September 21, 2020
Access to education, healthcare, clean water, and economic development opportunities remain key priorities for many countries. Entire populations and children are being left behind and marginalized through climate change, disruptions, and globalization. Addressing generational poverty and transformation can take decades. How might we learn from current success stories, work that can scale to other parts of the world in sustainable development? Great ideas and innovation are everywhere, but often access to funding, relationships, and networks present hurdles particularly for young, underrepresented (often female, black, and non-binary) people. How can we access to funding so great ideas can thrive?

Optimizing Human Consciousness To Consume Responsibly

January 05, 2020
As stated by Adam Smith, economist and moral philosopher in his book Wealth of Nations (1776, p. 329), “consumption is the sole end and purpose of all production and the welfare of the producer ought to be attended to, only so far as it may be necessary for promoting that of the consumer.” There are two simple reasons that explain the current state importance of consumers in economics and industry: 1) final consumption is the ultimate purpose of all economic activity and 2) production and distribution exist solely to increase the well-being of consumers.

The rate of mass-consumption, increased population, and dynamics of social-cultural changes where humans are living in the moment cannot be sustained on its current path. The availability of natural resources are declining at alarming rates due to low consensus world views, lack of accountability in industrial systems for CO2 emissions, and hyperbolic discounting. Most would agree that something must be done, but many (including environmentalists) disagree with the approach and which preventative measures should be prioritized in order to limit environmental damage.

Many consumers have no idea how purchase decisions impact the environment. In the words of James Thurber, celebrated journalist for the New Yorker magazine, “Man has gone long enough, or even too long, without being man enough to face the simple truth that the trouble with man is man”. Annually, the world generates 1.3 billion tons of solid waste and this is expected to almost double by 2025 due to a growing middle-class population and a mass-consumption mindset powered by consumerism (Esposito, 2016). In the United States alone, the average person throws away their weight in trash every month, resulting in 600 times one’s body weight or 90,000 pounds of trash at the end of one’s lifetime (Environmental Protection Agency, 2019).

Unearthing Opportunity in the Linear Approach Toward Clothing
linkedin
April 29, 2018
This analysis examines the interconnectivity between human behavior, industrial elements, and natural elements across the linear processes in the textile and clothing system. Using a systems-level perspective, it shows how biological and technical resources are wasted in material extraction and harvesting, the production of goods, and consumption or use by humans. The analysis of waste focuses on the material flows of non-energy related materials. The impact to natural systems and energy-related materials is not emphasized.

Is Circular Progress in Fashion Moving Forward or Further Away?
linkedin
April 08, 2018
The fashion industry fuels a linear economy with waste greater than $460B of value each year through unsustainable disposal of clothing (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017). Characterized as one of the most polluting and wasteful industries, it consumes 98 million tonnes in non-renewable resources, 93 billion cubic metres of water, and 53 metric tons of fibre to produce clothes used for a short time, after which 13% of the total material input is recycled and 73% of the materials are sent to a grave via landfill or incineration (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017). One estimate suggests that as global population grows to 16% by 2030, the mass-consumption of clothing will grow 65% as 3 billion people move into the middle class (Rosa, 2016).

Exploring Digital Distribution & Additive Manufacturing, Industrial Sustainability, and the Future of Decentralized Supply Chains w/ Espen Sivertsen of Ivaldi (SAP.iO)
Apple Podcasts
October 19, 2020
The purpose of a supply chain is to move goods and services around the world to meet user demand. And over decades, we’ve built coupled-networks based on principles of regionalization or centralization of function, location, and cost efficiency. COVID is an example of the uncertainty supply chains face on a day-to-day basis derived from old-school thinking and design.

Imagine a world where supply chains are flipped upside down, a world where we send files, not parts? A world that empowers the end consumer to produce what is needed on-demand through cloud based technology, including recycling on site in a circular transition?

In Episode 41, CEO of Ivaldi (Espen Sivertsen) joins Sheri Hinish to talk about the future of digital supply chains, on-demand additive manufacturing and the business case for change, industrial sustainability, and the power of diversity in technology. Espen is part of the SAP.iO Foundry bootcamp and shares observations he’s gathered from Silicon Valley and beyond, that diversity fuels innovation. Segments Ivaldi serves include maritime, industrial, mining, energy (gas turbines and power plants), and automotive.

October 12, 2020
Did you know that if you add up the cats and dogs in the United States, they’d represent the 5th largest population of protein consumption in the world? This one sector, encompasses dozens of other industries that have many categories in human supply chains. For example, apparel, food, medicine, and healthy/beauty are considered dramatically different industries in the human world, but we buy good and services for our pets in all those areas and more

How does one navigate discrimination and is there more awareness in corporate America around racism and breaking systemic barriers, including how to engage HBCUs and communities who have talent, but may lack access? How do we make diversity and inclusion REAL? Is it just lip service and social washing? Episode 35 - Exploring Shiny Object Fatigue in Supply Chain Technology, Defining the Value Prop in Tech, and New School Leadership in Digital
Acast
August 31, 2020
Let’s face it. Despite what many technologists think, most supply chains are not run on laptops. We know the promise that advanced supply chain technology holds…agility, velocity, scale, resilience, transparency, and better customer experience. Yet, when I talk to supply chain leaders, many have shiny object fatigue. Have we failed supply chain leaders and professionals by not adding tangible value for impact? Digital transformation isn’t just a thing that you can you can buy and plug into an organization or a switch you flip. It’s complicated and doesn’t just involve technology. Digital transformation is an ongoing process of changing the way you do business. It requires foundational investments in skills, projects, infrastructure, and, often, in cleaning up IT systems. It requires mixing people, machines, and business processes, with all of the messiness that entails

2 Trends
Multi-Enterprise Business Networks

Date : October 12, 2020

The tension between responsiveness and responsibly consuming is always front of mind for me, and how brands and tech vendors are able to bridge this value-action gap. As the world continues to navigate COVID, I think the biggest trend will center around digital supply networks and nuances of ecosystem sensing, simply put smart, reliable sourcing intelligence and figuring out with a strong degree of accuracy where your stuff is in an e2e environment. Multi-enterprise business networks that use single information models and convey one source of the truth will shape 2021 and beyond. Now, if you ask me about beyond 2021, my answer would be all things sustainability, but this requires a longer purview, long term commitments, and investment.
