can We Live Without Google?

Information (documents, emails, presentations, appointments, videos, images, etc.) is collectively stored in its cloud services, and we don’t have to make costly efforts to find what we want. We should not be surprised to find that more and more people are not memorizing relevant information because they trust that they can get it with their search skills.
The real point here is: do the benefits we receive from using the Google services in such a dangling way worth sacrificing our privacy and in the end, our freedom?

Introduction to the Future With 5G, AI, and IoT.
The Startup
December 09, 2020
AI, more precisely Machine Learning, and the IoT are part of the world we live in, and very soon, 5G will be so.
It is an important start to pay attention to them to ensure a competitive advantage. Currently, the use of these tools drives businesses to generate automated and more agile services. This consequently impacts the final consumer.
5G will give more power to cloud computing and AI and creates new business possibilities, connecting people in different places around the world as if they were face to face, without delay in communication.
A little bit of confusion between AI and. It exists today because it is challenging to apply Artificial Intelligence to everyday situations without the Internet of Things.
With the enormous amount of data generated by objects connected to the internet, the algorithms make the machines learn and work.
Likewise, the IoT needs Artificial Intelligence to analyze the data collected without a human performing this processing to give immediate and automatic results.
Now the 5G enters in this equation with an unforeseen potential for acceleration and disruption.

Thoughts About the Need for More Diversity and Inclusion in AI
The Startup
December 07, 2020
I’m black, and I am a foreigner living in Poland, a country that still has a long road to cover regarding diversity and inclusion of minorities and I’ve been very active in volunteering on a local ONG, designing and delivering workshops that help hundreds of teenagers better understand the value of tolerance and inclusion in our society.
I am also a father of three young girls. I’ve been very committed to encouraging girls and women in computing because I’m sure that diversity — not only of gender but racial and social — is fundamental to the area in which I work: Artificial Intelligence.
Because I believe that without the right amount of diversity, AI will not be able to reasonably contribute to solving the most relevant problems and deepen our world’s inequality, maybe you are asking yourself why it matters…
Well… let me tell you simply that AI is already impacting your life, every day, and everything you do… so probably you would prefer that these ubiquitous and almighty algorithms should be fair, ethical, and inclusive; just life should be, right? If you are still not convinced, I will try to give you something to think about…

Well, considering how things are developing today, probably not… Let me tell you why…

5 companies that are revolutionizing recruiting using Artificial Intelligence
Medium
November 14, 2020
The fact that AI is advancing and occupying more and more space in our daily lives is nothing new; it is present from the time our cell phone rings up in the morning to wake us up and permeates the rest of our day, whether at home, on the street, or at work.
The challenges faced by HR in the contemporary world require constant readaptations. The old management models will not be able to meet the demands that arise. For this reason, managers are increasingly talking about disruptive thinking.
One of the most significant advantages of AI is eliminating the factor “personal opinion of the recruiter” (or guesswork, guesswork, and prejudice) in hiring.
Another benefit is the ability to deal with many resumes objectively and efficiently. But not only that.
Virtual recruiters and advanced analytics tools come with a proposal for a safer and more transparent selection process, breaking the ties with inconsistent and laborious methods and moving forward to modern and digitalized HR Services

A gentle Introduction to Data Literacy
Medium
November 06, 2020
Gartner defines data literacy as “the ability to read, write and communicate data in context, including an understanding of data sources and constructs, analytical methods and techniques applied — and the ability to describe the use case, application and resulting value.”
Data literacy is a perfect analogy to a person’s literacy process in their mother tongue: it requires effort, repetition, reading, accompanying professionals in the field, interest … But, once this step is taken, the process flows. And when people are literate, they read, write, work, communicate, think, reason, and argue in that language. Data literacy works the same way.
As we can see, Data literacy is the idea that everyone should know how to make decisions with data to perform their function to the fullest.
It has a relevant impact on aspects of our business culture, stimulating the exchange of experiences and knowledge, the collaboration between peers, regardless of the area, and continuous learning.
Companies lose an average of more than five working days (43 hours) per employee per year due to stress-related data and technology. The only way to reduce this stress is with data education and awareness.
Data awareness as a second language is a necessity of the present, not just of the future. Are you and your company working to make it happen? Tell me about it in the comments!

Reinforcement Learning and 9 examples of what you can do with it.
Towards Data Science
October 23, 2020
Reinforcement Learning is a subset of machine learning. It enables an agent to learn through the consequences of actions in a specific environment. It can be used to teach a robot new tricks, for example.
Reinforcement learning is a behavioral learning model where the algorithm provides data analysis feedback, directing the user to the best result.
It differs from other forms of supervised learning because the sample data set does not train the machine. Instead, it learns by trial and error. Therefore, a series of right decisions would strengthen the method as it better solves the problem.
Reinforcement is done with rewards according to the decisions made; it is possible to learn continuously from interactions with the environment at all times. With each correct action, we will have positive rewards and penalties for incorrect decisions.
In the industry, this type of learning can help optimize processes, simulations, monitoring, maintenance, and the control of autonomous systems.

