John McCabe

Founder & CEO Sustainable Six Sigma | Architect of the Dual-ROI™ Methodology for Sustainable Enterprise Performance | Creator of the Judgment Stack™ — a proprietary executive decision system at Sustainable Six Sigma

Philadelphia, United States

I work with CEOs, COOs, and CHROs to redesign enterprise performance systems that deliver measurable financial results and sustainable human capital outcomes.

I am the founder of Sustainable Six Sigma, a performance transformation firm focused on evolving Lean and Six Sigma for modern, complex organizations operating under constant change.

Traditional efficiency-first models optimize processes, but often degrade leadership judgment, workforce capability, and long-term value creation. That gap is where transformation efforts fail.

I am the architect of the Dual-ROI™ methodology, a proprietary framework that integrates operational excellence, leadership effectiveness, workforce capability, and AI-enabled decision support into a single performance system.

Dual-ROI enables organizations to scale performance without sacrificing culture, trust, or decision quality—producing results leaders can defend and organizations can sustain.

My experience spans domestic and international environments across regulated, asset-intensive, and service-driven industries, supporting enterprise-scale transformation and operating model redesign.

My current research and writing focus on:
• Sustainable operations performance
• The evolution of Lean and Six Sigma in enterprise systems
• Human capital as a balance-sheet multiplier
• AI as a judgment-augmentation tool, not labor replacement
• Leadership effectiveness in complex operating environments

My work is dedicated to advancing a more rigorous and durable standard for enterprise performance—one that integrates financial discipline, human systems, and leadership judgment into a coherent operating model.

How Leadership Blind Spots Form — And How to Reduce Them
LinkedIn
January 11, 2026
Leadership blind spots are rarely a capability problem, they are a design problem that emerges as leaders operate farther from day to day work and reality gets filtered on the way up. The paper explains how past success hardens assumptions, how metrics, reporting, and incentives reinforce a polished version of truth, and why listening alone produces anecdotes rather than systemic clarity. It closes with an execution focused prescription, redesign feedback loops so insight is captured consistently and treated as data, enabling earlier risk detection, clearer tradeoffs, and decisions grounded in how work actually happens.

AI and Operational Excellence - Why Sustainability Fails Without Execution
LinkedIn
January 06, 2026
This is a short thought leadership newsletter on the real execution problem behind AI and sustainability. The core message is simple: AI does not repair broken operations, it magnifies them.

If processes are unstable, automation scales waste, rework, defects, and hidden sustainability risk just as efficiently as it scales output. The article reframes sustainability as an operations discipline, not a reporting exercise, and argues that the organizations seeing real progress are the ones embedding sustainability into day to day operational KPIs like quality, flow, throughput, and cost control, with Lean Six Sigma stability as the foundation for dependable AI value.

Lean Six Sigma as Modern Thought Leadership: Why Execution Discipline Now Determines Enterprise Credibility
John McCabe
January 28, 2026
Lean Six Sigma is no longer competing for relevance. It is reclaiming authority.

In global enterprises shaped by accelerated technology adoption, compressed decision cycles, regulatory pressure, and systemic volatility, performance failure rarely originates in strategy formulation. It originates inside execution systems that cannot carry leadership intent without distortion. Ambition remains intact. Capital is deployed. Communication improves. Yet results fragment as decisions travel downstream through unstable operating structures.

What separates resilient organizations from fragile ones is not vision, tooling, or narrative clarity, but whether their operating systems can sustain judgment under pressure, repeatedly, across time.

Thought Leadership as an Operational Control System-The Executive Signal Integrity Model for decisions, risk, and execution coherence
Thinkers360
January 26, 2026
Thought leadership is not a market-facing communications asset. In complex enterprises, it is an internal control system that determines how reality is framed, how risk is interpreted, and how decentralized judgment stays coherent when leaders are not present. When thought leadership is absent or inconsistent, execution rarely collapses immediately. It drifts through local optimization, permission seeking, rising decision latency, and uneven risk posture across functions.

This paper reframes thought leadership as executive-owned decision infrastructure, then provides a practical diagnostic to measure signal integrity through observable operational indicators, so leaders can correct drift before it becomes visible in outcomes.

