My dad’s preventable death inspired me to build better. Now I help founders scale ethical, design-led HealthTech globally, unlocking new markets & millions in revenue. | 4x Founder (VC-backed & Bootstrapped) at Well Purposed

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Sara Roberts is a seasoned entrepreneur, strategist, and thought leader with over 15 years’ experience building and scaling ventures at the intersection of health technology, ethical wellbeing, and innovation. A three-time founder, she has led both bootstrapped and venture-backed businesses across the UK, Africa, and the United States, consistently championing people- and planet-first approaches to growth.

Sara’s work centres on making healthcare more human, preventative, and inclusive. Following the loss of her father to a preventable illness, she became a vocal advocate for reshaping healthcare systems to prioritise long-term wellbeing and equity. Her professional expertise spans digital health, consumer behaviour change, regulatory strategy, and operational scale, particularly for Series A+ companies navigating complex markets.

She is the founder of Well Purposed, an advisory studio that partners with mission-driven HealthTech and FoodTech leaders to scale ethically and profitably. Through this work, she supports post-raise founders in unlocking new markets, forging high-value partnerships, and driving measurable impact—often resulting in 2–3x revenue growth.

Sara contributes actively to the global wellbeing ecosystem as a longstanding member of the WELL Nourishment Advisory at the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), where she informs research and policy on nutrition and health-enabling environments. She has been recognised among the Top 50 Global Thought Leaders in Health & Wellness (Thinkers360), Top 10 in HealthTech, and Top 20 HealthTech Experts in the UK (Favikon).

Her work is informed by a deep commitment to ethical entrepreneurship, the responsible use of AI in healthcare, and inclusive innovation that serves diverse communities. Sara regularly advises founders, venture funds, and policy-makers on health equity, longevity science, and the future of preventative care.

Entrepreneurship

I’m Sara Roberts, an award-winning, 3x founder and VC-backed entrepreneur with a proven track record of scaling businesses from inception to £10m ARR. I’ve worked across three verticals - Health/Wellbeing, Insights-as-a-Service (IaaS), and Innovation, and three continents: Europe, Africa, and the US.

We’re living in a world that’s changing faster than we realise, and it’s on us—the entrepreneurs, the dreamers, the doers and innovators—to step up.

If you’re ready to build a business that matters—one that leaves a legacy of positive change—let’s connect.

Whether it is sharing my journey, exploring the cultural differences working across different continents or sectors, or creating an impact led business, I have spoken on all aspects.

Some interesting facts:
- I left school at 13 due to severe bullying
- I am a serial founder
- I am a female founder that has raised investment (less than 2% of female entrepreneurs receive funding)

Health & Wellbeing

Did you know that 72% of entrepreneurs face mental health challenges?

That’s compared to just 48% of non-entrepreneurs. You’re walking a unique path, and it’s okay to admit that it’s tough. You don’t have to stay stuck though.

Small, intentional changes can make a world of difference.

Let me share what’s worked for me—not as a guru or an expert, but as someone who’s been in your shoes.

Longevity

We’re living longer and healthier lives.

This century alone, we’ve added 30 healthy years to life expectancy! But with this incredible achievement comes new challenges to navigate, especially in the workplace. To address these challenges, business leaders need to take proactive steps:

Promote Age Diversity:
- Ensure more experienced and mature employees have equal opportunities for advancement and are not discriminated against.
- Implement Flexible Work Arrangements: Offer part-time work, remote work, and phased retirement options to retain experienced employees.
- Invest in Lifelong Learning: Support lifelong learning for all employees to keep them relevant and engaged.
- Develop Succession Plans: Create comprehensive succession plans to capture and transfer knowledge.
- Foster an Inclusive Culture: Cultivate a workplace culture that values and respects employees of all ages.

The longevity challenge presents a wealth of opportunities for all. By embracing the contributions of older employees, businesses can tap into a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Building workplaces that are inclusive, diverse, and capable of harnessing the full potential of all employees, regardless of age, ensures we build a future where experience is valued, knowledge is preserved, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Women's Enterprise Scotland
Women's Enterprise Scotland
November 01, 2017
Women’s Enterprise Scotland works to create an entrepreneurial environment where women-led businesses can flourish and grow.

Because more women-owned businesses in Scotland means more money for the economy. The stats speak for themselves. If the numbers of women-led businesses increased to equal those of men, our national bank balance would be at least 5% better off. That’s equivalent to a £7.6 billion boost to the economy, minimum.

To make the most of this opportunity for economic growth, and to improve the gender gap in Scottish entrepreneurial activity, Women’s Enterprise Scotland aims for nothing less than the creation of a new norm for women in business.

To do that, we at WES inspire and support women to start their own businesses, and grow them too. We advise and educate external partners, and advocate for gender-specific enterprise support. We seek to influence policy-makers and movers and shakers to recognise the economic contribution women-led business could make. And we champion women’s enterprise in the media, in Scottish society, and across the wider world.

Alongside our partners, Women’s Enterprise Scotland aims to create a commercial culture where women-led business ownership is not simply an aspiration, but becomes a truly attainable, attractive and achievable option for women everywhere.

Govt eases HFSS ad concerns
LinkedIn News
April 09, 2025
The UK government has confirmed that advertising highlighting brand messaging will be exempt from the upcoming HFSS (high fat, salt, sugar) ad ban, provided it doesn’t feature identifiable unhealthy products. The move follows retailer concerns over potential impacts on Christmas campaigns. Health minister Ashley Dalton encouraged brands to focus on non-product elements such as corporate values or customer experience. She added that enforcement will ultimately be up to regulators, giving brands some flexibility in how the rules are interpreted.

