The Sandwich Shop of Prompting: Prompt Engineering to Unlock AI's Full Potential
Business Media
March 30, 2024
Tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Microsoft's Copilot and Google's Gemini are changing the possibilities of what machines can produce, solve, and understand. "The Sandwich Shop of Prompting" not only shows you how these interactions work but also demonstrates the importance of well-designed prompts when working with any AI applications.
The author uses the Sandwich Shop of Prompting as an analogy to explain how we communicate effectively with AI tools by using clear detailed instructions as to what we want. The idea being that if you go into a sandwich shop and just ask for a sandwich, you'll get one, but it might not be your ideal choice, on the other hand, if you give the person behind the counter precise instructions (for example, chicken thigh with gouda cheese and finely shredded red cabbage, and sriracha mayonnaise on white sourdough bread) you'll get exactly what you want, and that's how prompting works.
The book begins with an introduction to prompt engineering and a look at other essential concepts that we ideally need to understand when using in AI. It then discusses various methods, ideas, and tips, as well as reflecting on the ethics and other challenges of prompting. It provides numerous models, examples, and guides, all designed to help you become a great prompter, with the intention that more often than not, you can get the sandwich you really want!
More than just a guide, this book is a basis for fundamental AI concepts, practical methods, ethical issues, and the challenges of effective prompt engineering. Filled with models, examples, and useful tips, it helps readers to improve their prompting skills, making sure they can always access AI's full capabilities.
Whether you're a developer, writer, educator, or enthusiast, "The Sandwich Shop of Prompting" will change how you interact with AI, ensuring you always get the "AI sandwich" you really want.

Cybersecurity in a Covid-19 World
ramsac
May 06, 2020
In this video cybersecurity expert Rob May explores cybersecurity considerations in a Covid-19 world. This was filmed as part of a webinar session at the end of April 2020.
In 2024, we can expect AI to progress significantly in terms of autonomy and complexity. We are likely to see wider implementation of AI in everyday applications, enhancing user experience and efficiency in industries like healthcare, finance, and customer service. Ethical and regulatory frameworks for AI will likely become more refined and critical, addressing concerns like data privacy, bias, and decision-making transparency. Additionally, advancements in AI's capabilities could lead to breakthroughs in solving complex problems, from climate change modelling to medical research, leveraging vast data analysis and predictive modelling
I think that cybersecurity in 2024 will see a landscape increasingly influenced by sophisticated AI and machine learning technologies. We'll likely see enhanced threat detection capabilities, as these technologies enable faster and more accurate identification of cyber threats. However, the same advancements could also empower malicious actors, leading to more advanced cyberattacks. Consequently, there will be a greater emphasis on developing robust AI-powered defence systems and a heightened focus on cybersecurity training and awareness programs.
2023 will see an increased focus on cybersecurity supply chain attacks. Whilst this isn’t a new risk, the reality is dawning on many smaller SMB/SME players in the supply ecosystem, and their much larger clients are realising the risk, and quite rightly, they are now getting much more cautious and demanding.
A cybercriminal will often attack an intended target by infiltrating a small supplier who has their own inroads to that business’ infrastructure. Smaller businesses have traditionally invested less in cyber resilience, but it is rapidly becoming a vital agenda item for everyone.
We’re slowly seeing a realisation with-in business that we have to do security differently and this will accelerate in 2022. People who say they have completed Zero Trust are wrong, it is not a product, you can’t get it off the shelf, and no single vendor can provide everything that’s needed. Businesses require a cybersecurity eco system based on zero trust encompassing multi-cloud services and an understanding that this will always be an ongoing journey rather than a destination.
Covid-19 has accelerated threats by moving more assets outside of the traditional physical and logical security boundaries. Work from Anywhere is now a ubiquitous standard and the CyberSecurity Mesh will proliferate as a result, ensuring secure access to, and use of, cloud-located applications and distributed data from uncontrolled devices. The Mesh approach decouples policy enforcement from policy decision making via a cloud delivery model allowing identity to become the security perimeter.
The lack of consistent cyber security training and education will become more of a problem and we will see bigger GDPR fines and consequences as a result. We will see more cyber security threats within the workplace due to the continued proliferation of Shadow IT. Unfortunately there are many existing threats which are still not being managed or patched and thus will continue to be a problem. The lack of security within IoT will come in to focus – the industry need to be discussing SoT – the Security of Things.
Google Cloud will grow through acquisition. Google Cloud is currently number 3 in the marketplace (after Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services) and I believe that they will look to land grab through investment in DevOps infrastructure tech that all companies are using.
Amazon will become a key on-premise server vendor. Hybrid cloud is growing in demand and Amazon’s AWS Outposts are their solution to this offering AWS-designed hardware which is fully managed and configurable compute and storage to go in on-premise racks specifically for hybrid cloud.