Summarizing A.I. Articles using A.I. (What else??)
Medium
June 10, 2020
I have started an experiment on automating the summarization of the dozen exciting articles about A.I., Machine Learning, and Data Science that I regularly read every week, using vectorization (Nltk) directly from the links to the news.
With the overwhelming amount of new text documents generated daily in different channels, such as news, social media, and tracking systems, automatic text summarization has become essential for me to keep pace and to digest and to understand so much content.
Text summarization aims to extract or generate concise and accurate summaries of a given text document while maintaining key information found within the original text document.
Automatic summarization reduces large text documents to a short set of words or a paragraph that conveys the meaning of the full text.
An excellent example of the Text Summarization problem is news article summarization, which attempts to produce an abstract from a given article automatically. It concisely represents the latest news as a summary.

Here is The Vatican’s plan for the development of ethical AI.
Medium
March 03, 2020
Pope Francis launched on last on 28 February 2020 the “Rome Call for AI Ethics” and IBM and Microsoft are among the first signatories.
The document proposed by the Vatican and signed by IBM and Microsoft for the ethical development of artificial intelligence is called “Rome Call for AI Ethics.”
The Pontifical Academy for Life, an institution that deals with the ethical and moral implications raised by the latest frontiers of science, such as stem cell research and genetic editing, promoted the document, recognizing that Artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing about considerable changes in the lives of humans and will continue to do so.
AI systems must be conceptualized and realized to assist and preserve human beings and the environment in which they live.
This initial vision must transmute into an engagement to create social and personal conditions that allow both groups and individual members to endeavor to represent themselves where possible thoroughly.
Given the innovative and complex nature of the issues posed by the digital transformation, it is essential that all stakeholders work together and that all the needs emerging from AI are represented.
Artificial intelligence is an incredibly promising technology that can help us make the world smarter, healthier, and more prosperous. Provided that, from the outset, it is developed according to human interests and values, and The Call for AI Ethics in Rome reminds us that we must think carefully about the needs of those who will benefit from AI and invest significantly in the necessary skills.

Does Google know more about you than your wife?
Medium
February 20, 2020
You might be amazed by how much Google knows about you. But is it a threat or is it part of the game?
As technology advances, the value of data will continue to increase, but also the number of interactions and opportunities that come with the utilization of this data.
We need to be more aware of the consequences of signing away the rights to our data and be more conscious about who we give it to.
As we saw here in this article, even though they collect a shocking amount of data about our lives in every moment, they seem to be very transparent regarding how this data has been collected, stored, and used.
But could we be so sure about how other companies are treating our data?
A complete opt-out seems to be too radical and would have a significant impact on our online experience today due to the ubiquity of Google. It looks like more of a too conservative approach than that hardly would prevent the giant search engine from exploiting our information.
So get used to the idea that Google will continue to know more and more about you as time goes on. If you have nothing to fear, you’re good! Is it right?

Pomodoro - one effective method to help you to work more efficiently.
Medium
February 18, 2020
The Pomodoro Method is a time management technique, initiated in the 1980s by the author, entrepreneur, and developer Francesco Cirillo.
The method is named after the tomato-shaped timer he used while attending university. The name “Pomodoro” is the Italian word for tomato.
The method consists of dividing the hours of work or study into shorter intervals: usually, 25 minutes are spent to work or study, followed by a short break of 5 minutes for rest. This allows the focus to be maintained for a longer time, decreasing attention deviations throughout the day.
This technique, when applied correctly, can increase focus and productivity. The results of its application show that the Pomodoro Method has been a profound discovery not only in the business world but also in education.
I have been researching a lot about new ways to improve my focus, to retain more information, as well as to increase my level of attention during work and my studies.

How to raise a multilingual child?

After all, the opportunities for technologies involving robotics and artificial intelligence have grown exponentially, and workers around the world have been anxious about how this new era of automation can affect their careers.
The concerns of shrinking jobs during the rise of robotic automation and AI it’s a real thing, and it can be contrasted with 3 main approaches:
The first is related to continuous learning, the second is associated with accessing and analyzing information in the right way and the third is linked to the importance of the unique human skills.
Let’s face it: to be prepared for the jobs of the future, we should be less concerned with choosing a secure job position and devoting ourselves more to the continuous learning of new skills.

