TAX SEASON WARNING: AVOID THESE 7 COSTLY MISTAKES BY DR. LILLY MBINGLO, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
February 12, 2026
Imagine this situation...2 weeks before the filing deadline, a client called me in a panic.

He had done what many intelligent, capable professionals do under pressure. He listened to a friend. A confident friend. A “this-is-how-I-do-it-every-year” friend.

“Don’t worry about it,” the friend had said. “Just write everything off. They never check.”

Now he was reading a letter from the IRS.

Tax season is not a social media debate. It is not a guessing game. It is not a time for experimentation.

It is a legal process governed by statute, documentation, and compliance. The IRS does not operate on vibes, opinions, or internet shortcuts.

I asked him one question. “Did you want to save a little money, or did you want peace?”

He was silent.

The IRS does not play, and neither should you. Avoid these costly mistakes:

NEVER let anyone file your taxes without you reviewing the return first. If you didn’t see it, do not sign it.

DO NOT allow anyone to add income, deductions, or credits you cannot prove. The IRS requires documentation, period.

NO BUSINESS? Then do NOT claim business deductions. Simple and clear.

ALWAYS obtain a copy of your filed tax return with IRS acceptance confirmation and timestamp. If your preparer can’t provide this, BIG RED FLAG.

REMEMBER: The IRS audits YOU, not your tax preparer. If your preparer disappears when problems arise, you’re left holding the bag alone.

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Receipts. Statements. Records. “I didn’t know” will not save you in an audit.

STOP APPLYING RANDOM SOCIAL MEDIA TAX ADVICE. What worked for someone else may be illegal or incorrect for your situation.

And most importantly,

Work with a reputable tax professional who will still answer your calls after tax season, not just when it’s time to collect a fee.

How the New Tax Law, the OBBA Affects Your Taxes this Season by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
February 11, 2026
Many of you have been asking how the new tax law, the OBBBA, will affect your taxes this season. As we head into tax season, here are some things you need to know to plan smarter, not just file.

NEW Above-the-Line Deductions (Available Even If You Don’t Itemize)
These deductions reduce your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), which can unlock even more tax savings.

1)Senior Bonus Deduction (Age 65+)
$6,000 per qualifying individual
$12,000 for married couples if both are 65+
Phase-out begins at:
$75,000 MAGI (Single)
$150,000 MAGI (Married Filing Jointly)

This is on top of the standard deduction, not instead of it.

2) No Tax on Overtime (Non-Exempt Employees)
Deduct:
$12,500 (Single)
$25,000 (Married Filing Jointly)
Applies only to the “half-time” premium portion of overtime pay (hours worked over 40/week)
Not all overtime qualifies, your payroll records must clearly break this out.

Call our firm for free 15 minutes tax consultation: 757-977-8911

3) No Tax on Tips
Deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tip income
Applies to workers in customary tipping industries
Phase-out begins at:
$150,000 MAGI (Single)
$300,000 MAGI (Married Filing Jointly)
This is a game-changer for service workers, but documentation matters.

4) Car Loan Interest Deduction
Deduct up to $10,000 of interest on new vehicle loans
Vehicle must be assembled in the U.S.
Phase-out begins at:
$100,000 MAGI (Single)
$200,000 MAGI (Married Filing Jointly)
This is an interest deduction, not the purchase price, huge for planning vehicle purchases.

Call our firm for free 15 minutes tax consultation: 757-977-8911

5) Standard Deduction Increases (Locked In)
The OBBB Act permanently extended the 7 federal tax brackets (10%–37%) and increased standard deductions by ~7.9%.
Single / MFS- $15,750
Married Filing Jointly- $31,500
Head of Household- $23,625

6) Key Credit & Deduction Enhancements
Child Tax Credit (CTC)
Increased to $2,200 per qualifying child
Up to $1,700 refundable
Refundable credits = cash back, even if your tax bill is low.

7) SALT Deduction Expansion
Cap increased from $10,000 → $40,000
$20,000 for Married Filing Separately
Phases back down to $10,000 once MAGI exceeds $500,000
Major win for high-tax states, this changes itemizing strategies.

8) Retirement & Health Account Limits (2025)
Retirement Contributions
401(k) / 403(b): $23,500

IRA:
$7,000
$8,000 if age 50+

Health Accounts
HSA:
$4,300 (Individual)
$8,550 (Family)

Health FSA: $3,300
These accounts offer triple tax benefits when used strategically.

You Don’t Have a Money Problem. You Have a_____ Problem by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
April 06, 2026
Cousins...You Don’t Have a Money Problem. You Have a_____ Problem.

George Horace Lorimer in his book Letters From A Self-Made Merchant To His Son said: “Adjust your spending to match your earning capacity.”

It sounds simple.
But it’s the line that has saved generations from silent financial suffering.

Most people don’t go broke because they don’t earn.
They go broke because their appetite grows faster than their income.

Here’s the twist:
It’s not about being cheap, it’s about being conscious.

As a CPA, I can tell you I know what I am saying.

Too many chase appearances, not assets.
They buy to impress, not to invest.
They spend from emotion, not intention.

And slowly…
Freedom slips through their fingers.

That new gadget? Not urgent.
That trip? Not wise if you’re borrowing to fund it.
That habit of spending before planning? A hidden financial leak.

You don’t fix this by earning more.
You fix it by thinking better.

Want to win with money?
Let your spending reflect where you want to go, not where you are.

We are drawing closer to the end of the tax filing season
Need help? If you don’t have a good CPA you’re working with. Call or text 757-977-8911

One Question that Could Impact Your Entire Life & Career by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
March 31, 2026
Cousins...Let me ask you one question, one that could impact your entire life.

