While successful businesses have always adapted, today's unprecedented pace of change renders periodic reinvention insufficient; constant sensing and adaptation are now essential for survival, demanding new organisational capabilities.
Studies show that technological advancement is accelerating exponentially: for instance, in 2018, IDC projected that the global datasphere would reach 175 zettabytes by 2025¹. According to Statista, the total amount of data created, captured, and consumed worldwide has increased. In 2010, the estimate was about 2 zettabytes; by 2028, global data creation is projected to exceed 394 zettabytes². Internet usage has surged from approximately 361 million users in 2000 to over 5.5 billion today³, and the number of IoT-connected devices was estimated to reach nearly 19 billion in 2024⁴.

The Business Case for Enterprise Architecture
Kaine Ugwu
March 31, 2025
In an era of constant transformation, having an intentional enterprise architecture (EA) practice is no longer optional. EA is a strategic capability that enables organisations to align business and IT, enhance agility, improve decision-making, and reduce waste¹. But for many, the question remains:
What is the business case for EA?
The answer requires clarity about EA, what it is not, and how it creates value. It also requires understanding the organisational context.

In 2008, Netflix made a pivotal architectural decision following a major database corruption that caused a three-day service outage. This incident exposed the limitations of its single data centre architecture and pushed the company to rethink its infrastructure strategy. Instead of attempting incremental improvements, Netflix transitioned to a cloud-native architecture to ensure resilience, scalability, and agility¹.

In the early 2000s, Starbucks faced a growing challenge. The company’s reputation as a premium coffee brand was intertwined with the quality of its beans. Yet, the global coffee supply chain was riddled with instability, fluctuating prices, environmental concerns, and ethical sourcing controversies. Consumers were becoming more conscious of sustainability, farmers were struggling to earn fair wages, and environmental groups were raising alarms about deforestation¹.

Leading Change as an Architect by Kaine Ugwu

Traditionally, architects decide on the architecture and conformance of solutions to enterprise architecture. Projects often start with a comprehensive architecture document, but project managers and leads rarely perform a transparent evaluation of the project’s value to the customer. This dynamic has shifted in the digital era. Most organizations now apply agile, and design thinking approaches in translating user requirements into working software. The focus in autonomous teams is often on the frequent delivery of working software to enable the business to adapt quickly to its environment.
