St. Gallen Wings of Excellence Award Winner — Global Essay Competition
St. Gallen Symposium
March 06, 2026
Won the St. Gallen Wings of Excellence Award — the premier global graduate student essay competition hosted by the St. Gallen Symposium in Switzerland — for original research on hate speech codes and the applied political philosophy of free expression. Out of approximately 1,000 annual contributions submitted by graduate and post-graduate students from around the globe, the jury selects three winner essays per year; prize money totals CHF 20,000 split among winners, and top essayists are invited to participate in the Symposium alongside 600 senior leaders and globally recognized speakers. The jury consists of leading executives, journalists, and professors worldwide — making this award international peer validation of original policy scholarship at the doctoral level. Research here formed part of the intellectual architecture underlying subsequent work in constitutional law, I&D strategy, and the limits of protected speech.

Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society
FRGS
March 05, 2026
Elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS) in 2026 — one of the world's most prestigious learned societies and professional bodies, founded in 1830 for the advancement of geographical sciences and holder of Royal Charter. The RGS counts among its historic fellows David Livingstone, Ernest Shackleton, Charles Darwin, and Neil Armstrong. The Society has 16,000 members globally, with its work spanning academic research, conservation, public education, and international exploration. Fellowship requires demonstrated evidence of a body of relevant work at the intersection of geography and allied expertise — with application supported by two existing Fellows and reviewed by the Society's Council. Fellowship in the context of this practice reflects the global education equity mission: research and work spanning New Orleans, London, New Haven, Taipei, the Gulf, and Southeast Asia constitutes applied human geography — the study of how people, institutions, and power structures shape access to educational and economic opportunity across places and populations. Fellows are entitled to use the FRGS post-nominal designation.

America's Greatest Thinker — Great American Think-Off Champion (2018)
Cultural Center
February 01, 2018
Named America's Greatest Thinker at the 2018 Great American Think-Off in New York Mills, Minnesota — the nation's premier annual public philosophy debate. Won the 2018 competition among four finalists selected from national applicants, defending the proposition that failure plays a larger role in shaping one's life, with the audience voting to award the gold medal and the title of America's Greatest Thinker following three rounds of live philosophical debate. The event was moderated by an Obama Foundation Fellow. Described the Think-Off as "a very unique opportunity — there are few if any opportunities for adults to debate and discuss relevant and controversial topics outside of gotcha politics and sound bites." This distinction validates the practitioner-level application of political philosophy and public argumentation skills that form the intellectual foundation of both academic coaching and executive communication programs.

National Academies
March 01, 2004

Ford Foundation Finalist selection recognizes superior academic achievement and commitment to teaching and research at the university level — a national validation of doctoral potential at Yale, where research focused on political theory, constitutional law, and the philosophy of marginalized communities. This recognition came in the same year as the Harvard Kennedy School Galbraith Social Policy Fellowship, further confirming dual-track excellence across both academic achievement and policy impact.

Boothe Prize Winner — Best Undergraduate Term Paper, Stanford University
Stanford Undergrad
March 01, 2001
Named Boothe Prize winner by Stanford University for the best undergraduate term paper — one first-place winner per quarter selected by Stanford faculty through the Program in Writing and Rhetoric. The award-winning paper, "Correcting the Black-Gay Distinction in Current Interpretations of the Equal Protection Clause," addressed the constitutional and political philosophy of anti-discrimination law at the intersection of race and sexual orientation — foundational scholarship in the emerging field of intersectionality as applied to constitutional doctrine. The Boothe Prize is Stanford's most prestigious undergraduate writing recognition; winners are published and archived permanently in the Stanford PWR annual volume (Stanford University Press, 2001). This work directly informed the Coca-Cola World Fellowship for London anti-discrimination law research, the Yale PhD research program in political theory, and the GLG Inclusion & Diversity global learning strategy deployed at the VP level.

Gates Millennium Scholar — Finalist (2000)
Gates Millennium Scholars
March 06, 2000
Selected as a Gates Millennium Scholar Finalist for undergraduate studies in 2000 — one of the most competitive merit-based scholarships in the United States, funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The program selects approximately 1,000 scholars out of over 50,000 applicants annually, making finalist status a significant national academic distinction. Recognition came in the inaugural cohort year of the program, as a first-generation student from New Orleans' 9th Ward competing without the private college counseling infrastructure available to most nationally recognized applicants. This recognition was one of multiple simultaneous national scholarship finalist designations in 2000, establishing an early record of academic distinction that would continue through Yale, Stanford, and four additional fellowship programs.

Semi-finalist selection as a first-generation student from New Orleans' 9th Ward, without private counseling support, in the program's inaugural year represents national peer recognition of academic excellence and leadership potential. This recognition came simultaneously with multiple other national scholarship distinctions in 2000, forming part of a credential record that led to eventual admission to both Stanford and Yale.

Duke University Scholars Program — Top 7 Applicants Institution-Wide
Duke University Scholars
February 01, 2000
Selected for the Duke University Scholars Program in 2000 as one of the top seven undergraduate applicants institution-wide — Duke's most prestigious merit recognition for incoming students, identified through the admissions process with no separate application required. University Scholars receive a scholarship providing full tuition plus a stipend toward room, board, and fees for eight semesters, with Duke meeting 100% of demonstrated need through grants rather than loans. Selection as one of fewer than ten scholars in the entering class represents recognition as among the most academically exceptional and broadly accomplished students admitted to one of the nation's top research universities. This distinction was ultimately declined in favor of Stanford, where the Boothe Prize and subsequent publication were earned.

Protecting All of the Children in the Auditorium
Victory Briefs
February 06, 2014
Co-authored a landmark two-part investigative essay series published on Victory Briefs — the most widely read platform in American competitive debate — with Jonathan Alston (Director of Debate, Science Park High School) and Aaron Timmons (Director of Debate, Greenhill School). The series addressed the epidemic of racially and gender-motivated online bullying in national circuit Lincoln-Douglas debate, drawing on social psychology research on bystander effects, groupthink, and racial micro-aggressions to make the case for enforceable community norms protecting all students regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Written while a PhD Candidate in Political Theory at Yale, the essay drew directly on doctoral research in constitutional law, equal protection doctrine, and the politics of marginalized communities. The series called on the National Speech and Debate Association, tournament directors, and debate institutions to implement and enforce codes of conduct as a prerequisite for participation — advocacy that contributed to subsequent structural reforms in the national debate community.

National Debate Champion Coach — NCFL Grand National Tournament, Eli Altman
NCFL
March 06, 2021
Coached student Eli Altman to a national championship at the 2021 National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) Grand National Tournament — the nation's premier Catholic interscholastic speech and debate tournament, held annually over Memorial Day weekend since 1952 and drawing qualifying competitors from diocese leagues across all 50 states and Canada. The 2021 tournament was held virtually — the first time in the organization's 70-year history the tournament was forced to a non-traditional format, due to COVID-19 — making this championship win a uniquely high-pressure achievement under unprecedented competitive conditions. The NCFL Grand National is a distinct and separate national title from the NSDA National Tournament, meaning this championship represents an additional national title beyond the three NSDA National Championships (2007, 2021, 2022) already documented in this profile — extending the total national championship coaching record across two separate national governing bodies.
