Five Cold-Chain Logistics Challenges, and How to Solve Them
Supply Chain Brain
May 02, 2022
The distribution of COVID-19 vaccines globally shone a light on cold chain logistics and temperature-controlled transportation, and therefore, the challenges the food industry faces. Vaccines made by Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc. are easily spoiled and must be kept at cold, specific temperatures, or they will be thrown away — just like food products.
With so many elements that affect carrier arrival times and the pressure to avoid hefty fines from retailers, there is an urgent need for data and analytics (D&A) systems to optimize temperature-controlled logistics, detect damaged goods, and sort effective storage layouts. Let’s dive in.

How to pursue data science even if you don’t have big data or AI skills
Substack
December 17, 2021
Have you come across organizations that pour money into data science before getting their data in place? My earlier newsletter talked about a manufacturing organization that attempted just that.
I shared *one* question to help spotlight this disconnect and convince leaders against burning their money. (If you missed the edition, here’s a link)
We walked through a simple yet powerful framework to help you get the most from your data and analytics investments.
When you review the poor ROI of advertising campaigns, if your marketing team has disowned the underlying data, you’ve been in the ‘zone of disbelief.’ When a team painstakingly runs customer surveys, stores all customer interactions but uses them for basic summary reporting, they are in the ‘zone of complacency.’
Most organizations start with a clean slate, on the bottom-left. How do they reach the ‘zone of nirvana’ without slipping into the zones of ‘disbelief’ or ‘complacency’?
Yes, you must steer clear of AI until you get the data in place. But you need NOT shelve all analytics efforts until you build a perfect data warehouse.
You must parallel-track data and analytics (D&A). Focus on incremental gains to level up in your D&A maturity. Here’s a 6-step iterative process to help you get there:

Ask this *one* question to save heartburn (and millions of dollars) in your data science journey

December 03, 2021
“I want my organization to be data-driven,” said the CEO of a medium-sized manufacturing organization. This was the early stages of the pandemic, and we were on our second Zoom meeting.
His organization had begun its digital makeover when COVID hit. With manufacturing plants spread across the country and a customer base that was increasingly digital, the CEO understood the importance of data.
His enthusiasm was evident when he asked me, “How can my team use machine learning to improve business outcomes?”
While executive interest in data was music to my ears, I simultaneously sensed alarm bells going off in my mind.
In my earlier conversations with his team, I found that most of their data were still on paper. Their small digital footprint was handled manually in spreadsheets. But, the business teams had little interest in excel reports or using them for decisions.
The organization lacked quality data and the maturity for simple descriptive insights, whereas the CEO was aspiring a big push into data science.
Such disconnect is widespread in organizations.
How do you resolve this unrealistic expectation to avoid the likely failure and disillusionment with data science?

Are you making these "data-driven blunders"?
Substack
November 18, 2021
Did the last news article you read reconfirm what you had suspected all along? No, this may not be a case of great intuition. You might just be another victim of confirmation bias.
What’s this bias? It’s the selective filtering and interpreting of information to confirm one’s preconceived notions. Simply put, it’s the cherry-picking of information to suit our assumptions conveniently.
This is a deadly bias we all succumb to every day. And, it is one of the most common reasons for bad business decisions.
Steve Ballmer said, “There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.” With a firm belief in the steady rise of personal computers and the proven dominance of Microsoft in this space, any evidence to the contrary must have felt like an inconvenient outlier.
The Microsoft team chose the information they wanted to believe in until it was too late. They lost the opportunity to extend their dominance to the mobile ecosystem.

As parts of the world open up, people are eager to slip back into the old normal. After all, the familiar comforts of the physical world are too tempting.
Take the example of university education. Most institutions have switched back to in-person classes with compulsory residential programs.
“It’s as if the Covid-forced changes were a temporary nuisance that can now be conveniently forgotten,” says Vijay Govindarajan, Coxe Distinguished Professor at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
Today’s big question is whether the pandemic-driven innovations will be sustained and built upon long after masks and booster shots are gone.
Looking back at history, we can find our answers. Govindarajan shares the example of World War II, another black swan event.

Sustainability is not just good for the planet but is an attractive business opportunity.
It’s estimated that the Paris agreement will unlock economic activity worth $13.5 trillion in energy efficiency by 2030. Innovations to realize the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) could open up another $12 trillion worth of business by 2030.
Clearly, there’s money to be made in sustainability.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a strategic enabler and differentiator to build successful businesses in areas such as water, agriculture, climate, energy, or biodiversity.
Let’s look at one of these spaces to find why things badly need some disruption. With examples, we’ll see the transformative potential of AI and how it’s saving the planet.

Why do data analytics projects take so long to break even?
Substack
July 21, 2021
Mark Bancroft hurried into the elevator. His quarterly review with the CEO was scheduled in 15 minutes. As the elevator doors closed, he thumbed through the slides he had printed out.
This was Bancroft’s sixth quarter as CIO at the manufacturing firm headquartered in Chicago. The past quarter was an eventful one wherein the company’s first data science project had gone live.
Over four months, they built an algorithm to predict machine failures. The solution was rolled out with great fanfare and company-wide roadshows.
It had been eight weeks since the predictive solution went live, and the business teams loved it. To the facility managers’ surprise, the algorithm flagged several big-ticket machine failures, weeks in advance.
Fully aware that this advanced analytics initiative would be the topmost item on the CEO’s agenda, Bancroft had compiled solution adoption metrics, model accuracy stats, and user anecdotes in his deck.
Armed with this information, he confidently walked into the CEO’s office that afternoon.
To Bancroft’s surprise, the discussion on the predictive project lasted hardly five minutes. While the CEO acknowledged the progress, he had just one question which Bancroft didn’t have a clear answer for:
“How long will the predictive analytics project take to break even?”
A fairly straightforward question, you might say. Wouldn’t any executive be interested in this?
But why do Bancroft or most other data leaders struggle to answer it?