Well, it did for mine.

What would you do if you weren't afraid of being wrong or what people might say?

Sit and think through this question.

Because that question exposes the real cage which is fear.

Fear of looking foolish.
Fear of losing respect.
Fear of failing in front of people who aren't even in the arena.

And yet...deep down, you already know what you are called to start, say, contribute, build or walk away from.
But you have let fear negotiate the terms of your destiny.

Here is the truth:
Playing small doesn't keep you safe, it just keeps you hidden.
And nothing grows in hiding. Not your gifts. Not your joy. Not your impact.

When you answer that question honestly, things begin to shift.

Your focus will shift.
Where your time and money goes will shift.
Even the voices you choose to listen to will change.

Your next level isn't a strategy problem. It's a courage decision.

So ask yourself again...
What would I do if I wasn't afraid of being wrong?
Then go do it. Afraid. Anyway.
Your future is too important to be silenced by opinions.

Season of No Visible Career & Business Results by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
March 30, 2026
Cousins...Let’s talk about the season no one claps for.

You know that season of “no visible results.”

You are showing up.

You are working hard.

You are posting on all socials.

You’re networking, pitching, building, improving.

And yet, nothing seems to be moving.

No calls. No clients. No big break. Just silence.

I know that space. It’s frustrating. You begin to question yourself:

Am I wasting my time? Did I miss it? Is this even working?

But here’s the truth:

Not all growth is visible.

Some rewards are building under the surface like character, resilience, sharpness, wisdom and practical experience that no book or course can teach you.

Every step you take plants a seed. Some take longer to sprout. But quitting never makes them grow faster.

Keep showing up.

Keep sowing.

Keep becoming.

Keep working.

That room you want to be in is watching, even if you don’t see it.

That opportunity is coming together, even if it’s quiet right now.

That version of you you're becoming? That’s the real reward and what the marketplace and destiny needs.

You don’t just win when you arrive.

You win because you refused to disappear in the waiting season (No results season).

This season won’t last forever. But what it produces in you? That will last with you forever.

Stay in the process. Your harvest is already on the way.

We are still in tax season.

Tax Filing Warning #13: When Someone Controls Your Refund by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
March 13, 2026
Tax Filing Warning #13: When Someone Controls Your Refund

Your tax refund belongs to you. It should move directly from the IRS to your bank account or arrive by check in your name.

When a preparer asks for the refund to be deposited into their own account first, that arrangement deserves careful scrutiny.

Most taxpayers agree because they assume it simplifies the process.

The preparer promises to deduct their fee and send the rest. Unfortunately, this arrangement opens the door to serious abuse.

The amount returned to the taxpayer may be smaller than expected. Fees may appear that were never discussed.

In extreme situations the preparer disappears entirely, leaving the taxpayer to chase their own money.

Professional standards exist to prevent this kind of situation. Ethical tax professionals structure payments clearly and ensure refunds are directed to the taxpayer, not themselves.

Transparency builds trust. When you see exactly where your refund is going and how fees are handled, the relationship remains straightforward and respectful.

Your tax return represents your financial life for the year. Every step of the process should reflect integrity and professional standards.

Important Tax Reminders:

Important deadline for partnerships and S Corps.

Many business owners think the only important tax deadline is April 15. But if your business operates as a partnership or an S Corp, your tax return is due March 16.

Partnerships must file Form 1065 to report the business’s income, deductions, and financial activity. Each partner then receives a Schedule K-1, which they use to complete their individual tax returns. Same with the S Corps. They must file 1120 S as well and issue K-1s to shareholders.

If you’re not ready to file, make sure you file an extension to avoid penalties.

Tax Filing Warning #8: When the Refund Looks Too Good to Be True by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
March 05, 2026
Tax Filing Warning #8: When the Refund Looks Too Good to Be True

Every tax season I hear the same sentence from new clients: “My friend said their preparer got them a huge refund. Can you do the same for me?” It’s an understandable question.

A refund feels like relief after a long year of bills and responsibilities.

But the size of a refund should never be the selling point of a tax professional.

Some preparers promise big refunds because it attracts attention. The tactic often involves adding credits you may not qualify for or inflating deductions that cannot be supported. On paper it looks wonderful. For a moment it feels like a financial breakthrough.

Then months later the letter arrives.

The IRS reviews millions of returns every year, and when something does not match their records or rules, they follow up. That refund quickly becomes a bill. Not just the original tax owed, but penalties and interest as well. By that time the preparer who made the promise may be difficult to reach.

The part that surprises many people is this: the IRS holds the taxpayer responsible. Your name sits on that return. Your signature approves every number.

A healthy tax return is not about chasing the largest refund.

It is about accuracy, documentation, and lawful tax planning that stands up to scrutiny.

The goal is peace of mind long after filing season has passed.

If your return is prepared carefully, reviewed with you, and supported by real documentation, you can sleep well at night.

Tax Filing Warning 2: If You Cannot Prove It, Do Not Claim It - Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
February 24, 2026
Tax Filing Warning 2: If You Cannot Prove It, Do Not Claim It

Every tax season, someone leans across my desk and whispers, “Can we just add a little more?”

They mean income they did not earn or deductions they cannot support.

I understand the pressure. Refunds matter. Cash flow matters.

But documentation matters more.

The IRS requires proof. Bank statements. Receipts. Invoices. Mileage logs. Contribution letters.

If the numbers on your return cannot be backed up, they should not be there. It is that simple.

When income is inflated to qualify for credits, or deductions are created without records, the short-term gain can turn into long-term damage. IRS audits do not ask for stories. They ask for documents.