Can you imagine a world full of cars that could drive themselves from point A to B, with no human intervention? Creating the opportunity to help people get around, not just those who can drive? I do, and I am not the only one...
I imagine a world where the transit system of our cities, will be purely made of a synced and efficient system of autonomous vehicles. With no more delays, or overcrowding. A system where one transit vehicle will know, based on interconnected sensors, the past, present and future locations of all other cars in the system.
I read somewhere that Rupert Stadler, CEO of Audi, said they would have fully autonomous cars deployed by 2025. Mark Fields, a former CEO of Ford, indicated 2021. And of course, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, said next year.
Having this due dates, it is hard not to get excited about self-driving cars, right?

Emotion Analysis as a key for an humanized Artificial Intelligence - A conversation with the neuroscientist Mariana Verzaro - Part 4

The average software scatters merely the photo, allows you to apply the usual filters and publish your new photo on your favorite social network, without considering the content of the picture. This approach develops little or no empathy between you and the software. If the same photo was taken by your best friend or friend, would it be the same? No comment? No observation? No questions about matching clothes colors or your expressions?
Now imagine if that application could use Artificial Intelligence to analyze the whole picture: the environment, the colors, the light, your clothes but above all examining your face, identifying your facial expression in order to identify if you are angry, sad or surprise with your new picture?
This relationship between you and the software could you to interact more emotionally with 'AI.

Are you afraid of Artificial Intelligence? - A conversation with the neuroscientist Mariana Verzaro - Part 3
LinkedIn
November 11, 2017
In my previous articles: Part 1: Introduction and Part 2: Are you Afraid of Artificial Intelligence?, I have shared a conversation I am having with Mariana Verzaro, doctoring in Neurosciences from University of Sāo Paulo about Empathy in Artificial Intelligence and so much more.
Previously we discussed how the relationship between man and machines is changing and how fears can come from this changes. In this third part, we will continue to talk about some common worries when facing Artificial Intelligence and share some about how to meet them in a real world.
For many of us, the early stages of artificial intelligence look promising and more positive. The technology developed so far has already proved that it is compelling and useful. However, there is a fear about artificial intelligence because the day it will match or surpass humans, things will probably go wrong.
Elon Musk also says that artificial intelligence is our “biggest existential threat.” He recently described his investments in AI research as “keeping an eye on what’s going on”, rather than viable return on capital. “With artificial we are summoning the demon. In all those stories where there’s the guy with the pentagram and the holy water". It seems that Elon Musk is pretty sure we can control the demon.
Mariana goes further on the topic: "I would not say extinction per se but a merge of human + machine, that´s already happening. The human brain we know is tough to replicate, for example, it´s the same thing as thinking about a brain transplant, have you ever thought about that? We can transplant all organs, but not the brain. The brain is the most complex machine in the universe. "

In my previous article, I have started to share a series of conversations I have been taking with Mariana Verzaro, doctoring in Neurosciences from University of Sāo Paulo about Artificial Intelligence and so much more.
Today, in the second part of this conversation we've started to discuss some primordial feelings joy, anger, sadness fear. And this last feeling caught my attention to open a deeper discussion with one initial questions: what is fear? How does it work our brain? and more important, how can we understand this feeling when talking about Artificial Intelligence?

I have been exploring the concept of Empathy in the world of technology, especially in Cognitive Computing (I am working on a personal project to teach my humanoid robot to be as more empathetic as possible using IBM Watson). During a series of long conversations (days of texting, unlimited WhatsApp's audio messages and hundreds of link exchanges) with my longtime friend, Mariana Verzaro, I started to write a series of articles where we will share our ideas and visions regarding empathy and how it can be applied to Cognitive Computing in general.

Using Analytics to understand the summer hit Despacito.

What is the hit of summer 2017? I’m pretty sure that from the “botecos” of Rio de Janeiro to the coolest discos of Barcelona and the indoor malls of Milano Despacito is the number one!
The remix of Luis Fonsi’s Latin crossover hit, featuring Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber, had scored for weeks the Billboard Hot 100. It’s also helped Daddy Yankee become the first Latin artist to be named Spotify’s top artist.
I’ve been analyzing Latin summer hits in the past. For most of them, the secret for the song’s success was evident for me: the slinky rhythm and the infectious and straightforward hooks delivered by an elementary to learn chorus added to a catchy and upbeat sound (much like a lot of Spanish music). Put everything together, shake it, and so it becomes widespread, for sure.
In my opinion, another critical factor in the success of those songs is actually the collaboration with Latin urban acts and the fusion of pop stars like Bieber and urban itself, for example: do you remember the hit by Lumedee and Busta Rhymes, I never gonna leave you?
Personally, I’m not a fan of #despacito. Still, I have to bring it down: my daughter loves this song, my girlfriend loves this song.. and recently I’ve been surrounded by this summer ear-worm.. so I could not ignore it.
