In March 2023, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) failed, becoming the largest lender to collapse since the global financial crisis of 2007-09.The bank had loaded up on long-term bonds, taking an enormous unhedged bet on interest rates staying low. When that bet went wrong, the bank became insolvent. Although SVB had enough assets for depositors to get their money back, the wait was long. This left many tech firms facing difficulties, with nearly $500m tied up in the bank. In an effort to prevent panic and a lack of confidence in other banks, America's regulators and government guaranteed all of SVB's deposits, leaving the industry to be penalized for the recklessness of a single institution. Lessons from 2020: Preparing for the unthinkable

Despite 2020 being one of the strangest and most unpredictable years in our lifetime, the effects produced by the coronavirus were nothing new: interruptions in the supply chain, social and political unrest and the disruption of business continuity.
