Musings on my 54th Birthday

Today is my 54th birthday, what does that really mean? A free breakfast at Denny's? A few presents and maybe a good meal from those who love you, social media posts wishing you a happy birthday? Why do we celebrate birthdays especially as adults? Are we giving thanks for the successful completion of another year or is it just another measuring stick that tells us that we need to act a certain way because we are now a teenager, now 21, now 30 or even now 54? As I ponder these small questions (and believe me they are small! LOL) I wanted to take a moment as I listen to the musical artist Kem to share a few stories of two women who I called "mother" as I journeyed through this experience we call life.

From foster care to redemption, this is my life story. Taken from my home as a child, I faced abandonment, identity struggles, and addiction. By 21, I was an Ivy League graduate battling severe drug and alcohol dependency. Just a few years later, I hit rock bottom, living on the streets, lost in darkness. But my journey didn’t end there. Through hard work and self-reflection, I changed the labels I once carried—criminal, addict, unwanted—and found hope, reconciling with my past and uncovering my true identity.
