Linkedin
November 12, 2015
What is Corporate Culture? And How HR practitioners can influence it and build the right culture?
Culture is a set of behaviors, habits and ways of doing things during a period of management that is governed by Society, Regulation, and Style. Thus, in business world Corporate Culture can be simply defined as the way of doing business in an organization and how employees talk to each other. It is the personality of an organization. But, please remember that the corporate culture is not the vision, and mission statements, rather, it is expressed in the day-to-day practices, communications, and beliefs.

Recently, I was assisting my daughter, Farah, with her university’s homework to come up with an essay about synergy, and one of the questions that needed an answer was “If you are asked to add an eighth habit to the 7 habits of highly effective people that you think is important for most effective people, what is it and where are you going to position it among other seven habits?”

The Performance Crunch; Evaluating What Matters Most!
Linkedin
May 09, 2014
After more than two decades of development, evaluating people performance is still one of the most controversial topics within the field of HRM. Regardless of the training on managing performance evaluation, and the investment made in time and efforts to adopt a particular system, there are so many frustration and dissatisfaction with the results of it. Most people-employees and managers alike-dread the time of year when annual performance reviews are given. Such problem seems to be the same at all types of organizations.

What HR Can Learn From the Art of War; Sun Tzu
Linkedin
April 29, 2014
There is no doubt about that ancient stories are shading lights on different events and situations that happened in the past that are to a great extent similar to present day. Such history by far can teach us many lessons that we can put into practice in managing today complex organizations and its human capital. The history provides us with centuries of collective wisdom and experience to learn from, as it is said; “there is nothing new under the sun”. Learning lessons from history has been a phenomenal source for free advices and inspirations. Thus, those who fail to learn the lessons from history are condemned to repeat it, but most significant thing we learn from history is that we certainly not learn from it.

Around the world today, organizations of all sizes in all fields are striving to be the best in class, striving for excellence, adopting new management techniques and systems as well as striving for total quality. But, going through three different international reports; The Global Competitiveness, The Global Innovation Index, and The Global Optimism Index, there is no wonder that we can still see many of our current organizations have (1) floundered to progress, (2) being able to compete in the marketplace, and/or (3) struggle to survive. One of the main reasons for such failure is simply due to narrow minded and underestimation of the importance of training role and investment in people.

“No matter how scientific”, “No matter even how many insights it produces”, an appraisal that focuses on “Potential”, Personality” on “Promise”-on anything that is not proven and provable performance-is an abuse” - Peter Drucker
I’m remembering my first evaluation session back in early eighties, when my boss was seating behind his desk smiling, unlike his aggressive mode, and I took a chair opposite from him. I was wondering what I’m doing in his office. I then noticed that he had a piece of paper in front of him, but I could not determine what it was. All of the sudden he said “every employee receives an annual evaluation and today it’s your day, so please take the form and sign it, I have mark it all out, and if you would like you can add your comments.” He then leaned back and waited for me to sign the form, I felt somehow deceived as he didn’t discuss anything, and he just added my comments, and it took less than fifteen minutes to conclude the evaluation session.

The Naked Truth about HR
HR Future Magazine, South Africa
January 07, 2012
In recent years a lot of debate and controversial discussions have veered towards the need for HR to gain a seat at the board level and to be involved in the strategic planning process or in drawing up the future of the organization. Furthermore, HR practitioners collectively lament the feeling that they are not taken seriously, not invited to engage in their organization's strategic discussions, and not paid adequately. With the current business climate, it is not sufficient for HR practitioners to focus on just one area; they have to perform various activities effectively and efficiently to contribute to the long term success of their organizations.
