The financial services industry has spent years trying to untangle its AI and data strategy. Banks have tightened budgets, layered on technology, and optimized legacy systems—but instead of simplifying operations, these efforts have only made the knot tighter.

Here’s How AI/ML Challenges Nobel Laurette Daniel Kahneman’s View Of Predictability
Forbes
September 20, 2023
Daniel Kahneman's book, "Thinking, Fast and Slow," remains a captivating read, though it predates the era of AI/ML. Kahneman's exploration of system one and system two thinking aptly delineates the intricacies of cognitive processes (albeit with slightly different neural wiring). The convergence of these two cognitive modes plays a pivotal role in the success of various entities, from sports to startups and major corporations. Both, however, entail inherent risks and liabilities. When harmonized, they furnish remarkable capabilities and skills.

Are Tim Cooke And Elon Musk Generating The Right RNA For Their Back To Office Push?
LinkedIn
June 08, 2022
When the CEO of one of the most powerful and valuable companies in the world, Apple and Tim Cooke says, “we are running the mother of all experiments,” around the idea of what work is going to look like, you have to celebrate the brazen honesty in that statement. Elon Musk last week declared a mandate of back to work in the office for forty hours a week or it was time to leave Tesla. While Cooke acknowledges that we are living in the mother of all experiments when it comes to back to the office (BTO) Apple’s $5bn Apple Park HQ has got to feel like a potential piece of sunk capital in the current world of work in the office. That $5bn costs is the amount the IMF set aside for Ukraine in June 2020 to help it recover from the effects of Covid-19. Knowing what we know now, what was the better use of $5Bn?

Look around you and see how many of your friends, neighbors, and colleagues have an electric vehicle now. Maybe from 20 people, you could think of one or maybe two at most. Research done in late March 2022 from Cambia Information Group among a representative U.S. population shows that only 2% have an EV. This feels like a long way to go to get to the 2035 government mandate that all vehicles, 100% of them must be EV.

2024 Predictions for Sustainability

Date : December 06, 2023

We are caught in a maelstrom of intent but poorly matched with measurable actions. 2024 will illustrate this tension between words and a plethora of still unstructured actions around sustainability. Most CEOs still talk more than they act. Most companies don’t dig deep into their supply chains and change processes to make a difference. Something needs to radically change in 2024 or we continue where we have been in 2023 to talk more than we structure actions.

2023 Predictions for Metaverse

Date : November 22, 2022

The metaverse is like a Jules Verne book written about going to the Moon in the late 18th century. It’s all logical but we are still missing three key components that are essential for success: There is no killer application platform to build ecosystems from. Without that common platform we are going to struggle to make this easy for software companies. Barrier two is a recognition that the experience for humans needs to be logical in both components. Physical cannot replicate online and online or virtual is not a physical experience. Our brains are very smart and our ideas need to find the right point of synthesis ( maybe machine economy). Finally none of the companies laying claim to owning this world are doing a good job at either of these three variables for success. 2023 starts to see a recognition of these variables for success in the design. Maybe this is where we see future winners.

2023 Predictions for Supply Chain

Date : October 03, 2022

Imagine a world where there is no chain in the world supply. The shift in consumer expectations and many experiences from Covid (I want it now) and a volatile global set of markets have made supply chains indelibly strained. Thinking more about additive, manufacturing, and design, re cycling and 100% automated warehouses may have reached their moment of collective relevance in 2023. Put the word, intelligent in-front of supply chain and you just feel better than you might have in 2022. By the end of 2023 everybody who gets it right will talk about intelligent supply chains and additive manufacturing.