Will AI destroy more jobs than it creates?
Substack
July 09, 2021
We have seen three industrial revolutions so far. Every single one of them created more jobs than those they automated away.
When horses were replaced by cars, it created the automobile industry that continues to employ millions worldwide. However, experts doubt whether this will continue with AI-driven automation in the fourth industrial revolution that’s underway.
I recently spoke to Kevin Roose, NYT tech columnist and author of the book “Futureproof. Pointing to the exponential advances in AI, he says, “As machines learn to be better on their own, humans will eventually become a drag on the efficiency of the system.”
We already have organizations such as Ant Financial that are built around an entirely digital core. AI runs the show, and there are no workers in the “critical path” of operating activities. There is no manager approving loans, no employee providing financial advice, no representative authorizing consumer medical expenses.
You might argue that humans are needed to perform critical tasks even in such a hyper-automated business. Yes, Ant Financial still needs humans to design workflows, oversee decisions, or step in during exigencies. But, this is just a fraction of the workforce they would have otherwise employed.
Compared to JPMorgan Chase, the financial organization that employs a global headcount of 250,000, Ant Financial staffs less than 10% of this workforce. However, Ant Financial was valued at around $220 Billion at the end of 2020 - almost half that of JPMorgan.
This comparison misses one important point, though.

What's the secret to finding hidden insights from your data?
Substack
June 23, 2021
“Can you find unusual insights from this data?” asked the technology head of a global pharma company. It was a hot summer day, and this was our first meeting. We sat in his office looking at a spreadsheet on his laptop.
This executive’s team managed the performance of strategic software vendors for the pharma company. Each of these vendors had contracts worth millions of dollars. The team ran internal surveys to get business’ feedback for all vendors.
This was the survey data the executive was showing us. At a few hundred rows, it was a fraction of the massive data warehouse his team routinely used.
The team had been creating descriptive summaries of the survey feedback for their quarterly vendor reviews. However, the dashboards weren’t very actionable. With the next review coming up in 2 weeks, the executive wanted to try something different.
Pointing to the spreadsheet, he said, “If you could do some magic with this data and discover unusual, actionable nuggets, we’ll work with your company.”
Those were the early days of Gramener. Data storytelling and analytics weren’t as popular nine years ago. Traditional BI tools from larger companies such as IBM were good at providing access to data, not to insights.
In a bid to win the client, we took up this challenge.

Visualizing Machine Learning: How Do We Humanize The Intelligence?
Martechseries
May 28, 2018
Summary: While the data science and AI disciplines go through exciting and exhilarating advances, it is important to keep the user’s expectations and experiences in perspective. This is very critical since a sizeable segment of target AI users are being alienated with deepening disconnect and distrust.
It doesn’t need a big dash of imagination to bridge this gap. Many of the enablers needed to build user trust and promote understanding are already available in our toolkit, and research in the field is quickly unraveling the rest.
What’s needed is an acknowledgment of this divide and a conscious effort to address it by adapting the above visual framework along with the constituent 4 key aspects, while implementing machine learning solutions

6 Reasons why Data Visualisation projects Fail
TDS
May 03, 2018
At times, one wonders what makes the visual display of information so tough.
Perhaps it’s got to do with the reduction of information design to lame, but slick dashboards displaying an assortment of KPIs.
Maybe it's the fancy charts and dazzling functionalities that have somewhere lost the pulse of the users.
Or, it’s the well-meaning initiatives that have gotten derailed midway due to conflicting priorities & confused execution.
Can we look at the key failure points in visualisation projects? Or, as a visualisation practitioner would you like some funny reflections of shared frustrations? Read on for a sampling of our experience at Gramener, from close to a decade of implementing visual intelligence at enterprises. Lets also discuss how these pitfalls can be tackled.

5 Steps to Transform into a Data-Driven Organization

May 29, 2021
This session was presented on May 27th, 2021, in a Webinar organized by Gramener.
https://info.gramener.com/5-steps-to-transform-into-data-driven-organization
Session Details:
Today, organizations struggle to get value from data despite significant investments. Did you know that there's one factor that influences the outcomes of all your data initiatives?
This webinar will highlight how an organization's data maturity influences its performance. It will show how you can assess your data maturity and plan the five steps for data-driven business transformation.
Pain points we would be discussing:
Most organizations stagnate midway in their data journey.
Gartner says that over 87% of organizations in the industry are at lower levels of data maturity (levels 1 and 2 on a scale of 5).
Just doing more data science projects will not improve your capabilities or outcomes. The fact is that the top challenges reported by CDOs fall into five common areas.
This webinar will show what they are and how you can tackle them.
Who should attend
- Executives, Chief Data/Analytics Officers, Technology leaders, Business heads, Managers
What Will You Learn?
- What is data science maturity, and why does it matter?
- How do you assess data science maturity and limitations of the assessment?
- How can data science maturity help your organization level up (explained with an example)?
