Humanist Manufacturing | Thriving Communities | Better World

My work as an author includes "Humanist Manufacturing: A Humanitarian Approach to Excellence in High-Impact Plant Operations." The book introduces the Humanist Manufacturing framework encompassing what I see as the evolving elements of an exemplary manufacturing operation. I saw a need for a book that laid out a framework that could shape the unique requirements for completing a significant manufacturing operation transformation—one where manufacturing exists for a higher purpose benefiting all internal and external stakeholders.

I am active in thought leadership with weekly blog posts, where manufacturing plays a more substantial role as an integral element of a thriving community. My work explores opportunities to engage members of society who have yet to be considered employable generally. These individuals can be on the autism spectrum, handicapped, minorities, previously incarcerated, returning veterans, and women. The manufacturing industry has opportunities that can allow each citizen of the world to meet, at a minimum, their needs for just and healthy lives—one where manufacturing exists for a higher purpose far beyond making a profit for shareholders.

My consulting company provides consulting, coaching, training and reskilling, and fractional Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) support. The work uses a humanist manufacturing approach with equal emphasis on people, the planet, and profit. Manufacturing operations that successfully implement sustainability initiatives that do the right things from an environmental and social perspective are also more profitable.

I am also an associate professor of business at Mary Baldwin University. I blend my academic and industry backgrounds to redefine the role of manufacturing — to an industry that efficiently and effectively balances environmental, financial, and social success that leads to more inclusive and sustainable local economies for all community members.

I made the transition to higher education after 28 years of industry experience. My career included machine build and repair, machine design, manufacturing engineering, and plant and engineering management.

My highest level of education is a Doctorate of Business Administration degree from Lawrence Technological University (LTU). I also hold degrees in Master of Business Administration from Spring Arbor University, a Bachelor of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University, and an Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from LTU.

Effective Two-Way Nonjudgmental Communication
LinkedIn
September 07, 2023
A common theme for most organizations is the lack of efficient and effective two-way horizontal and vertical communication. The nature of our conversations should be appreciative, achieved by using an inquiry-based approach to generate information and statement-based affirmative interactions with the intent to add value. We only become better communicators if we first see the need and then work to improve this essential element of leadership.

Who Says Lasting Change Cannot Be a Reality
Emmanuel Strategic Sustainability

Leaders looking to accomplish significant organizational transformation must utilize an efficient and effective change management process. However, success in doing so requires understanding by leadership that this work should only occur after developing robust strategic and tactical plans. Only then will the desirable outcome of lasting change become the reality of a future state of excellence in high-impact operations.

If you put "humanist manufacturing" into a Google search, it comes up many times at the top of the first page of the search engine. How Implementing Lean Can Be Like Christmas
Linkedln
January 11, 2024
Preparing for Christmas, I looked at the parallels to launching a lean implementation at some companies. Joseph found no room at the inn, so the Christ child was born in a manger. Someone new to an organization at a lower level might suggest that the company adopt lean practices. The response is a cold shoulder from the executive team, so the approach is a grassroots attempt from an abandoned room in the back of the plant.

My experience is there is a significant difference between the initial expectation of projects and the outcomes. The automated baggage handling system installation had over 2,000 design changes, was 250% over budget, and was 16 months late, only to eventually be deemed a complete failure. It was likely a strategic planning initiative that made good sense. However, it probably lacked an ongoing proactive review of planned targets.

Business is an ongoing series of decisions. In some cases, it can be a definitive one, for example, to pursue a new line of business. Other times, it can be to delay deciding while gathering or collecting more data or to give it more time. Worse yet, it can be an arrogance that no one can compete with your company and become irrelevant as the marketplace moves forward such as Blackberry and Kodak. We shift from our conversation on the importance of active and dynamic leadership last week to an essential element of leadership work of policy development, also known as Hoshin Kanri.

My career began with nearly 30 years of manufacturing experience in machine repair and rebuild, process and design engineering, and plant management. Then, I transitioned to academia, which included 11 years of undergraduate and graduate teaching in residential, online, and hybrid offerings across a wide range of business disciplines. I spent five and a half years as a college dean. For a period of 17 months, I held the added responsibilities of chief online officer and outreach strategist. I also led the development of an MBA program built around the B Impact Assessment and the revision of an undergraduate business offering with eight emphasis areas of study. After a sabbatical in the first half of 2022, I have returned to a faculty role.

During both segments of my career, I have had significant experience in strategic planning and change management. I am a SOAR framework practitioner focusing on organizational strengths while seeking to understand the whole system by including the voices of the relevant stakeholders for strategic planning. I have also developed a change management approach based partly on Dr. John Kotter's work and a wide range of other practitioners’ work. Most of my work is also framed around practitioner and academic work on sustainability and the for-benefit sector.

Humanist Manufacturing | Joe Sprangel, Ph.D. | TEDxLenoxVillage

January 11, 2022
Humanist Manufacturing is a framework that incorporates ten humanist commitments to establish industry practices that enhance environmental and social well-being. Humanistic manufacturing is done with a concern for dignity, values, and human welfare, allowing each citizen of the world an opportunity to meet at a minimum their needs for just and healthy lives, with a full opportunity to achieve their highest potential. Joe Sprangel, Ph.D., is the Founder and Principal Consultant of Emmanuel Strategic Sustainability and Founding Dean of Business and Professional Studies at Mary Baldwin University. He was influenced by Ray Anderson’s vision of the business for a ‘noble purpose’ utilizing sustainability, and with the B-Corporation business model with for-profit companies having a positive social or environmental impact. As a consultant, Joe helps businesses increase profit, sustainability, and positive societal, environmental impacts, and also serves on the Steering Committee of the Sustainable Shenandoah Valley Consortium. In 2016, as Founding Dean, he designed the MBA to instill sustainability and the B-corporation model. Humanist Manufacturing Book Launch Event
YouTube
January 12, 2023
The video is of the book launch of "Humanist Manufacturing: A Humanitarian Approach to Excellence in High-Impact Plant Operations."

Dr. Jackie Stavros, the co-author of seven books, 25 chapters, and 50 articles, interviewed Dr. Joe Sprangel about the development of his Humanist Manufacturing title. The book is the culmination of knowledge gained through nearly 30 years of manufacturing experience and 15 years of academic work.

Humanist Manufacturing introduces a framework encompassing what Sprangel sees as the evolving elements of an exemplary manufacturing operation. He saw a need for a book that laid out a framework that could shape the unique requirements for completing a significant manufacturing operation transformation—one where manufacturing exists for a higher purpose benefiting all internal and external stakeholders. The result is an A-Z leadership guide for moving from the status quo to an environmentally and socially just organization that attracts and retains high-caliber and engaged employees, delights customers, and contributes to a thriving community and, collectively, a better world.

Award-winning author Jenny Lisk moderated the event.

In 2024, I predict that more companies will embrace sustainability for various reasons. First, our younger generations expect to work for companies with similar values, expecting their employers to drive positive environmental and societal impact. Second, organizations with a sustainability focus will enhance their brand reputation and customer loyalty. Third, businesses will generally see an improvement in their bottom line as they improve their operational efficiency. Embracing a triple bottom line is not only the right thing to do for society but also necessary for organizations' long-term success and resilience. Intelligent leaders increasingly understand they must adopt sustainable strategies to remain competitive.
