He started his presentation by saying that " 5G is more than a speed bump. It will transform our lives and usher in many new services. These new capabilities lead to growing levels of network complexity. Because so much of the success of 5G depends on the ability to deliver ultra reliable services, integrating analytics, machine learning and AI into every aspect of the 5G architecture is critical.

Hackers are more committed and willing to be patient far longer than you can ever imagine. This was from a presentation I gave in 2000. Now nearly two decades later there are probably 10,000 times the number of private, state-run and security agency hackers exploiting their skills for good or evil. Certainly not all of them are black hat, there is also a great rise in the number of white hat and grey hat hackers. Each one of them either protecting, attacking and involved in nearly every aspect of the IT industry. From a business perspective, there are too many prominent public corporate hack attacks to mention. More importantly are the thousands of daily attacks that are quietly covered up and go unreported. The cloud is also not something that is protected behind some super firewall that is unbreachable. It is just another place where hackers can work because anything connected to anything means that somewhere "in the middle" along the highway just like in cowboy days, the packet "stage coach" can get intercepted. As one certified professional in IT security said, "we are just kidding ourselves that this is a fade that will go away because of moving applications to the cloud." By my own research, hackers have only really attacked the "low hanging fruit" with many more serious high-level attacks to come. In other words, the easy TCP port attacks along with DDOS -distributed denial of service-, email aka ransomware, malware and other attack schemes are known and there is modest to good protection. However, when you think about SIP communications, SCADA, IoT, wearables, medical implants, specific proprietary device communications and other OS schemes that haven't been seriously attacked yet, you can see that multiple layers of protection for cloud security remain needed. Then, look not just at devices but at concepts to attack like HIPAA, SOX, GDPR and others which can be convoluted exposing specific types of data to hackers, there is serious opportunity for many other kinds of on-premise or cloud attacks. It's not that you will be attacked, you already are being attacked, you just don't know it and maybe your IT security staff and others are already at work trying to stop them.
Getting Serious Going Green Cloud - Part 2

In an earlier article, I wrote about green cloud and companies striving for a "net-zero" environmental impact coming from their operations. In other words, moving the company from black to green throughout their operations, suppliers, partners, subsidiaries, customers and other touch points. As nearly everyone points out no one cloud solution fits all companies, nor will there ever be one cloud for all applications. Add in internal development, APIs and more the idea of multi-cloud drives one to madness or mayhem or something else. No one organization can realistically deal with all the cloud tech including all the cloud APIs that exist. Moreover, these cloud providers are building clouds based on their own needs and strategy with little regard to what current customer or future needs will be. This comes from real-world applications development on both major cloud providers and specific clouds such as iOS and others. ..