From Cost Reduction to Value Creation - From Cost Reduction to Value Creation
LinkedIn
January 03, 2026
Six Sigma has never been merely a collection of tools. At its core, it is a discipline for designing systems that behave predictably under real conditions. When applied well, it reduces unwanted variation, stabilizes performance, and creates the foundation for scale. When misapplied, it does something else entirely. It optimizes parts of the organization while quietly weakening the whole.

Efficiency optimizes systems for yesterday. Value designs them for what comes next.

1 Trend
Execution Grade Design Thinking

Date : January 29, 2026

Execution Grade Design Thinking is what happens when design thinking does not end at insight. It carries the method through the decisions that must be made, the tradeoffs that must be owned, and the handoffs that must hold, until the work is actually performed the same way twice. It treats the decision journey as the product.

Most organizations do not struggle because they lack ideas. They struggle because good ideas are converted into vague commitments, then diluted by cross functional friction, priority churn, and unclear decision rights. The workshop creates energy, but the operating system of the enterprise decides what survives. This is why the next evolution of design thinking is not more ideation, it is better execution design.

In practice, the failure pattern is consistent. You can interview customers, prototype concepts, and produce a crisp narrative, then watch the solution drift during implementation because nobody designed the path from intent to action. The moment adoption depends on informal alignment and heroic follow up, the system will revert. Execution Grade Design Thinking closes that gap by designing for work as done, then instrumenting the system so leaders can see drift early and correct it before it becomes a postmortem.

The method, applied the way operators need it

Empathy is not a workshop step. It is field observation of how people actually decide and execute under constraints, including the unofficial workarounds they rely on to survive the day. The goal is not to document pain points, it is to surface the friction that will reappear after launch if you do not design around it.

Decision journey mapping makes this visible. Who decides, what inputs they trust, what gets escalated, what gets ignored, and where handoffs turn into delays. Once you map that journey, you can prototype the smallest viable operating path, the decision ritual, the artifact, the handoff, and the criteria that make action repeatable.

Adoption is designed, not announced. Training, enablement, and reinforcement are part of the solution architecture, because anything left to an email campaign will be out competed by local priorities.

Finally, the learning loop becomes non negotiable. If you do not measure the decision journey, you cannot improve it. You are left with opinions, not control.

Signals that separate theatre from transformation

If you want to know whether your design thinking work is landing, instrument a few signals that cannot be argued away.

Decision cycle time, from the moment a real question is raised to the moment action is committed.
Rework rate, how often decisions are reopened, reversed, or quietly bypassed.
Adoption latency, the time between a decision and consistent behavior in the field.
Exception load, how much work flows around the intended process.
Outcome variance, the spread between the expected result and what reality delivers.

These are not vanity metrics. They are early warning indicators that your decision journey is breaking.

Where it shows up first

Execution Grade Design Thinking lands fastest in environments where failure is expensive.

Healthcare and regulated contexts, where the decision journey must be safe and auditable.
Product and platform organizations, where prioritization churn destroys roadmap value.
Manufacturing and supply chain networks, where constraint decisions ripple across cost and quality.
Enterprise transformations, where the old habits quietly defeat the new operating model.

What I expect to happen next

Design thinking will broaden from empathy for users to empathy for operators and decision makers, because adoption is the real constraint.
Procurement and audit leaders will begin asking for evidence of adoption design and decision traceability, not only deliverables.
AI driven analytics will force clearer decision criteria, because faster signals expose slower governance.

What to do Monday morning

Pick one outcome that matters, then map the decision journey that produces it, including the unofficial path people use when the formal process fails.
Choose three signals, cycle time, rework, and adoption latency, and review them weekly for one month.
Prototype the decision artifact, one page with owner, criteria, constraints, and verification method.
Pilot with one team, refine based on observed behavior, then scale only what survives real conditions.
Install a monthly learning loop where decision outcomes update criteria, handoffs, and training.

Who should care

Leaders who are tired of performative alignment and want execution reliability that does not depend on heroics, especially transformation executives, operational excellence leaders, product leaders, and procurement decision makers.

Provocation

If your design thinking outputs are strong, why does adoption fade after launch, and what does that reveal about the decision journey you did not design
