Tackling Motivation
GordonTredgold
August 30, 2022
“How can you motivate clerical staff who simply want to work 8 hours a day, get their paycheck, and go home – to do a better job” this was one of the topics I was asked to talk about.

To me, this is an interesting question because it assumes that people are not interested in being successful or feeling fulfilled in their job, which is not something I agree with.

What Environment do You Create for Your Teams?
GordonTredgold
August 18, 2022
I was considering the best boss I’ve ever had and what it was that I valued about them. I then questioned if I followed their approach and tried to cultivate the same environment for my teams.

This thought came to me after I had a discussion about one of my managers with his team.

He had a small team of 6 people, and when I was asking them how they were getting along with their boss, they said they didn’t have any private one-on-one meetings with him to share information, to get a better understanding of what was going on, or private coaching opportunities.

Creating an Empowered Organisation
GordonTredgold
August 17, 2022
An empowered organisation is one of the best legacies that we as leaders can create.

The fact that we have to give up part of our power in order to empower others is one of the difficulties with empowerment, which is why I believe some leaders avoid it.

To delegate that power to our teams: to allow them to make their own decisions; to take accountability for their success, and to let them become self-sufficient.

One of the best bosses I ever worked for was very strong in this area. He was the first person to teach me about self-sufficiency and empowerment, and it is something that has stayed with me, and that I look to pass on to my teams.

What Are The Essential Components Of Compliance?
GordonTredgold
August 10, 2022
To be compliant is to acquiesce to instructions as necessary. When it comes to running a business, this is a vital skill, because quite wisely many regulatory bodies have restricted how certain products or services can be made, sold, and used. While you may have your own opinions on how far-reaching regulation goes, or how little it helps, that doesn’t matter. What matters is following updated compliance measures to make sure that your business is legally capable of functioning.

Carving Your Way Into a New Career Path
GordonTredgold
July 21, 2022
Not everybody knows what they want to do from a young age. But we are still encouraged to select specialisms at school, make decisions about whether to go to university or not before the age of 18 and generally start off our path to a job relatively young. This is okay for some of us who have a passion or vocation. But when it comes down to it, many of us simply go with what we’re naturally good at and can end up in roles that we don’t find all too rewarding. If you’ve found yourself feeling disinterested in your job, dissatisfied or generally bored and being drawn to something else, it’s important to remember that you can always change your mind and change your path. Here are a few ways to go about this.

Why Understanding Pareto is So Important
GordonTredgold
July 15, 2021
One of the most important lessons I learned, one that has helped me really boost my performance, and also that of my teams in Pareto.

It’s such a simple concept and yet so powerful.

The Pareto Law, or the 80/20 Rule as it is also more commonly known, is the rule that says that 20 % of our effort delivers 80% of our output.

This means that it also costs us 80% of our effort to deliver the last 20%.

Now whilst for some things, like Moon landings, you need to have 100% delivered, in my experience for most things 80% is good enough.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that often the last 20% are the bells and whistles that are nice, but not really needed

3 Things Great Leaders Understand About Culture
LinkedIn
July 13, 2021
Peter Drucker knew the importance of culture, and he epitomized that in his "Culture eats strategy for breakfast" quote. I agree totally with this sentiment. If your culture is not aligned with your strategy, is at odds with it, then it's your culture that will triumph.

Culture is the habits and behaviors that your teams exhibit daily, so if you have a culture of caution and yet your strategy is to encourage risk-taking, then it's not going to happen.

But the importance of culture is much greater than being a way of helping to deliver your strategy. It has much deeper and longer-lasting implications than that. Here are three things that great leaders know about culture and why they spend time focusing on it.

Luckily there are other, better options available.

Go Big or Go Home
GordonTredgold
December 14, 2020
As a leader I’ve also always been a fan of the saying Go Big or Go Home. If you’re going to lead teams then you need to be bold, it’s not just about challenging the status quo, it’s about redefining what success looks like.

You might be thinking but why take the risk, why not just make some incremental improvements. If you aim too high and fail what then?

The answer to this is simple.

The Broken Rung in the Workplace Ladder
GordonTredgold
October 30, 2020
It’s easy to draw out the ladder metaphor for workplace advancement. The first rung is your entry-level position, the second rung is a manager position, the third rung is a senior-manager position, and rung by rung you climb to the top of your company.

There is a logical succession to upward mobility at a company. It makes sense that a ladder is a conceptualized picture of the American corporate pegging order– it’s a singularly-focused, rigorous trek. You get hired, work hard, get promoted, worker harder until you end up on the top. This, however, is idealistic and not the reality. The ladder logic is thrown out the window as this climb is disrupted early on by gender bias.

I did hope that as we moved forward with this approach that it would spread into other areas of work and help companies develop agile cultures.

5 Stages of The Leadership Journey
GordonTredgold.com
October 05, 2020
Great leadership is not something that just happens. People don’t just wake up one morning and go from not being a leader to being a great leader.

For most, leadership is a journey with clearly defined steps and stages, where you need to build knowledge, experience, and techniques to move to the next level and these take time and patience to develop.

Sadly just because you have mastered one level of leadership it doesn’t mean that you will succeed at the next as the skills required can be completely different to achieve success at the new level. There is a huge difference between leading a team of people and leading a team of leaders who are leading teams themselves.

Why A Recognition Mindset Is Key To Amazing Results
GordonTredgold
September 21, 2020
I am often surprised by companies, and sometimes HR departments, response to the subject of recognition. I even remember one senior HR director telling me I shouldn’t thank someone for just doing their job, they get paid to do that, and he added that recognition should be reserved for when they do something truly amazing.

I just cannot agree with this type of thinking, which is way more common than it should be.

It’s my strong belief that we pay people their salary to get them come to work and then it’s our job as leaders to inspire them and motivate them to do a great job.

And for me that motivation all starts with recognition and the beauty of recognition is that it costs us nothing, nothing at all, and yet the payback can be significant.

How To Grow Locally As A Virtual Business

Entrepreneurs are the first to know the importance of location. Picking the right location for your venture makes it a lot easier to reach out to your audience and build relationships with your customers. However, for small businesses, finding the best spot at the best price has always been one of the biggest hurdles to overcome. Indeed, while some landlords can give you a deal on cheap offices with convenient facilities, most small ventures focus on renting out spaces in creative places, such as a home office inside a home, for instance.
