AI In Color: Examining Educational Technology Through a BIPOC Lens
AI, Personalization, Equity, and the Future of Learning
January 01, 2026
This chapter explores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to advance educational equity specifically for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) learners, who have historically navigated systemic barriers within traditional education systems. Arguing that AI offers a unique opportunity to disrupt entrenched inequities, we examine its capacity to foster just and inclusive learning environments. The chapter delves into how AI-driven personalized learning platforms can cater to individual needs, how AI tools can identify and mitigate bias, and how targeted AI interventions can provide crucial support to help BIPOC students thrive. While showcasing examples of AI tools designed to promote equity, we also engage with the significant ethical considerations, including data privacy and algorithmic bias, emphasizing the necessity of responsible implementation. Ultimately, this chapter provides educators, policymakers, and researchers with a nuanced perspective on harnessing AI's potential to contribute to a more equitable educational landscape for all.
