Among its many tough lessons, COVID-19 taught us to expect the unexpected. For organizations, that demands digital transformation. It’s the only way to ensure agility, speed, and responsiveness — all of which add up to business resiliency, no matter how adverse the situation. That can mean a sudden market disruption or opportunity, or it can mean your entire workforce going remote, seemingly overnight. In the darkest months of the pandemic, the most digitally mature organizations fared the best. Others struggled. But everyone is learning. In 2021, even companies with tight budgets will prioritize their infrastructures, security, and collaboration platforms. Today, there’s simply no other way to stay competitive.
Cybersecurity affects everyone. And while breaches of large enterprises make the headlines, small businesses and individuals often have the most to lose. In 2021, I see security and data-privacy strategies embracing a much wider swath of society. That will demand more diverse security teams to better understand a highly diverse user base. And it will require simpler, integrated, and highly automated security tools. Hackers, after all, are themselves diverse. And they don’t discriminate in choosing victims. For growth, innovation, and inclusion to increase across the planet, we must ensure that more and more people have access to effective, easy-to-use cyber defenses.
In a time of isolation, humanity got closer in 2020. Digital technologies made it possible. Seeing into our colleagues’ homes and sharing challenges around childcare, health, or loneliness brought greater empathy to our work lives. I expect this trend to continue in 2021. Work will shift to a hybrid model, with few of us returning to the office every day. And the best collaboration platforms will support a deeper level of interaction, inclusion, and work/life flexibility, from any corner of the world, securely, and through any crisis. In 2021, emerging technologies like AI will continue to enhance collaboration tools, further freeing us for what’s most important: creativity and human connection.
As the sheer volume of cyberattacks outpace the capacity of humans to respond, machine learning and AI will be essential to identify, isolate, and respond to the most sophisticated threats. Beyond the machine-to-machine arms race, however, human creativity, inventiveness, and collaboration will remain paramount — both to program the machines and to match wits with the cybercriminals.
Smart leaders will close the skills gap by cultivating talent from a much wider base. That means diversity in race, gender, culture, etc., but also from unlikely parts of the organization, like the business side. That expanded perspective supports a unified culture that’s security savvy from the board and CEO down — and willing to make the security investments essential to growth and competitiveness.
IoT is about way more than connecting “things”. In fact, it’s about people. And after years of hype, IoT is poised to fulfill its true promise: creating cleaner, safer cities, highly efficient factories and farms, agile enterprises, and more sustainable ecosystems. Especially as a confluence of emerging technologies edge closer to the near horizon. AI is becoming readily available in the cloud, sensors are cheap and reliable, blockchain’s promise is expanding, and next-gen network solutions — including 5G and WiFi 6 — will handle massive amounts of data, securely. By riding that wave of tech synergy, IoT will improve lives in ways we have barely begun to imagine.