2023 Predictions for Future of Work

Date : October 03, 2022

Is there a future of work? It’s a strange 19th and 20th Century term when we think about what we have all experienced globally over the last three plus years. Work without a purpose, work just to earn money will increasingly feel like an outlier for us, in and out of the office. The real question for 2023 is how we question the very principles that have driven the industrial; and capitalist ages of the last two hundred plus year. Think of three questions we are all asking ourselves now. Do we need to be in the office to do work? How do we do our best work as individuals and as teams? What should the office feel like and where should it be? If we can answer these three questions for each of us in 2023 then maybe, we stop looking to old world norms (200 years of them) and co-create something that makes sense for now and the near future.

2023 Predictions for Thought Leadership

Date : October 03, 2022

Maybe this should be entitled what’s the next Zeitgeist moment? Authentic, value added, human, sustainable and controversial or provoking. These are really different variables to combine when you want to break through with an idea. However, with near constant access to information, ideas, news, etc, noise will tend to prevail for people and groups far more than signal. Great thought leadership leaves an indelible tattoo on the minds of people and truly changes thinking, ideas and practices. Grab one idea into 2023 and apply those five elements of authentic, value added, human, controversial and sustain it.

2023 Predictions for Cryptocurrency & NFTs

Date : October 03, 2022

The Dutch invented (maybe by default) the idea of speculative economics with tulips. Crypto and NFT’s feel a little like this. Value have boomed, sunk and done spirals better than any rollercoaster. Right now we are in a downward curve and spiral. The reality though is that the idea of Blockchain is 100% here to stay. It is secure, tradeable and very agile in its purpose. Once we break through the barrier of being able to sell our NFT’s or truly use a stable cryptocurrency for enough physical things this becomes interesting. Think about the value of Bitcoin. Launched at $132, nine years ago. It hit $48,000 a year ago and is now at $19,000. Speculative markets give people indigestion. Ask the Bank of England and the Chinese government where they are heading with this. If, in 2023 we can see cryptocurrency break across the metaverse to real world things this could be very interesting. It will take generations for a major shift as currencies tend to sovereign properties, but the power of blockchain to power AI, data science and knowledge management is extraordinary.

2023 Predictions for Sustainability

Date : October 03, 2022

This should no longer be a debate. By 2040 we will need 70% more energy on the earth if we want all citizens to experience the level of energy and resource consumption of the west. The bigger question is how we think about sustainability at the more microcosmic level, our lives as managers, parents and members of communities. Do we choose not to fly because the carbon footprint is worth more than the potential value of a meeting? Do we re cycle office space and furniture and not have whole buildings with AC when the team only meets there once a week? These sound like small, microcosmic things but for sustainability to truly work we each need to take deeper responsibilities for how we contribute. Research we just did with Cambia Information group showed how Americans by 2025 will be more to consider EV’s than ICU’s. That is ten years ahead of government legislation. Do we have enough charge stations at our offices or maybe local events we are planning. Every little thing will help in 2023 and beyond if we take this personally.

2023 Predictions for Digital Transformation

Date : October 03, 2022

If you have not been discussing this at your epicenter for the last five plus yeas it is unlikely you will now start and be successful. However even given that there are some deep new drivers for why, if you have been focusing on it you will need to accelerate the focus and tension in decision making for 2023. Labor shortages, especially in skilled and software roles will hurt you even more next year as companies increasingly rely on digital infrastructure (supply chain, operation, customer facing, product development). Supply chain issues will continue to be a challenge and a smoldering global economy and will put even great pressure on connected signal management between functions. Old pre digitally transformed methods of production supply chain and customer signal management will be badly exposed in 2023 as slow, dis-connected and inefficient.

2020 Predictions for Digital Transformation

Date : September 25, 2020

The journey continues as it has since 2014 when only 18% of corporations were well and truly on the right pathways. We will for the first time start to see an elevated focus as CEO’s get to see on a day to day basis how major competitors are eating their lunch with radical shifts in performance as their companies become digital platforms. The current rate of conversion to digital platforming success is still only 11.5% a year (measured annually since 2014). The key issue in 2020 will be what turns a CEO’s attention to a greater focus on the power of digital platforming?
