Cold-Email Fails that Will Make You Want to Cringe!
MS Category Management
April 29, 2022
Cold-emails can be easy to mess up! So don't make these easy mistakes.

Cold email campaigns (the bad ones) are annoying, am I right?

In a previous blog, I talk about writing a cold-email that people will want to respond to.

Based on the responses from this post, I thought it would be fun to share a few of the fails I’ve seen when it comes to cold emails.

Emails Rant. How many days will it take to get a response from a busy coworker? 2,697 aggravating days later, I’m still counting!
MS Category Management
October 28, 2021
It’s been a long time since I’ve had something rant about, but I’m about over this whole ‘never get back to me’ emails thing. I get that people are busy, and have their own agendas.

But let’s face it, unless you are in the C-Suite or a SVP/EVP, you’ve got time to respond within the next week or two. It’s not like I’m asking for a miracle here.

It’s the beginning of the holiday season, so procurement and finance are all preparing for the year-end hockey stick budget spending.

Sometimes it happens by default. Projects are running behind. And you know you are going to come drastically under budget, so you spend like it’s on-fire in your pocket instead. Fear of loss is a thing (especially when it comes to money!)

Rant: My So-Called 2020 Pandemic Life
MS Category Management
November 23, 2020
I quit. I’m done. I’m over it. Nothing sums up this year better than “it’s a hot mess, inside the dumpster fire, inside a train wreck.” Because as a working parent, it literally is. Every. Single. Day. It’s at a point now (with no end in sight) I’ve hit my breaking point – as I’m sure many of you feel the same! So what should change?

First, can we just forget about Zoom meetings? Can we just go back to conference calls so I don’t have to be video-ready every day? It’s getting to be exhausting. And sad when I throw on glasses so I don’t have to do my makeup that day. Who is with me?!

And I’m done with all things virtual. Conferences. Happy Hours. Let’s bring back water cooler talk. Office gossip. Annoyingly loud coworkers a few desks away on their phones. Where do I sign up?!

Also, I would do absolutely anything, not to deal with my kids when I’m working. This one is taking a toll on me. And everyone I work with. There, I said it!! Everything about working from home with a 2-year-old who doesn’t get it has ripened waaaaaay past its due date.

A supplier coaching story. Who is to blame for the great flopperoo?
MS Category Management
November 17, 2020
Supplier coaching isn’t an exact science, which leaves ample opportunity to mess it up. But it’s not like we are trying to figure out how to time travel either.

Therefore, I decided to take a look back at what happened, and potentially where I went wrong. Hindsight is 20/20, so why not assess my own performance?

Nothing better to prepare for the next time of supplier coaching, by assessing what went wrong/what went well with the last time I did it! Being able to ensure you don’t repeat the same mistakes is always useful!

Marketing Procurement – Best Practices and Sourcing Strategies for 2021
MS Category Management
October 23, 2020
1 – Don’t treat agencies like any other category. You’re literally buying a team and people, not widgets. Structured scorecards that have to be followed and rigid RFP rules won’t work in marketing procurement.

2 – Brands don’t like to share agencies as they are fearful of getting the “B Team.” So don’t push for all brands to use a single AOR.

3 – To have influence with Marketing or any other business partner you must prove you are trustworthy. The best way to do that is to provide valuable insight by understanding their bu

A Cautionary Tale: How to Ensure You are Never Invited Back Again to Another RFP. EVER.
MS Category Management
October 21, 2020
Just to clear the air, there are a TON of mistakes you can come back from during an RFP / pitch. I’ve seen it all over the past 10 years.

But this, for the first time, was something although the supplier thought was doing themselves a service, backfired spectacularly.

Therefore, I’m hopeful in sharing this cautionary tale, that it will make some people rethink their approaches.

Because even if you are the biggest or the best in the industry, you can still manage to screw up a relationship to the point of no return. And that’s not a good thing.

The Magic of the Halloween Supply Chain
MS Category Management
October 21, 2020
There are certain jobs within the supply chain and procurement industry I’m glad I haven’t jumped into. One, in particular, is the demand planning for the $9B of spend on Halloween products.