A healthy tax strategy is built on accuracy, not creativity.

I often tell clients that clean books bring peaceful sleep months after.

When you know every figure can be supported, you file taxes with calm confidence.

Before anything goes on your return, ask yourself, “If I receive a letter tomorrow, can I prove this?” If the answer is no, we step back and do it right.

Tax Filing Warning 1: If You Didn't Review It, Don't Sign It by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
February 23, 2026
Tax Filing Warning 1: If You Didn’t Review It, Don’t Sign It

You would never sign a mortgage without reading it right?

Yet every year, I meet good people who sign their tax return without ever seeing the final numbers.

They trust the preparer. They assume everything is fine.

Then months later, a letter arrives from the IRS.

Your tax return carries your name and your signature. That makes it your legal responsibility.

Before anything is submitted, you should carefully review your income, deductions, credits, bank information, and refund amount.

Does every number make sense?

Do you recognize all the entries?

Are there unfamiliar businesses or dependents listed?

If you do not understand something, ask. A reputable preparer welcomes questions.

I encourage clients to treat their tax return like a financial mirror. It reflects your year. It tells a story about your income, your decisions, your life. You deserve to see that story before it becomes part of your permanent record.

If a preparer rushes you to sign without review, pause. That is not professionalism. That is risk.

At The Ark NPS, we walk through your return together. You see it. You understand it. You sign it with confidence.

Correct this Nonprofit Mistake Before May 15 by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
April 24, 2026
Cousins...Do you run a nonprofit? Don't make this mistake..
(Welcome to my new series: Nonprofit Tax Season: What You Need to Know Before May 15)

One of the biggest mistakes I see nonprofits make is assuming that filing is only necessary when money is coming in.

That is not true.

Whether your organization raised funds or not, hosted programs or not, operated fully or spent the year quietly rebuilding, the annual filing requirement still matters.

The IRS does not pause its expectations because your organization had a slow year, changed leadership, or is “just getting started.”

And I say this with care because many nonprofit leaders are not careless. They are busy, they are serving communities, carrying vision, managing volunteers, and often doing more with less. But good intentions do not replace compliance.

Every year, your nonprofit must file the appropriate annual return. For some organizations, that may be Form 990-N. For others, it may be Form 990-EZ or Form 990. The form may vary, but the responsibility remains.

Here is the part every nonprofit leader must take seriously: if your organization fails to file for three consecutive years, your tax-exempt status is automatically revoked.

That means the organization may have to start over. New applications, new fees, waiting periods and administrative delays. In some cases, it can also affect donor confidence and grant opportunities.

This is why May 15 should not be treated casually.

Compliance is not just paperwork. It is stewardship, it protects the mission, the donors, the board, and the future of the organization.

So before the deadline passes, pause and check your records. Confirm what form you need to file. Make sure someone responsible is handling it.

A nonprofit can survive a quiet year. It should not lose its standing because no one filed.

Important Reminder: For nonprofits operating on a calendar year (January 1 – December 31, 2025), your tax filing deadline is May 15, 2026. Contact us: (757) 977-8911

Tax Filing Mistakes I See Yearly as a CPA - Post Tax Season Reset by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
April 23, 2026
Cousins...Every year, as a CPA I see a familiar pattern.

(Welcome to my new series: Post-Tax Season Reset: 13 Money Moves Smart Taxpayers Make)

The moment tax season opens, there is a rush, an urgency to file as quickly as possible, often driven by the anticipation of a refund.

I understand the appeal and desire for refunds. A refund can feel like relief, even reward.

But rushing the process, especially without complete information, quietly creates problems that many only discover later.

Filing early without all your documents is one of the most common and costly mistakes I encounter.

Income statements arrive late. Investment reports get updated. Corrections happen.

When a return is filed without these details, the result is often an amended return.

And amendments are not just administrative inconveniences. They take time to process, sometimes months. They can involve additional professional fees. More importantly, they introduce stress that could have been avoided with a bit more patience.

A well-prepared return is not about speed. It is about accuracy, completeness, and strategic thinking.

In some cases, waiting or even filing an extension is the wiser decision.

An extension is not a failure to act. It is a deliberate choice to ensure that what you submit reflects your full financial picture.

There is a discipline in doing things right the first time. It may not feel as satisfying in the moment as receiving a quick refund, but it protects you from avoidable corrections and unnecessary costs later.

If you find yourself uncertain about timing, documentation, or strategy, it is worth having a professional guide you through the process.

And if you do not currently have that relationship, my team at The ARK NPS is always here to help you approach your taxes with clarity and confidence.

Important Reminder: For nonprofits operating on a calendar year (January 1 – December 31, 2025), your tax filing deadline is May 15, 2026. Contact us: (757) 977-8911

The Structure that Changed my Daily Productivity by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
April 22, 2026
Cousins...I want to share with you a basic principle I live by that changes so much daily in the work I do.

You see, your time is not just passing, it’s being spent. Every single day.

And if we’re not careful, it slips through our hands without ever being directed.

You wake up with good intentions, the day fills up quickly, and before you know it, you’re tired… but not fulfilled.

Busy… but not moving forward.

I’ve been there& most of us have.

It’s not always laziness. Sometimes it’s just a lack of structure.

No clear plan for where your energy should go, so it gets pulled in every direction - messages, tasks, obligations, distractions.

And at the end of it all, the things that truly matter get what’s left, not what’s best.

That’s where the shift begins.

What if you started treating your time like something valuable enough to guide?

Not rigidly, not perfectly, but intentionally.

You begin your day knowing what matters most.

You decide, ahead of time, where your focus belongs.

You give your best hours to the work that builds your future, not just maintains your present.

