What should worry utility industry executives most in 2020s and how to be unfazed if you are one?
Linkedin
January 15, 2020
The utility company of the 2020s is a consumer centric, tech savvy, highly personal, brand-led platform for a variety of energy-oriented services to be provided to a set of consumers, with possibly many extraneous arms. If you are a large utility company today and wish to make it through to the 2030s unscathed, the only way you can do so is if you aim aggressively to create 3-5 new unicorns in the next 7-8 years using the F-A-S-T framework while building your future strategy. Read my take on what is next in the energy industry over this decade and more,

Battery Energy Storage: The next frontier for renewable energy investors
Linkedin
December 02, 2018
Renewable energy, primarily led by the stupendous growth of solar PV with cost drops of almost 80% over the last decade alone, has given fossil fuel based generation a run for its money. As it continued defining new benchmarks in clean energy power purchase costs, renewable energy has silently found an ally in a electrochemical energy storage technology that mankind has now known for centuries (batteries) which might aid wider clean energy penetration on the grid in years to come. Enter 2018: Battery energy storage as a sector has come alive thanks to a steep decline in costs (BNEF puts it at 79% cost drop since 2010), allowing a wide range of budding entrepreneurs, funds, investment platforms, utilities and governments to try and figure out how they can get a piece of action in what appears to be a new frontier for the energy industry.

In this article, I share some thoughts on three key areas of concern for investors, basis my observations as a speaker at the recently held Infrastructure Investor Hong Kong Summit Renewable Energy Forum, which clearly showed there was sufficient interest within the larger group of infra investors to take formidable positions within the growing battery energy storage (BESS) space.

Africa’s ‘largest’ battery storage project: Sterling and Wilson’s take
Energy Storage News, Solarmedia
May 31, 2018
Close on heels of its recent announcement on forming a new global unit focused on the hybrid and energy storage market, Indian engineering and construction multinational Sterling and Wilson, a major solar EPC, has won a captive solar-diesel-storage microgrid project in Africa, comprising of what is believed to be the single largest battery in the region to date. The project, won against stiff European EPC competition, includes around 30MWh of batteries spread across three sites with a single battery installation of 17MWh. The sites, located at an educational institution in Western Africa, are scheduled to start operations early next year.

Sterling and Wilson on its turn to decentralised power and energy storage
Energy Storage News, Solarmedia
April 18, 2018
The global energy storage and hybrid power space has witnessed plenty of action over the past year, with remote power specialist companies acquiring energy storage technologies and lithium-ion batteries continuing on their downward price trajectory. This has made more electrochemical energy storage installations possible globally in the last year than ever before. The latest entrant into this space is Sterling and Wilson, an Indian multinational engaged in engineering, construction, manufacturing and energy services, which recently announced its foray into hybrid power plants and energy storage solutions.

Energy-Storage.News caught up with Vish Iyer, global head of business development, strategy and marketing for the Hybrid and Energy Storage division at Sterling and Wilson, to find out more.

It’s time for floatovoltaics
The Hindu Businessline
January 20, 2018
Floating solar plants should be looked at seriously, writes M Ramesh

As Vish Iyer, who heads Solar Business Development at Sterling & Wilson, notes, there exists not much data to arrive at an estimate of large-scale floating solar plants. Yet the industry is not so worried about the costs — it seems convinced that scale effect and on-the-hoof innovation will take care of the additional costs of the floating systems. As a thumb rule, the avoided cost of land offsets the impact of floating systems; only installation, maintenance and transmission will cost more.
