In 1977, Jack Gibson created what is now the Systems and Information Engineering Department at the University of Virginia. His vision and wisdom was captured in a collection of class notes that, after his death and with the permission of his wife and son, were printed and spiral-bound into a book that was used to introduce systems engineering students to the core concepts in systems analysis. In 2007, Bill Scherer, one of Jack Gibson’s colleagues, along with Jack Gibson’s son, Will Gibson, updated and expanded these “notes” into the volume that many of you own and value, “How to Do Systems Analysis,” which has served as the primary text for undergraduate and graduate courses in systems analysis at UVA and other institutions. In 2016, Mike Smith, who taught the undergraduate “Systems Engineering Concepts” course for twelve years using the book, joined Bill and Will to write another update of Jack Gibson’s original contribution, this time adding new material that includes many of the case studies that Bill and Mike have used in undergraduate and graduate courses along with insights and cases Will contributed based on his extensive consulting career.

In August 2016, John Wiley & Sons will be publishing the newest edition of How to Do Systems Analysis: Primer and Casebook. Since 2007, a number of graduate business schools and universities have used the original text, How to Do Systems Analysis. The demand for an update provided my colleagues and me an opportunity to enhance the text, provide more up-to-date cases, and expand on our original concepts of how to apply systems thinking to address critical problems.