Some time will always be spent on responsibilities. That’s part of life.

But there are also moments that can be invested, quietly, consistently in things that grow your capacity, your vision, your results.

You don’t need a complicated system.

Just a simple commitment: to stop letting time drift, and start giving it direction and structure.

Because the life, career, business, family you want is not built in random moments. It’s built in the ones you choose on purpose.

Basic Money Wisdom that Changes Everything by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
April 20, 2026
Cousins...I want to talk to you about money this new week, not from a place of pressure, but from a place of care.

A lot of people are living in what I’d call a “spend-first” rhythm.

You earn, you spend. Sometimes it’s survival- bills, responsibilities, things you can’t avoid.

Other times, it’s small comforts, little rewards to get through the week. And honestly, I understand that.

But if we stay there too long, it quietly traps us in financial bondage.

Because when money only flows in and out, with no intention behind it, you’re always reacting. Always catching up and always one unexpected situation away from stress.

And I don’t believe that’s the life we were meant to live.

What if, instead, you began to approach your money with the right financial intention?

Not anything extreme, just a shift in posture and commitment.

You start telling your money where to go before it disappears. You set aside something, even if it feels small at first.

You begin to think in terms of building, not just surviving one paycheck at a time.

Saving a little, Investing a little and Learning a little more about how money works in this capitalism system.

It may not feel dramatic in the moment. No one applauds small, disciplined decisions.

But over time, those choices begin to change your relationship with money and your sense of control.

You stop feeling like money is happening to you.

And you start building a life where money supports your vision and your future, not just your needs.

You don’t need perfection to begin. Just a decision to handle what you have with purpose from today.

I pray this inspires you. Let me stop writing grammar and enjoy my vacation. Smiles!

The Conversation Most People Don't Pay Attention to By Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
April 15, 2026
The Conversation Most People Don't Pay Attention to By Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA

Cousins...There’s a conversation happening in your life that no one else hears, but it’s shaping everything.

The way you speak to yourself.

I’ve heard people say it casually, almost as if it’s harmless:

“I’m not good with money.”

“That kind of life isn’t for people like us.”

It sounds like honesty and humility. But it’s not and it’s identity.

And identity, when left unchecked, quietly becomes your direction.

Over time, those words settle in. They begin to define what you try, what you avoid, what you believe is even possible and who you relate with. You don’t just think them, you start living them.

That’s why this matters more than most people realize.

If you carry the wrong identity, you will keep producing the wrong results in life, career, business, relationships...no matter how hard you work.

You’ll sabotage opportunities without even noticing. You’ll shrink back at the very moments that require you to step forward.

And I don’t want that for you.

What if you began to shift the conversation? Not with empty affirmations, but with intentional, grounded truth.

“I’m learning how to manage money well.”

“I’m capable of building something meaningful.”

“I can grow into the person this next level requires.”

It may feel unfamiliar at first. That’s okay. Growth often feel unfamiliar at first.

But something begins to change when your words start aligning with who you’re becoming and where you want to be.

You show up differently. You take better risks. You begin to act from possibility, not limitation.

Be mindful of what you think and say to yourself.

Because the life you build will always follow the identity you believe.

The Quiet Influence Shaping Your Life by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
April 14, 2026
Cousins...There’s a quiet influence shaping your life more than you may realize...

I say this with care, not judgment.

Some relationships feel familiar, even comfortable, but if we’re honest, they slowly drain something from us.

Constant complaints, dismissive attitudes toward growth and subtle resistance whenever you talk about doing more, becoming more, building something meaningful.

At first, you brush it off. Then over time, it starts to affect how you think.
You second-guess your ideas. You lower your expectations and you begin to normalize staying where you are.

And that’s the part that concerns me.

You were not designed to shrink just to maintain proximity with people who refuse to grow.

This doesn’t mean you cut people off harshly or become distant without reason.

It simply means you become intentional.
You start asking yourself, who is helping me think better?
Who challenges me to rise?
Who brings solutions instead of excuses?

Those are the voices that matter.

You need people who stretch your thinking, who are building, who are solving real problems, who hold themselves to a higher standard. Not perfect people, but people who are moving forward.

Because something powerful happens when you’re in the right environment. Your thinking sharpens, your courage increases and your vision expands.

And slowly, you begin to see yourself differently.

Protect your circle and build it with intention.

Your future will reflect it.

This Will Change the Direction of Life by Dr. Lilly Mbingo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
April 10, 2026
Cousin...there’s something I want to say to you, not as an expert speaking to an audience, but as someone who genuinely cares about where your life is going.

Be careful what you feed your mind.

It sounds simple, but it’s quietly shaping everything, your decisions, your confidence, your expectations, even what you believe is possible for your life.

And lately, I’ve noticed how easy it is for all of us to drift into consuming random entertainment, viral clips, endless scrolling. It feels harmless. It feels like a break.

But over time, it does something subtle, it lowers your standards without asking for permission.

You start thinking less strategically, you lose depth and you react more than you create.

And the truth is, you deserve better than that.

If you’re serious about building something meaningful from your career, your business, your legacy, then your inputs have to match that vision.

You can’t expect clarity while feeding on confusion. You can’t expect growth while consuming things that don’t stretch you.

So maybe it’s time for a small but powerful shift.

What if you became more intentional?
What if your daily intake included voices that challenge you, ideas that sharpen you, content that actually builds you?

Books that expand your thinking.
Conversations that elevate your perspective and exposure.
Learning that positions you for where you’re going.

You don’t need to cut off everything, just be more selective.

Because the life you want isn’t just built by what you do.
It’s shaped by what you consistently allow into your mind.

