Malgré sa notoriété apparemment récente, le terme métavers a, en réalité, été inventé pour la première fois il y a trente ans, en 1992, par l’auteur de science-fiction Neal Stephenson. Son roman Snow Crash dépeint le métavers comme un monde virtuel en 3D où les individus – au travers d’avatars – se promènent, socialisent et interagissent les uns avec les autres et avec des personnages générés par l’IA du monde virtuel dans lequel ils évoluent.
