What is said in the name of Safety

I often hear people talking about how a given slang word is “breaking containment.” By this, they’re usually describing the spread of a community-specific term into mainstream usage. Consider “props,” from African-American Vernacular English; “slay,” from the ballroom scene; and “farming,” from gamer culture. Breaking containment calls up metaphorical imagery of various and often science-fiction-grade scenarios: the alien escaping its examination chamber, the lethal biochemical leaked from a lab, or a hardened killer digging his way out of the penitentiary. And with any such danger, there’s a dash either to recontain it or to destroy it altogether. What’s interesting about language is that it doesn’t become more dangerous after escaping containment. In fact, it’s considered all but neutralized — made meaningless by overuse.

For me here in Australia this was as far removed from reality as I could imagine. The idea that someone could treat another person as dismissively as that, with the idea of pitting people against each and the dehumanising never sat well with me, if fact the whole ‘Reality TV’ genre has never interested me. It was never reality.

Any approach that seeks an understanding of culture requires a sophisticated sense of ‘knowing’ because, culture in itself cannot be defined or controlled like some would like. Indeed, in seeking to define (and control) Culture one already reduces it by a method of reductionism. That is, culture cannot be defined propositionally. Neither can culture be dissected through science. You can’t know Culture by going to a dictionary to find meaning. Such an approach just gives a dictionary definition but loses all the nuances of meaning gained through engagement, living, being, context, Socialitie and experience.