I pray this inspires you.

This is the Cave that Silently Steals Destinies by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
April 08, 2026
Cousins...I discovered the cave that silently steals destinies.

There is a cave where many dreams die in silence.

It doesn't have rocks or walls.
But it traps like prison.
It's the cave of self doubt & fear.

Inside this cave, destinies shrink.
Industry voices go unheard.
Solutions that people have for other people stay buried.

And while the world waits for your light, you stay hidden.
You are convinced you are not ready.
You keep believing you are not enough, not "there" yet.

Is this you?

But here is the hard truth.
This cave is costly.
It's not just stealing your confidence.
It's limiting your income & delaying your wealth.

Some people are not broke because they lack skills.
Many are stuck because fear and self doubt buried their boldness.

Is this you?

It's time to break out.
Not tomorrow. I mean now.

Here 3 bold moves for you to break out:

a. Name your cave:
What lie are you believing?
Fear of rejection? Fear of being seen?

b. Challenge the darkness:
Shine truth into that fear.
Journal it.
Access knowledge to conquer it.
Speak against it.

c. Make a scary move:
Yes, that is it.
Post that offer on social media.
Pitch to that client.
Launch that business.

Freedom doesn't start on the mountaintop.
It starts the moment you walk out of your cave.

So... what is your cave?
And when will you leave it?

Tax Filing Warning #12: Beware of Tax "Ghost Preparers" by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
March 12, 2026
Tax Filing Warning #12: Beware of Tax "Ghost Preparers"

There is a small line on every tax return that many taxpayers never notice. It is the section where the paid preparer signs and includes their PTIN, the identification number issued by the IRS.

They are required to sign, whether on paper or digitally (e-file), to vouch for the accuracy of the return. A preparer who refuses to sign is known as a "ghost preparer" and is a major red flag for potential fraud.

That signature carries meaning.

When a preparer signs the return, they acknowledge responsibility for the work they performed. It signals that they stand behind the preparation and are willing to be identified if questions arise.

Some fraudulent preparers avoid this step entirely. They file the return but leave the preparer section blank. If problems appear later, they are difficult to trace and nearly impossible to hold accountable.

A trustworthy professional has no reason to hide. Their name appears clearly on the return. Their identification number is included. Their contact information is available.

That transparency protects both the preparer and the taxpayer.

If someone prepares your taxes but refuses to sign the return, pause and ask why. Honest work rarely hides from documentation.

Your tax return should reflect professionalism at every step.

Important Tax Reminders:

Important deadline for partnerships and S Corps.

Many business owners think the only important tax deadline is April 15. But if your business operates as a partnership or multi-member LLC, your tax return is due March 16.

Partnerships must file Form 1065 to report the business’s income, deductions, and financial activity. Each partner then receives a Schedule K-1, which they use to complete their individual tax returns.

If you’re not ready to file, make sure you file an extension to avoid penalties.

Tax Filing Warning #11 (plus reminders): The IRS Already Knows Your Income by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA

Tax Filing Warning #11 (plus reminders): The IRS Already Knows Your Income

Sometimes people wonder if leaving out a small income form might help reduce taxes. Maybe a 1099 from a side job.

Perhaps a small contract payment that slipped through the cracks.

What many taxpayers do not realize is that the IRS usually receives those same forms.

Employers send W-2s directly to the IRS. Companies issuing 1099 forms do the same.

Their systems compare what was reported to what appears on your return. When something is missing, the discrepancy appears quickly.

The result is a notice explaining that income was underreported. The IRS recalculates the tax owed, adds penalties, and includes interest. A short-term shortcut becomes a much larger bill.

Accurate income reporting protects you from this situation. Every W-2, every 1099, every source of income should be accounted for carefully. It may not always increase your refund, but it keeps your return consistent with IRS records.

A reliable preparer reviews income documents carefully and ensures nothing is overlooked. That attention to detail prevents unnecessary problems later.

Taxes work best when they reflect the full story of your financial year.

Tax Filing Warning #10 (plus reminders): Tax Credits Come With Rules by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
March 10, 2026
Tax Filing Warning #10 (plus reminders): Tax Credits Come With Rules

Credits can be powerful. When claimed properly, they reduce tax liability and sometimes increase refunds. Different credit programs exist to support taxpayers who meet specific criteria.

The difficulty appears when those credits are applied without qualification.

Some preparers treat credits as easy ways to boost refunds. They check boxes without verifying eligibility. A dependent may not actually qualify. An education credit may be claimed without the required documentation. Income limits may be ignored.

At first nothing seems wrong. The return is filed. The refund arrives.

Later the IRS may review the claim and request proof.

That review can lead to delays, repayment demands, and sometimes restrictions on claiming certain credits in the future.

Each credit has detailed requirements. Household structure, income levels, educational enrollment, or dependent relationships all play a role. When those rules are respected, the credit works exactly as intended.

A careful tax preparation process involves asking questions, reviewing documents, and confirming eligibility before any credit appears on the return.

It may take a little more time, but it protects you from unpleasant surprises later.

Tax Filing Warning #9: Fake Businesses and Fabricated Losses Lead to Real Problems
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
March 09, 2026
Tax Filing Warning #9: Fake Businesses and Fabricated Losses Lead to Real Problems

I occasionally meet taxpayers who were told something that sounds clever at first. “Let’s create a business on your return. That way we can write things off.”

The suggestion may come from a preparer trying to increase a refund. They enter business income that never existed or inflate expenses to show a loss. The numbers reduce the tax bill, and the return looks appealing on paper.

But the IRS does not view it as creative accounting. They view it as fraud.

A real business involves activity, records, and a genuine intent to earn profit.

