Capital Markets and Economic Growth: The Case of Venezuela

Economic growth should be considered the primary goal of any country. Capital markets serve as a key mechanism for channeling resources from surplus agents to those in deficit, enabling investments that ultimately increase total production. This process functions as savings that act as a funding source for investments, making it a crucial factor for economic growth.

This study examines the relationship between capital markets and economic growth through the design of a multiple linear regression model. The analysis focuses on the most representative variables of the Caracas Stock Exchange (BVC): Caracas Stock Capitalization Index (IBC) Market capitalization (CB) Total amount traded in fixed income securities (RFT) relative to real non-oil GDP

After confirming this relationship, the model is adjusted using the error correction mechanism to determine the speed of convergence to equilibrium. Additionally, Granger causality tests are conducted to identify the statistical direction of the relationship and assess whether lagged stock market variables help predict non-oil GDP movements. Finally, a cointegration analysis is performed using vector autoregressive models (VAR) to estimate the long-term association between capital markets and economic growth.

Keywords: Capital markets, economic growth, stock exchange, market capitalization, stock capitalization index, fixed-income trading, real non-oil GDP, multiple regression model, error correction mechanism, causality, vector autoregressive model, Venezuelan economy.
