Big Data Science - What is it, Where is it going & Who will be needed?
LinkedIn
February 25, 2017
I recently had a dinner engagement with a true industry thought leader in Data Science (Dr. Veljko Krunic). We worked together back in 2010 on a truly amazing project for a healthcare company to integrate the industry (way ahead of it’s time) using cloud based technologies, data science, embedded analytics, federated query and search, vector processing, subscription-based agents, lightweight messaging, and security utilizing obfuscation, encryption and dynamic access models. I posed the question to him “where do you think the industry is heading and who will be needed?”. Our combined answers and the ensuing conversation appears below

Best Practice CDO Job Description
International Society of Chief Data Officers [ISCDO]
June 10, 2022
This document was created for C-Level executives and for Human Resources as a best practice guide for understanding the roles and responsibilities of a Chief Data/Digital Officer [CDO].

It describes the role of the CDO as:
"The Chief Data Officer (CDO) has the responsibility for identifying and creating value from data assets – “increasing data value” is the credo of the ISCDO.
The CDO’s mission is to enable and leverage information so that the organization can move toward a data-driven business model whereby critical business decisions are supported with trusted data, business intelligence and advanced analytics.
The CDO accountable for assimilating, cataloguing, inventorying, governing, and finding new sources of the organizations’ data and business metadata. The CDO articulates the vision and strategy for data management within the organization, and they are a champion for global data management, governance, quality, and vendor relationships across the enterprise.
The CDO must be an extremely effective communicator, working as a trusted advisor, to the board, C-suite, customers, and other stakeholders to align information with business initiatives and needs as well as ensuring the organization’s information is trusted, readily available, and that the right people see the right data at the right time.
The CDO’s role is to drive business outcomes utilizing data and as such making data readily accessible so that the right people, see the accurate data, at the appropriate time, for the exact purpose, with the right intent is a key to success.
The CDO is responsible for organizational compliance with data regulations and education regarding best practices in utilizing data with ethics and the correct intent."

A best practice is a method or technique that has been generally accepted within an industry as superior to other known alternatives because it often produces results that are exceptional to those achieved by other means or because it has become a standard way of doing things. Just as in data, we have a standard way of complying with legal or ethical requirements, best practices are used to maintain quality as an alternative to standards.

International Society Of Chief Data Officers (ISCDO) & MIT Chief Data Officer & Information Quality Symposium (CDOIQ)
August 25, 2021
The purpose of this document was to create a best-practice guide by which CDO’s, who first enter an organization (in their first 90 days in the position), can have a template which contains a blueprint of concerns, deliverables and considerations.
This document was originally created by Robert J. Abate using materials from his previous positions and content from Todd Harbour and was turned over to the ISCDO community for input and improvement.

Your First 90 Days As CDO
International Society of Chief Data Officers [ISCDO]
August 25, 2021
The purpose of this shared document is to create a best-practice process by which CDO’s, who first enter an organization (in their first 90 days in the position), can have a guide which contains a blueprint of concerns, deliverables and considerations.

This document was originally penned by Robert J. Abate using materials from his previous positions and content from many industry-recognized CDO’s and was published by the International Society for Chief Data Officers [IsCDO] for review.

This document is intended as a template to aide individuals in fulfilling the role of the Chief Data (or Digital) Officer [CDO] position – which it in itself is a conundrum, in that CDO’s can have vastly different organizational reporting, roles and responsibilities. This best practices’ document has been reviewed by a number of industry and business thought leaders and contributions from many have been included in this industry-agnostic collaborative effort. We believe that this will work just as well in private industry as in public positions but realize that each person must customize this to their corporate culture and their corporate defined responsibilities – as each CDO or even CDAO can be uniquely challenged.