There are invoices, receipts, expenses tied to actual work. Without those elements, the deduction has no foundation.

When fabricated businesses appear on tax returns, audits become more likely. Investigations follow. The taxpayer must explain transactions that never actually occurred.

That situation creates stress no refund can justify.

If you operate a legitimate business, proper deductions are part of responsible tax planning. They help reduce tax legally and reward real entrepreneurial effort. The key word is legitimate.

A careful preparer protects you from shortcuts that may look attractive today but create serious consequences tomorrow.

Your tax return should reflect reality, not imagination.

Tax Filing Warning #7: Stop Following Random Social Media Tax Advice by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA

Tax Filing Warning #7: Stop Following Random Social Media Tax Advice

I understand the temptation. A short video promises a bigger refund.

A post claims a “secret deduction.” It sounds easy. It feels urgent.

But tax law is personal. What works for one person may be illegal or incorrect for another. Filing status, income level, dependents, state rules, business activity. All of these matter.

If you have read the previous warnings, you will definitely understand why following random social media tax advice is not the best for you.

I have seen clients apply advice they found online, only to face penalties months later. The video creator (who is not a CPA) never answers the IRS notice.

Real tax strategy is thoughtful and specific. It is built on your documents, your goals, and your compliance obligations.

Before acting on anything you see online (even from me), pause and verify. Ask whether it applies to your exact situation. If you are unsure, get professional guidance.

Your financial reputation deserves more than trending advice on social media. It deserves careful review.

Tax Filing Warning #6: Document Everything by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA

Tax Filing Warning #6: Document Everything

“I didn’t know” is not a defense in an IRS audit. I say that gently, but clearly.

Receipts matter.

Bank statements matter.

Mileage logs matter.

Donation letters matter.

Good intentions are not documentation.

I advise clients to treat recordkeeping as a habit, not a scramble in March. Create a folder. Use accounting software. Take photos of receipts immediately. Keep organized digital backups.

When documentation is in place, tax preparation becomes smoother and more accurate. When it is missing, we are forced to guess. Guessing has no place on a tax return.

If you operate a business, even part-time, your recordkeeping should be disciplined.

The IRS expects consistency. Organized records demonstrate seriousness and credibility.

The peace that comes from good documentation is real. You file knowing you are prepared. If questions arise, you respond with facts.

Taxes do not have to feel chaotic. With the right structure, they become manageable.

Tax Filing Warning #5: The IRS Audits You, Not Your Preparer - Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
March 02, 2026
Tax Filing Warning #5: The IRS Audits You, Not Your Preparer

This truth surprises people. When the IRS sends a notice, it is addressed to you. Not your tax preparer.

Not the person who “handled everything.”

Your signature on that return means you are responsible for its accuracy.

If a preparer disappears, changes phone numbers, or refuses to respond, the IRS still expects answers from you.

That is why choosing the right professional matters.

You want someone who is legit, licensed, who stands with you, explains your return clearly, and remains accessible after filing season ends.

I have helped clients clean up returns prepared by others.

In many cases, the original preparer was nowhere to be found. The client felt alone, confused, overwhelmed and afraid.

A good CPA does not vanish in April. We remain present. We respond to notices. We guide you through resolution if needed.

When you file through a professional, you are not just buying a service.

You are entering a professional relationship. Choose someone who treats it that way.

Tax Filing Warning #4: Always Get Proof of Filing - Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
February 26, 2026
Tax Filing Warning #4: Always Get Proof of Filing

One of the most painful conversations I have each year goes like this: “I thought my taxes were filed.” Then we check the IRS records. Nothing was submitted.

When your return is electronically filed, you should receive confirmation of acceptance from the IRS, complete with a timestamp. This is not optional. It is basic professional practice.

You should also receive a complete copy of your signed return. Not a summary. Not a screenshot. The full document.

This is so basic that many people ignore this.

If your preparer cannot provide proof of filing and IRS acceptance, that is a serious warning sign.

Filing is not a handshake agreement ahaha. It is a documented transaction.

I encourage clients to store their return and acceptance confirmation in both digital and physical formats. Keep it safe. If questions arise later, you will not be scrambling for proof.

Filing taxes should never feel uncertain. You should know when it was filed, what was filed, and that it was officially accepted.

Wisdom in Heels: 40 Bullets You Should Shoot in Life - A Dr. Lilly Mbinglo Legacy
Edwin N. YONGKA
January 15, 2026
Wisdom in Heels is an invitation to witness wisdom in motion. It captures the legacy of Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, a woman whose life has shaped homes, classrooms, communities, and countless lives.

Written as a tribute by her husband in honor of her 40th birthday, this book presents forty practical life principles known as “bullets.” These bullets speak into real moments, daily relationships, challenges, and personal growth. They teach you not only how to think differently, but how to live deliberately.

This book is not a self-help manual in the traditional sense. It does not command or promise instant transformation. Instead, it walks beside you, offering perspective and guidance. It is a wisdom companion for the journey of real life.

Wisdom in Heels is written for:

Women navigating purpose, growth, identity, and calling
Men seeking wisdom rooted in character and responsibility
Leaders, entrepreneurs, parents, and builders of legacy
Anyone who believes wisdom is lived, not just learned.

This is a book to read slowly. A book to return to.

New Book Release: Letters to My Current And Future Clients - Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
January 02, 2026
Friends, let me share something personal with you today. I hope it encourages someone who’s been sitting on something unfinished.

Many of you know I love teaching and sharing. Long before all the fancy formats, I used to host Wednesday Money Talks on Facebook back in 2015–2017, answering real questions about money, taxes, and business.

