What is Water Part 3?
Linkedin
February 12, 2026
It feeds crops, cools reactors and data centres, powers cities, lubricates factories, and underpins the ecosystems we call home. Yet most of the time we don’t see it, don’t measure it, and don’t design around it. We assume it will show up when we need it, from taps, from reservoirs, from aquifers, without ever acknowledging that water is infrastructure just as essential as roads, power lines, and digital networks.

Water looks ordinary until you look past the obvious. We drink it, swim in it, ship goods on it, generate power with it, and irrigate crops with it. Yet beneath this ordinary façade lies a set of physical properties so unusual that they defy the rules that govern almost every other substance on Earth.

It's time to stop looking for shortcuts to innovation success
Linkedin
March 12, 2016
We have become lazy innovators. Innovation is now such a buzzword, its become cheap, throw away and tantamount to meaningless. We throw it around without second thought. After all, if we are not innovative we are nothing. No one will want to work for a company that isn’t innovative. No one will do innovation if we don’t put it in their job title or job description. Innovation is a cheap commodity, used by marketing and HR teams to manipulate consumers (how many brands promote “innovation” as their thing explicitly), or to entice people to come and work for a highly innovative organisation. We are suckers for some good innovation marketing.

Is All This Technology Really Helping?
Linkedin
July 14, 2015
I was in a meeting last week with a senior team from a leading retailer. We were talking about a range of subjects around culture and technology when one person in the room exhaled and declared, “we have every single tool there is and we have a great culture, but nothing changes and people don’t really use the tools, at least not how we want them to…”

The Gopher Theory
Linkedin
March 20, 2026
There's a management lesson buried under the ash of Mount St. Helens. Quite literally.

When the volcano erupted in 1980, it didn't just rewrite the landscape. It incinerated it. Miles of thriving ecosystem reduced to collapsing slabs of porous pumice. A few seeds dropped by birds. A handful of struggling seedlings. Otherwise: nothing.

What is Water?

Part VI: Designing With Water

For most of modern history, we designed around water.

We built cities assuming rivers would stay put. We planned agriculture around predictable rainfall. We scaled industry and energy systems on the assumption that water would be cheap, abundant, and reliable.

That approach worked, until it didn’t.

This final part of What is Water? is about what comes next. Not how to control water, extract more of it, or push it further, but how to design with it, recognising water as an ancient system with rules, limits, and rhythms that innovation must respect rather than override.

Part V: Who Controls the Flow

Water does not just move through landscapes. It moves through power structures.

Who gets water, when, how much, and at what quality is never a neutral question. It is shaped by borders, laws, infrastructure, pricing, history, and force. Every society has a water politics, whether it acknowledges it or not.

This is Part V of What is Water? An exploration of water as power and governance, and why control of flow increasingly shapes inequality, stability, and cooperation at global scale.

More than half the water on Earth is older than the Sun. Not metaphorically older, but literally older, formed in interstellar ice before our solar system existed. Every glass of water contains molecules that predate every civilisation, institution, technology, economic system, and global infrastructure humans have ever created.

A systems-thinking reflection, building on our recent conversations about value.

What is Value?
Linkedin
November 13, 2025
Innovation is the creation of new or novel value.

But what exactly is value?

We talk about value as if it is obvious. Yet if you pause and ask what it really means, the question opens a chasm beneath modern business thinking. Is value money? Growth? Utility? Happiness? Or is it something subtler, the invisible expansion of human possibility?

One third of global revenue will flow through ecosystems by 2030: Make yours deliver
Linkedin
October 09, 2025
Innovation at scale is an ecosystem challenge. The biggest problems cross firm and sector boundaries, depend on shared data, and require permissions no single actor controls. By 2030, business ecosystems could account for roughly a third of the world’s revenue and an even larger share of profits according to McKinsey & Company. Leaders who treat ecosystems as systems to be designed, not as loose networks, are the ones turning ideas into adoption at pace.

The Coming Wave of Edge Computing

In 2008, few outside the research community had heard of “deep learning.” A handful of early adopters saw the wave coming, and transformed entire industries. The End of an Era: Bye Bye AOL
Linkedin
August 14, 2025
kssshhh—beeeeeeep—trrrr-REEE. If that sound still lives somewhere behind your ribs, this one’s going to land. At the end of September 2025, AOL will switch off dial-up for good, an ending many of us quietly filed under “already happened,” like discovering your old video shop still rents DVDs. And yet here we are: the modem chorus that walked us into the web is taking its final bow, while, astonishingly, hundreds of thousands of people have kept dialling in from spare rooms that haven’t changed their ritual in decades.
