Gramener Image Recognition and Intel AI Saving Antarctic Penguins
Intel
October 23, 2019
Counting and identifying characteristics of crowds can provide organizations with a lot of valuable insights. Yet challenges like image distortion, density, and different camera angles can make analyzing images accurately very challenging. Ganes Kesari, Co-founder and Head of Analytics at Gramener, joins the Intel on AI podcast to discuss how Gramener has created a crowd counting solution that can overcome those challenges and produce a very rapid and accurate analysis of images. He talks about how Gramener has utilized this solution for several AI for good projects including a joint effort with Microsoft* to count Antarctic penguin colonies. Ganes explains how their solution used convolutional neural networks (CNNs) using density-based estimations to deliver a more accurate penguin count than traditional manual counting methods. He also emphasized how benchmarking the solution on Intel AI technology and the Intel Optimization for PyTorch* helped Gramener achieve comparable performance at a potentially lower computational cost. In addition to AI for good projects, Ganes also outlines how this same solution can also be utilized for other enterprise opportunities like drug discovery and how Gramener will continue to collaborate with Intel to provide better optimizations and performance for its customers. Session Details:
Today, organizations struggle to get value from data despite significant investments. Did you know that there's one factor that influences the outcomes of all your data initiatives?
This webinar will highlight how an organization's data maturity influences its performance. It will show how you can assess your data maturity and plan the five steps for data-driven business transformation.
Pain points we would be discussing:
Most organizations stagnate midway in their data journey.
Gartner says that over 87% of organizations in the industry are at lower levels of data maturity (levels 1 and 2 on a scale of 5).
Just doing more data science projects will not improve your capabilities or outcomes. The fact is that the top challenges reported by CDOs fall into five common areas.
This webinar will show what they are and how you can tackle them.
Who should attend
- Executives, Chief Data/Analytics Officers, Technology leaders, Business heads, Managers
What Will You Learn?
- What is data science maturity, and why does it matter?
- How do you assess data science maturity and limitations of the assessment?
- How can data science maturity help your organization level up (explained with an example)?

Predicting the Quality of Life from Satellite Imagery
O'Reilly AI Conference
October 17, 2019
In large developing countries like India, it’s tough to base policy decisions on data. Of a population of 1.3 billion, 70% reside in rural areas with minimal digital trails. Large governmental initiatives such as the national census are collected once every 10 years. Despite the best of intentions, they aren’t comprehensive and quickly get out of sync with reality.
Ganes Kesari explores how satellite imagery offers an alternate ground truth that’s accurate at high resolution, available across periods as a time series, easily accessible, and is relatively inexpensive. While this is a rich source of visual information, the challenge has been in processing images and generating useful insights. The advances in deep learning have helped solve this last hurdle, placing enormous power in people’s hands and paving the way for socioeconomic data analytics.