During the COVID lockdown in 2020, those conversations turned into a book. I wrote it as letters, answering the exact questions my clients kept asking. I called it Letters to My Current and Future Clients.

I finished the manuscript in 2021. We even worked on the cover. But something in me kept saying, “Not yet.” Life got busy, and that book, along with a few others, sat on the back burner.

Honestly, I carried a quiet sense of failure about it for a long time.

Then 2024 happened. While preparing for my mum’s memorial anniversary, I had a wake-up moment. Time doesn’t wait. I pushed through and published Fabric of a SHERO. That decision changed something in me....read more

Letters to My Current & Future Clients: Straight Talk, Wisdom, and Smart Strategies for Every Stage of Entrepreneurship by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
January 02, 2026
What if you had a CPA in your corner, writing to you honestly, strategically, and with your long-term success in mind?

In Letters to My Current and Future Clients, Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA, accounting professor, entrepreneur, CPA firm founder, and trusted advisor, shares the real conversations she has had with business owners, nonprofit leaders, and entrepreneurs navigating money, taxes, growth, and legacy.

This book is written as a series of letters, each inspired by real questions from real people. The names have been changed, but the situations are real, and so are the solutions. From starting a business and choosing the right entity, to tax planning, wealth building, audit readiness, and succession planning, each letter meets you exactly where you are and walks you forward with clarity and confidence.

Inside these pages, you will learn how to:
• Choose and structure your business entity wisely
• Know when and when not to switch to an S Corporation
• Pay yourself correctly and sustainably
• Understand and confidently claim tax deductions
• Price your services with clarity and confidence
• Use accounting systems that support growth and compliance
• Build wealth beyond your business through intentional planning
• Hire your spouse or children strategically and compliantly
• Use insurance, retirement plans, and real estate as wealth tools
• Stay audit-ready and avoid common IRS penalties
• Plan for taxes year-round instead of scrambling once a year
• Prepare your business for succession or sale

This is not a book of theory or tax jargon. It is practical, plain language guidance from a CPA who has seen what works, and what quietly costs business owners money, peace, and momentum.

You do not have to read this book from cover to cover. Think of it as a toolbox you can return to at every stage of your journey. Whether you are launching your first side hustle, managing a growing company, running a nonprofit, or preparing for exit and legacy, there is a letter written just for you.

Dr. Lilly keeps it simple, she keeps it honest, and she keeps it actionable, because while tax law may be complex, your strategy does not have to be.

This book is an invitation to stop guessing, start planning, and build something that lasts, with wisdom, faith, and intention.

Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA & The ARK NPS Recognized as Best Certified Public Accountant in Chesapeake for 2026

I want to share an update with you that means a great deal to me and to our team.

Ark NPS has been recognized as the Best Certified Public Accountant in Chesapeake for 2026 by BusinessRate. This award is based on verified data from Google reviews, carefully analyzed and certified by BusinessRate.

What makes this recognition special is how it is earned. It is not something you apply for or campaign toward. It comes directly from the honest feedback of clients who have experienced our work firsthand.

BusinessRate focuses on helping local businesses grow through data and real customer insights. Their Best of 2026 Awards highlight firms that stand out in customer satisfaction, reputation, and quality of service. To be included in that group is something we do not take lightly.

For those who may be new here, Ark NPS was built on a simple belief. Your mission matters, and your financial systems should support it.

We serve individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations with accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, planning, and consulting. 2 Influencer Awards
Dr. Lilly Nominated as Consultant of the Year
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
March 23, 2026
I am honored to share that I have been nominated for the Thinkers360 Consultant of the Year at the 2026 Thought Leadership Awards.

This moment carries weight for me, not simply as recognition, but as confirmation of the work I have committed to over the years.

As a CPA and tax consultant, I have focused on serving individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations with practical, results-driven solutions.

Every engagement, whether a one-on-one consultation, a training session, a live show, or a book, has been guided by a simple objective: help people make sound tax and financial decisions and build something that lasts.

The Thinkers360 Annual Awards bring together a global community of thought leaders across industries. The Consultant of the Year category, in particular, recognizes those whose work goes beyond advice and translates into measurable outcomes for clients. It speaks to strategy that works in real situations, not just in theory.

For me, this nomination reflects the consistency of that approach. I have always believed that consulting should be both clear and actionable. Clients should leave every interaction with direction they can apply immediately. Over time, I have seen how the right tax and financial guidance can stabilize a business and family, restore confidence, and create new opportunities for growth.

What makes this especially meaningful is the range of people and organizations I have had the privilege to serve. From individuals navigating complex tax situations to business owners seeking structure and clarity, to nonprofit leaders working to stay compliant while advancing their mission, each experience has shaped the way I think and serve.

Beyond my consulting work, I continue to invest in teaching and knowledge sharing. Whether through structured trainings, public conversations, written content or as Accounting Professor with Regent University, my aim remains the same: to simplify complexity and equip others to act with confidence in this industry.

I do not take this nomination lightly. It is a reminder that good work, done consistently and with integrity, does not go unnoticed.

To support & vote click here: https://www.thinkers360.com/tl/annual_awards/voting?cat=1&scat=4

To my clients, partners, and community, thank you for the trust you place in me. It is both a responsibility and a privilege I carry with care.

Thinkers360 has officially released the Top 150 Women B2B Thought Leaders and Influencers for 2026. The list was published ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, and it recognizes women whose work is shaping conversations and progress across business and professional fields.

To be included on this list is both meaningful and humbling.

For those who may be meeting me here for the first time, my name is Dr. Lilly Mbinglo. I am a licensed CPA, an Accounting Professor, a TEDx speaker, an author, and the founder and CEO of Ark NPS, a CPA firm that serves individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations.