Cloud, hybrid-cloud and multi-cloud is the loud buzzing in your head with multi-cloud driving the conversation. However, moving from an internally-focused strategy for IT to an externally-provided one is "not all-in the cards" in conversations with CIOs. Going Green in the Cloud - Net Zero Environmental & Business Impact
linkedin
July 25, 2019
In an increasing number of conversations with all levels of business and industries, a new concept is emerging - green cloud. Certainly, green IT is not new but "green cloud" is a rising topic on the CIO agenda. When pressed many CIOs could not explain what it is but seems to resonant with them as a new element in their business operations. What I asked CIOs and IT analysts during conversations about their plans and strategies for cloud, I often ended up in indepth discussions on whether the cloud should be green or not. There was nearly a universal response that moving from on-premise to cloud was not meant to be moving climate changing emissions from one place to another. It was for many the hope that the cloud providers they would using, considering and incorporating into their data IT infrastructure plans was greener than what they are doing now. One CIO said, "we are not trading one black cloud for another one, we expect a greener approach to any cloud provider we use." In other conversations green cloud was just one of the many new challenges for any future plans including understanding political impacts of a "green new deal." Another said, "if what we are doing is not hard enough, adding being green is another smackdown what we do, yet if we don't do it there will be hell to pay." Drilling deeper into conversations to what I was really looking for was, how fast were there plans to move from internal data centers to the cloud? The answers were as vague as with going green cloud. One can summarize some of the collective interviews like this. One CIO mentioned they have one ready-to-retire IT manager keeping a 30-year-old a legacy OSS system working. He said "if Fred retires, we are screwed, while we try to rebuild the OSS on a new cloud platform. He noted, there is "no migration code and no easy button because it takes a number of experts to extract data from the old system and develop use cases to rebuild just this one system, and we have more than 50 other older systems like this one." In other words, there is no one kind of migration strategy to move to the cloud except older systems are replaced..
Show Me the Money - The New Digital Model for Business & Sports Part 2
linkedin
June 17, 2019
In part 1 of an analysis of the Tata Communications Show Me the Money paper I explored how sports and business have many similar traits and how digital transformation is bring these often different concepts closer together. Now I will expand the analysis and explore as Tata points out, " Given the huge figures the global sports industry now commands, it is astounding to think that we are at the tipping point of the next big growth opportunity: the impact of digital technology innovations. New applications and platforms are tearing down the barriers which once existed for sports looking to grow their fan base and take their fan experience to the next level." Indeed, there are many management strategies to digital transformation, integration and foundations for future applications. One of the interesting points where future applications and sports meetup is in the area of artificial intelligence. Often what I find is that AI applications solve one problem but not others and the AI applications venue is not applicable to other areas. Humans are, though we really don't like change that much, very versatile. Humans can go from flying an airplane to driving a car, riding a bicycle and then climbing a mountain often effortlessly. Each of these are different but are alike in the sense that they are all physical and some are competitive sports. By integrating AI and digital transformation within sports, we can bring benefits to the often very competitive nature of many humans. For example, many humans love sports for the physical experience and in the case of esports for the mental engagement. Through digital applications, "sports can use digital to broaden their appeal, particularly when it comes to increasing interaction with younger audiences. It’s about acquiring and maintaining eyeballs.
Storm Clouds Ahead - Curious and Caution
linkedin
June 12, 2019
Clouds in the real world are nothing that airplanes fly into but avoid at all costs. Clouds in the business world are concepts that few really understand but business are flying into them seemingly without reservation. The reasons for cloud computing are compelling from service agility, OPEX/CAPEX reduction, business agility, business opportunity, security new business revenue, operational effectiveness, vendor lockdown or plethora of other issues. Ericsson issued a very insightful report on the cloud with progress charts on where companies are in their cloud journey. They reviewed where companies are in terms of what data they are putting on the cloud and what they are not. This leaves me to review a few of their findings and ideas on storm clouds ahead. One of the real takeaways is there is a reluctance to trust any cloud any time or anywhere. I would like to focus this short briefing on how cloud transformation is being deployed. First, Ericsson points out that companies have:
Crossing the Digital Divide in Digital Transformation
linkedin
May 05, 2019
The digital divide being of digital natives and digital immigrants also applies to digital transformation. Digital transformation, as often is the case with new technology, is having an even greater impact on new technologies like IoT, blockchain and even the hyped efforts in AI. However, much of the need for digital transformation is desperately needed in transforming the legacy systems and processes that have existed in some cases for many decades. Companies are built on cobbled-together systems and when a new need or problem is arises such as cybersecurity, they band aid the issue and go about their way. Years or even decades later they find that what was once an innovative solution is now an albatross hanging over them and have really don't know how to solve or what to do. The team who implemented the system(s) are long-gone and the technology while maybe current or patched with updates is rarely even close to solving the current set of problems of today much less for where the company wants to be next year or beyond. At the C-level, "CEOs should ask their teams more probing questions and not get carried away by the digital transformation hype. This reality check will help businesses make the most of the latest technology innovations to deliver new customer experiences and re-imagine how they operate,” noted Srinivasan CR, Chief Digital Officer, Tata Communications. Indeed, a reality check at all levels of the organization is a key stating point of where we are and where we need to go. Actually, the reality check should also be looking 1-3-5 years ahead because you aim where you want to go not where you are at now.