Halloween, like any holiday, creates significant seasonal surges for specific product categories. Which makes demand forecasting absolutely ridiculous. But, what does that mean for the end consumer?

Well, when I walked through Target the other day – as always there was an excess of candy available on the shelves. But the costumes, decorations, and everything else were GONE (before the Holiday started too!). So who in Halloween Haunted House is to blame?

New virtual meeting suppliers have flooded the market to meet demand. Make sure you are picking the right ones!

September 09, 2020
You would think finding a virtual meeting provider in this new environment is easy. And it is, to some degree.

You can very easily find providers (maybe too easily). Most of which have pivoted with the rise of virtual meetings/av production to meet the demand.

And that is where the problem lies.

Everybody and I mean everybody who has some type of event management or meeting / virtual meeting support is pivoting to meet this huge increase in demand.

You May Hate Procurement, But Did You Know it Could be Your Ticket to the C-Suite?

So I get it when most people don’t like us. Shoot, I wouldn’t say I like cops either. My heart starts racing whenever I get pulled over (even if I’ve done nothing wrong)!

But the point of procurement is to ensure the business is getting the best bang for their buck. If you try to go around this, you’ve only got to assume it’s not for the best reasons.

Despite all of that, C-Suite Executives look to us to provide value, cost savings, and streamline efficiencies, which puts us in the spotlight for several reasons.

Is There a Way to Avoid the Catch-22 When it Comes to Creating RFPs?
Ms Category Management
July 28, 2020
You need lots of information, and time to properly pick the best supplier for the job.

But you don’t want to overload the supplier with questions if they have a small chance of winning. Not to mention you may not have a lot of time for the RFP, and the overload of questions could drive away potential suppliers (due to a low ROI). It’s a catch-22 situation.

Why Millennials – Like Me – LOVE Procurement!
Ms Category Management
April 24, 2020
These days very few people love what they do for work. Luckily, for me, that’s not necessarily true. In fact, it’s scary how often I say the words ‘I Love Procurement’. It has confused many but intrigued a few people too, like Dana Small.

Dana and I met virtually through a close friend in the industry, then ran into each other at the 2019 SPARK Conference, where we spent two full days geeking out on the future of procurement. Dana asked me what opportunities that I see for the future of procurement and encouraged me to write about it.

Here I want to lay the framework for why millennials like me, dare I say, LOVE procurement. Followed by how I see procurement transforming as the function begins to attract more attention by both organization’s leadership and hot talent in the industry.

Sustainability – What Does it Really Mean?
The increasing effects of polution on the world, has changed consumer, business, and governemental behavior. No longer is it ‘ok’ to have an underwater oil spill causing irreperable damage to an entire ecosystem, or cutting down half the rainforest for profit, or even drive gas guzzling SUV’s that spew out obnoxious amount of air pollution.

Okay, so we all know the story. Some are out hoarding decades worth of toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizers, and cleaning supplies. Some want to cash in, and price gouges others to make a profit. Which may have worked for a while, but eventually amazon and eBay banned them, and now they are stuck with 17k bottles and nowhere to sell them (boo-hoo).

Developing Your Personal Brand Without Promoting Yourself – My Interview in ProcureRising Q1 2020 Magazine
Ms Category Management.com
February 26, 2020
“Almost 20 years later, Dana Gerenda is now Dana Small. Her name has changed, but her belief in hard work and humility remains. She credits her Midwest upbringing for her values. “To me, a ‘Midwest value’ is honest integrity. You don’t need to brag. You need to put your nose to the grindstone and put in a hard day’s work. This is very Midwest. You don’t need to go around telling everyone how great you are,” she explained.

Small believes that your work is the essence of your personal brand. “You don’t need to say, ‘I’m the master of the universe.’ If you are, people will know that you are the master of the universe. Your work will speak for you,” she stated.”

264: Where Did The Money Go? Bridging The Procurement & Finance Gap W/ Dana Small
Aop
August 05, 2019
I’m joined today by Dana Small, Global Category Manager at BioMarin and author of the Ms. Category Management blog. It is rare to find a procurement professional with a background in finance, and rarer still to find a procurement practitioner so willing to share their insight and experiences that they start a blog. In Dana we find both, and that’s a real win for the procurement community.