For more than a decade, my work has focused on helping clients gain clarity in their finances and make wise decisions that support long term growth. I believe financial systems should support the whole life of a person or organization. When finances, purpose, family, and impact move in the same direction, real stability begins to form.

Our firm, Ark NPS, has been ranked the No. 1 Certified Public Accountant firm in Chesapeake, Virginia by BusinessRate and the No. 1 Best Accounting Firm in Chesapeake by ThreeBestRated. I have also previously been recognized among the Top Voices in North America 2025 and the Top 10 Thought Leaders in Finance by Thinkers360.

Alongside client work, I continue to write and teach. My books include:

???? 2025 Business Planner – Guide to Tax Strategies and Business Success

???? The Fabric of a Shero: Business Success Tips from a Shero Who Did It All

???? Hire Your Kids, Save Taxes, and Build a Legacy

???? From Vows to Ventures: Building a Successful Business Partnership for Married Couples

???? Letters to My Amazing Kidpreneurs

???? Letters to My Super Teenpreneurs

???? Letters to My Current and Future Clients: Straight Talk, Wisdom, and Smart Strategies for Every Stage of Entrepreneurship

The book Hire Your Kids, Save Taxes, and Build a Legacy reached No. 1 on Amazon Hot New Releases in both the Small Business and Corporate Taxes categories.

In addition, I serve as Director of the MS in Accounting program at Regent University, and I teach in both the MBA and MS in Accounting programs. My courses include Accounting for Entrepreneurial Leaders, Advanced Financial Theory and Practice, Advanced Not for Profit Accounting, Tax Research and Professional Practice, and Advanced Tax S Corp and Partnerships.

To everyone who has supported this journey, thank you. Your trust and encouragement mean more than you know. I look forward to continuing this work together.

Received a letter from the IRS? Don’t panic.

Received a letter from the IRS? Don’t panic.

Many people assume that an IRS letter automatically means penalties, audits, or serious problems. In reality, that’s often not the case.

Many IRS notices are simply requests for additional information, corrections, or clarification.

What matters most is not ignoring the letter. Responding promptly can prevent small issues from becoming much bigger problems.
If you’ve received an IRS notice and aren’t sure what it means, get professional guidance before taking action.

2 Media Interviews
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA on WTKR News 3 Discussing on Tax Filing
WTKR News 3 TV
April 16, 2026
I had the privilege of being featured on a news segment with WTKR News 3, where I spoke about something many people face every year but often misunderstand: last-minute tax filing and extensions.

It was an opportunity I do not take lightly.

In that conversation, I broke down what requesting a tax extension really means, and just as important, what it does not mean. Many people assume an extension gives more time to pay, it simply gives you more time to file, and that distinction can save people from unnecessary penalties and stress.

Moments like this remind me why I do the work I do.

Whether I am sitting across from a client, teaching in a classroom, or speaking on a public platform, the goal remains the same. Bring clarity where there is confusion. Provide guidance people can actually use. Help individuals, businesses and nonprofits make informed decisions that protect and position them well.

To be trusted with a platform like this, even for a few minutes, is both a responsibility and a privilege.

If you have ever felt unsure about taxes, deadlines, or what steps to take, you are not alone.
Conversations like this are exactly why I continue to show up and serve.

Blessings!

I am Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA,

I serve through The Ark NPS , a full-service Accounting Firm, where we provide Accounting services, Bookkeeping, Payroll, Tax Preparation, Planning, Resolution and Consulting, as well as Startup services to Individuals, Businesses and Nonprofits.

2 New Books Help Parents Raise Confident, Creative, Business-Minded Kids by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA

Two New Books Help Parents Raise Confident, Creative, Business-Minded Kids.
Parents everywhere are asking the same question:
How do I help my child build confidence, creativity, and real-world skills early, without pressure or burnout?

Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA, professor, and entrepreneur, answers that question with the release of 2 heartfelt books written directly to children and teens:
- Letters to My Amazing Kidpreneurs and
- Letters to My Super Teenpreneurs .

These are not textbooks. They are warm, encouraging letters that meet young minds where they are - curious, imaginative, and full of potential.

Letters to My Amazing Kidpreneurs invites children to see their ideas, curiosity, and kindness as early business superpowers. Through simple stories, playful challenges, and parent-guided activities, kids learn that confidence matters more than perfection and that small ideas can grow into something meaningful.

Letters to My Super Teenpreneurs speaks to teens navigating identity, money, technology, and purpose.
It blends mindset, practical business thinking, digital responsibility, and values, helping teens see entrepreneurship as a tool for service, not just income.

Together, these books support parents who want more than grades and screens for their children.
They want courage. Responsibility. Initiative. And belief.

Both books are now available on Amazon:
• For Kidpreneurs: https://a.co/d/gWp0e2b
• For Teenpreneurs: https://a.co/d/hb0qsI0

For families raising the next generation of thoughtful leaders, these letters are a powerful place to start.

Tax tip for business owners: 3rd Party Payment Tips by Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
Dr. Lilly Mbinglo, CPA
April 01, 2026
Tax tip for business owners:

If you process payments through platforms like PayPal, Square, Stripe, or Wix… you may receive a 1099-K.

And this is where many mistakes happen.

The IRS already receives a copy of that form, so if it’s not reported correctly on your return, it can trigger notices or discrepancies.

But here’s the key: Your 1099-K shows gross payments, not your actual profit.

That means you still need to account for fees, refunds, and expenses to report your income accurately.

Don’t ignore it. Don’t guess. Make sure it’s handled correctly.

Need help reviewing your numbers?