You can be vulnerable. Or you can be funded. But you can’t be both.
That’s the message I hear too many FemTech founders facing - even in 2025.

Investors want “relatable” stories.
Marketing teams want “personal” content.
But when women founders share their medical journeys behind their startups, they’re suddenly labelled too close to the problem.

The word “impact” gets thrown around so much it’s beginning to lose its shape. Brands talk about impact. Startups pitch it. Investors demand it. But too often, it is nothing more than a buzzword, a sticker on the side of businesses that were built to scale, not to serve.

Impact is the brief.

Why Wellness Will Define Tomorrow’s Business Leaders
Well Purposed
May 15, 2025
The next generation of founders won't just hustle.
They'll focus on their wellbeing - and lead with clarity.
After 15+ years building and backing health ventures, I’ve learned this the hard way:

Tired brains make expensive decisions.
???? Your nervous system is leadership infrastructure.
Reflection isn’t fluffy, it’s financially strategic.

We can’t lead well if we’re not well. Does this resonate?

I believe that the founders who go the distance (and often repeat) are the ones who pause, question, recalibrate and look after themselves.

And yes - I firmly believe investors should be paying attention too!

Over the next three months, I’ll be sharing a six-part series delving into the life of a founder. This isn’t about glorifying hustle culture, celebrating awards, or sharing secrets to raising tens of millions. Instead, it’s about the real, often unspoken questions and considerations I’ve encountered while building three companies across two continents—as both a product and service innovator.

The 3 C's of Leadership - Clarity, Confidence and Contemplation
LinkedIn
November 01, 2024
My time away paved the way for prolonged reflection on my journey, wisdom and insights from mentors and experts, and the ever-increasing challenges of leading a business. I returned with determination in my gut to not simply share generic content, but to share my lived experiences of leading businesses and working with clients. Lessons, experiences, and considerations, with the aim of providing helpful, real-world insights that can be applied.

It's World Entrepreneurs Day on 21st August.

Entrepreneurs - Just because we CAN build something, doesn't mean we SHOULD.
Well Purposed
August 01, 2024
Entrepreneurs and innovators wield the power to shape our future.

Yet with great power comes great responsibility.

Allow me to introduce the startup Friend.

Friend is a $99 AI-powered, always listening necklace designed to combat loneliness. An AI wearable designed to be the wearer's friend (but mostly an AI chatbot that lives inside the pendant). It always has an opinion to share about what’s going on around it, which it communicates using text messages and push notifications on the phone it’s paired to.

It exemplifies the peril and dangers of AI.

Imposter Syndrome - It's Time to Say Goodbye
Well Purposed
July 15, 2024
Entrepreneurship is fraught with challenges - YOU should not be one of them!

I understand, I have been there.

Pitching, leading a business, navigating highs and lows, and making hard choices. But then you realise that your biggest limiting factor is YOU, in the form of the self-doubting, “I'm-a-fraud” thought habits we call Imposter Syndrome.

Embracing the Longevity Challenge: A Call to Action for Entrepreneurs (And All Workplaces).
Well Purposed
July 01, 2024
We’re living longer and healthier lives.

This century alone, we’ve added 30 healthy years to life expectancy!

But with this incredible achievement comes new challenges to navigate, especially in the workplace.

Pension Funding Gap: With people living longer, pension systems are under strain. Spending on pensioners is forecast to surpass £170bn in less than four years, making it the second most expensive public spending item after the NHS.

Knowledge Gaps: Without proper succession planning, larger organisations risk losing critical knowledge when more experienced employees retire.

Navigating the new 'life stage': For the first time, a new 'life stage' has emerged driven by increased longevity. The 'third quarter' career is a place of excitement, energy, and confidence.

Healthy Nibbles
Healthy Nibbles
June 05, 2014
Healthy Nibbles is an impact-led company creating the future of food retail and wellbeing innovation as a health-focused foodservice company & insights platform reaching over 244m consumers annually. Healthy Nibbles has been awarded BCorp accreditation and Queen's Award for Sustainable Development, building an impressive client base including Transport for London, Vitality, Spotify, Three Mobile, and The Office Group.

Healthy Nibbles was conceptualised out of frustration. I was at my father's hospital bedside. Hungry at 3am, the only food I could find was in a vending machine serving the usual selection of crisps, chocolate bars and fizzy drinks. Right next to the machine a poster warned ‘diabetes and obesity kill’. And so the crumbs of an idea became the UK’s award winning answer to healthy-snacking.

The top 3 problems we solve:
• Consumer Health: People are time-poor, under pressure and unhealthy. Whilst the desire for sustainable healthy food is there and growing, accessing it at the right time, location and price is problematic. Healthy Nibbles are changing the narrative.

• Food Sustainability: 40% of food waste comes from business environments with consumers actively seeking sustainable product. Our autonomous retail / IaaS solutions solve this.

• Dynamic Insights: Retail reports are expensive, agency reports are arm’s length. Healthy Nibbles deliver real time, dynamic insights to support product innovation, consumption patterns, optimal brand engagement and advertising times/days.

Key Achievements:
• Business Growth: From MVP to £10m run rate, leading C-Suite client acquisition and engagement.

• Sustainability & Impact: Developed processes and systems building a transparent & sustainable business model.

• Health & Well-being: Conceptualised thoughtful and intentional client spaces that enhance human health and well-being.
