Friday’s Change Reflection Quote - Leadership of Change - Narcissistic And Entitled Leaders with Success Delusion

Dec

Happy Friday!

On this day, December 30, 2006, Saddam Hussein was hanged after being sentenced to death following his conviction of crimes against humanity by the Iraqi Special Tribunal. These crimes included the Dujail massacre in 1982 and the 1988 Halabja Catastrophe. 148 Iraqi Shi'ites were killed in the town of Dujail in retaliation for an assassination attempt against him. The Halabja attack has been officially defined as a genocidal massacre by the Supreme Iraqi Criminal Tribunal. Saddam used chemical weapons against a Kurdish town that dared to rise against him, killing an estimated 5,000 civilians. He was the president of Iraq from 1979 until his capture by a US-led coalition in 2003. His vicious rule was marked by costly and unsuccessful wars against neighbouring countries, which claimed many lives.

Saddam Hussein sent a message to the U.N. General Assembly, September 19, 2002. “I hereby declare before you that Iraq is clear of all nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons” and no weapons were ever found. In 2006, families of victims celebrated his death, while other Iraqis felt deeply saddened when they saw their ruthless leader walk towards the gallows. Many recognised experts have concluded he was a malignant narcissist, incapable of feeling remorse for the suffering of others. However, narcissistic leaders are not uncommon. They are present in normal work life, supported by the sheep that follow them. Narcissistic And Entitled Leaders with Success Delusion.

“Too often the change team will engage narcissistic and entitled leaders with success delusion, this look is obvious on their face when you enter their office. They think to themselves, ‘Who is this plebeian and dullard before me?’”

Narcissist leaders will put their needs above organisation change implementation. Narcissists are fundamentally driven by their own self-interest, they lack empathy and their arrogance, dominance and hostility soon show through. Their desire is to reach high goals and they may be able to influence or persuade others to follow their guidance in order to do so. This can lead to improvements in organisation performance but eventually the collateral damages outweigh the benefits. Narcissists will cause tremendous harm as they exploit employees, as their behaviour cascades through the organisation. These narcissistic and entitled leaders will quickly contaminate the organisation, belittling employees, overselling their own accomplishments, as well as promoting incompetence based on their likeness. They will leave behind a dysfunctional organisation, broken employees and ‘sheep’ mentality.

Have a fantastic holiday with the ones you love and care for, enjoy some fresh air, exercise, eat, drink and be happy.
